I bought a used version that was supposed to be "LIKE NEW". It is. It's a nice coffee table book. I am fascinated by Jean Guichard's photos of La Jument Lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper during a storm. I was looking for a poster of it. There are a number of the storm at La Jument in the book as well as many other lighthouses--inside and out. It's an interesting book about a topic (living in and caring for a lighthouse) we would rarely, if ever, think of. Jean Guichard is an amazing photographer and his subjects, lighthouses, water, and lighthouse keepers, are equally amazing. Worth far more than the small amount I paid for this great book.

When one thinks of the great "rock lighthouses" they typically think of the ones of the coast of the UK. However the coast of France is just as treacherous and has just as many light's protecting the shipping routes. This is the only book I know of that specifically focuses on the great lights of France. The book has sections on lighthouses in general and, of course, a section that catalogs the different lighthouses. The photos and writing are both excellent!

Could not even imagine today's modern person working in these conditions for that pay. The pictures are great. I wish was born a few decades sooner. Great writing, details to all aspects of the job. It's goes up with the rest of my mant Lighthouse books. And will be reread again.

We love lighthouses and found the book to have a simple style and yet was infomative. We were disappointed that there were not more full page pictures of the dramatic scenes that Jean Guichard is known for.

Admittedly don't have a deep background with books about lighthouse architecture, experiences, or lifestyle - my sense and understanding comes from this singular experience. Hardcore fans take note and hopefully cut this newbie a break.That said - love this book!Years ago I saw a truly astounding image - an indescribably huge ocean wave crashing into a lighthouse. Incredibly, you could juuust make out a man who had a door open on the lee side, appearing to have no idea that he was about to be crushed and drowned by millions of pounds of frigid sea water. Honestly, it was and still is, one of the most amazing images of mother nature I've ever seen.So I spent some time trying to locate that specific image for a poster when I learned about this production.Don't know what to say. But I will add:Beautiful, amazing, incredible, terrifying, introspective, stunning, explosive, somber, wonderful, and profound.The list of superlatives is endless.Just a fantastic book filled with images that have to be seen to be believed.Interestingly, I found the stories of deep isolation, the madness, and even murder, really balanced out the photography. Clearly, this isn't all romance and pretty pictures. 'Monuments & Keepers' delved honestly into some of the negative aspects of this lifestyle. I really appreciated that.And it is a lifestyle. These lighthouse folks, for a variety of reasons, intentionally choose the lonely path of existence. Very much in the vein of reality-tv shows about Alaska; currently the du jour of cable programming.The visuals alone make this worth the purchase price - just amazing stuff. But the written content really pulls this work together and delivers an enjoyable education.

It was to be expected that I absolutely love this book; I have been an avid fan of Scott Gustafson's work for years now. I could go on and on about the lovely selection of stories, interesting characters, beautiful environments and luscious colors... and all that would be reason enough to buy this book. But the truly exciting feature of Scott's work comes from all these wonderful qualities combined: the suspension of disbelief. As fantastical as all these tales are, for the duration of the bedtime story, they become real. Tangible, almost. I've had some delicious cake with mice, lost a green umbrella to a tiger, and suddenly found myself far closer to a giant ogre than any person in his right mind would dare to tread... Another brilliant book!

Beautifully made, heirloom quality book. The pictures are bright and detailed and has many layers for enjoyment by young and old alike. The stories are familiar and eloquently portrayed. I bought this for my grandson's 1st birthday so maybe one day it will be handed down to his grandchildren.

The stories in this book are well written and don’t just cover the basics like many children’s books. But the reason I’m giving the book a full five stars is because of the enchantingly gorgeous artwork presented on almost every page. The kids love that they get a long detailed bedtime story with artwork that really transports them into the story. I love only having to read one story a night instead of six short ones!

Gustafson is the premier painter of wonderful, evocative, realistic illustrations of children's stories. Adults will enjoy looking at the pictures every bit as much as children do. And the retelling of each story is better than adequate. A gorgeous gift for families with young children - or for people who simply love the best of illustrative art.

Do not buy if you use the app! If you use the app, Not only was the front small, the words are scrunched/overlapping making it impossible to read, even when you use the double tap to enlarge feature. I haven’t tried to read this on the kindle cloud reader yet, so I am not sure how that interface fares/looks. But the text is fine on my kindle, hence the three stars, it doesn’t work across all the kindle types. I used my kindle fire, so I am uncertain how the other kindle devices handle this book and its features.

I can (and often do) just sit and pore over Scott Gustafson's artwork. The stories may be bedtime stories, but the beautiful illustrations will keep you up really late.

Beautiful book with amazing illustrations! I wish All books were so beautiful. I believe that kids need more books like that.

After a quarter century, Robert Kaplan’s “Balkan Ghosts” holds up very well. Kaplan offers fascinating insights, reflections on history and some personal moments as he looks at countries in the Balkans after the fall of the Soviet Union and before the wars that devastated the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. To his credit, Kaplan shows the rising tensions and, in some editions, a few essays on the Balkan Wars are included. One can see why Bill Clinton had this book on his reading list in the White House.There were several other books on Kaplan’s mind as he wrote this book including Dame Rebecca West’s masterful “Black Lamb, Grey Falcon.” Kaplan falls short of writing the magnum opus that West did but this book is a worthy sequel. The writing is vivid and memorable. Kaplan is very skilled at boiling down often obscure but important history into a few paragraphs which helps readers who aren’t familiar with the region. It’s a fascinating book and an important one. Highly recommended.

David Kaplan's third book is a record of his travel in the Balkans in the 80s and early 90s. His analysis of ethnic tension and acrimony in the historical memory of various countries is remarkable. This work is also a guide to the modern history of Europe's powder keg. The chapters on Romania and Yugoslavia are better than those on Bulgaria. The part on Greece is a bit too sentimental and narrow in time scope. In general a good piece of writing to understand the history and social landscape of the area. Unfortunately this well-written work affected President Clinton's decision not to intervene in Bosnia.

I drove through Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia this summer to help a friend with some research on his book. I loved the countries and the people, but came away shaking my head. Just under the surface there is still a simmering ethnic hatred and I decided I needed to know more. The author being an American is able to take himself away from the hostility that plagued the area for ages. While there I spoke to older people about the bitterness in the area, I was always told its always the fault of other ethnic or religious groups. When I spoke to younger people that had left their homeland, went to college and returned. I am always told "I am Croatian and I am Catholic so this is my opinion," Or "I am a Serb, and I am Orthodox so this is my opinion." I definitely wanted more of a historical insight. This book was a good starting point. I purchased some other books but can clearly see the authors prejudices. The book is a quick read and covers a wide area. I may purchase a few more copies to give to friends.

Amazing and fantastically relevant book. Kaplan foresaw the Balkan wars of the 1990's when no one else did. It became popular when someone photographed Pres. Bill Clinton getting on his helicopter, and it turned out he had this book in his hand.What you get, through Kaplan's methodology of visiting EACH Balkan country, is a real sense for how deeply conflicted up the whole region is, for how conflict permeates the culture and the outlook of each of the Balkan peoples. I didn't emerge hopeless, but certainly sobered.Happily, you get this somewhat dismal view in a really entertaining book full of interesting and amusing stories of real people.A great read on a highly relevant topic.

The style was entertaining and interesting. The many references to Black Lamb and Grey Falcon by Rebecca West are calling me next. Feel this book gave a good overview of the Balkan's and some of it's history. Mission accomplished! Definitely learning about the many nuances to this region of the world which seems to take a back seat during major events in history. Balkan Ghosts wet my appetite for more!

At the beginning, felt as though I had made a bad book choice. Delving further into it , found "Robby's" style of writing to be captivating and informative. My understanding of the Balkans was weak at best and though far from being an expert, I at least have some fundamental basics. Kaplan's mingling with normal everyday people through his travels brings the reality of the strife endured by wars and oppression that has riddled this area for centuries. Only would wish for another couple of chapters taking the reader into the wars that broke out in the early 90's that brought about the current independent group of countries that comprise the Balkan peninsula.

I have read Robert Kaplan for years, mostly in The Atlantic, where I tended read him knowing I would disagree with him. His school of political analysis is of the Darwinian 'dog eat dog' slash Hobbes' life is 'solitary, poor, brutish and short' school, and the US should be a tougher dog. This book is certainly in character, but I have to say I found it a good read. Being nearly completely ignorant about the Balkans when I picked it up, I learned a lot of the basic infrastructure of power and conflict in the region (how accurate it is beyond basic historical facts, I have to wonder, given the other detailed Amazon reviews. Thank you, BTW!). What's important about it for Americans, along with Jerusalem: A Biography, and other detailed regional studies, is just how amazingly little Americans know about centuries of history and how that impinges on the present. (Heck, we don't even have a good grip on the implications of our own civil war.) Then we wade (or swagger or waddle) into the midst of complicated regional conflicts without an f____ing clue. So, the thing about Balkan Ghosts is that it makes you stop and think and question and realize there is a lot more you need to learn. And thanks to Amazon reviewers, what would have been a 3 star book for me, becomes a four star or even five because of the interesting comments.

I feel like it was just enough to get me excited and interested in learning more about stocks and investments but one thing I want to note (just because I’m picky about this in books) is that this book actually had quite a few basic grammatical errors. Personally, that just makes me more hestiant on following an author’s advice when it seems they didn’t have enough funds to have a quality company review/publish the book. So, this book was good and I’m sure I’ll refer to it when I forget certain terms but I personally won’t buy any other of this author’s books.

This is a fantastic book for someone looking to start investing. It does a great job of not just explaining how everything works, but teaching the reader how to go about trading. One point that I really like about this book is that it is not a sales pitch. A lot of investment books today have an underlying sales pitch to purchase an authors program.

I enjoyed reading this book and I will keep it in my library as a reference. I have read a few investor books over the years and this is the second one that I can truly say I could follow without confusion. Reviewing is difficult because we all know graphics and/or programming at different levels. I am experienced in both computer graphics and MFC/C++.The full examples, and description of the framework, are listed in the text. That's good. The CD-ROM is very good and gives all examples.However, I'm working on a DirectX8 program, and the samples won't compile under DirectX8 (MS says code is supposed to be backward compatible). In addition, the examples keep looking for a joystick. I don't have, need or want a joystick. Aparently if you don't have a joystick, it's an error. :-)

Look at any book to date on direct x and it will usually cover everything but 3d or 3d immediate mode. This book spends an inordinate amount of time covering how to set up a direct x program, reading the keyboard, mouse, networking, etc. In short, with all the attention given to topics well covered in every other direct x book, very little room is left for anything more than a cursory look at 3d. How about a book for those of us who read inside direct x and are ready for the sequal? If I click the mouse on the screen, how do I know what object was under it? How do I set up a hierarcicle animation system? How do I path AIs through a 3d world? How about vertex blending, bones systems, or inverse kinetics? I basicaly want to know how is direct 3d going to help me in these real world demands, and how do I structure my system to best take advantage of the features direct 3d supplies, and how do I get around those features it does not without giving up such advantages as video card T&L? If I let direct 3d handle my transformations then how do I determine hit tests? I know that these may seem like advanced concepts that should be delt with in books dedicated to that subject, but how these various systems relate to direct 3d, and how to get the most information from the automated features of direct 3d should be delt in a book on direct 3d. I want the information that will allow me to use the knowledge gained from those advanced books in a direct 3d environment. Most game engines I've seen have handled all the transformation and lighting in code so this information is available for these reasons. Can this be done a different way?One final note. I've worked in the game industry for several years now and nobody writes in c any more. Systems are just too complicated, and there are too many of us on a project. The notion that c++ is too slow is nonsense and I wish the authors would prepare the readers for the realities they will encounter. The great advantage that C++ has is that it compartmentalizes the concepts so it is easier to use and understand. Kind of like what a book is supposed to do, isn't it?

First of all, let me say up front that this book is *far* better than the author's previous Direct3D work, entitled "The Awesome Power of DirectX/Direct3D". Anyone interested in why I would mention this should look at the customer reviews for that title. I just want to make sure no one who gave up on the earlier book is scared off from this one just because the author is the same. Whether the improvement is due to Kovach's having more time to complete this one or because of better editing from the Microsoft press folks I don't know, but suffice it to say that this one stands far above the earlier work.What also makes this book a definite improvement is the fact that it's the first one in the market to deal with Direct3D Immediate Mode. The coverage of Immediate Mode is fairly detailed, although sometimes the author doesn't explain his code snippets in enough depth, leaving the reader to try and figure out what's going on. It's not done to an unforgivable extent, but it can be annoying at times.If you're new to Windows programming in general, or unfamiliar with 3D concepts and basic linear algebra, you'll also need a companion book to really understand some of the discussions, because the goal of this work is to demonstrate how to use Direct3D's API to create interesting programs. It's not that the author ignores beginning users, but his goal is to focus on what Direct3D (and friends) can do for your programs, and 450 pages only gives you so much room to work with.His coverage of Direct3D topics is pretty comprehensive, with texturing, stenciling, T&L issues and others all getting a fair shake. He also includes some interesting software which will allow users to load Quake2 and 3D studio models into your programs. Code for doing so is included on the companion CD.In short, this is a good book for anyone even remotely familiar with Windows programming, DirectX and 3D theory and concepts. When you consider the other Direct3D books on the market, this one looks even better.

First off, yes, you can get all of the information presented here in the DirectX SDK docs. By that argument, you can get whatever information you want from the MSDN Library, so why buy any books at all? The reason is that this book gives a better explanation than the SDK docs, and comes with a sample program that actually works. It goes over enough of the api, and gives you a framework that you can actually go through and build a working program with. I do agree with a couple of the other reviews and question the inclusion of DirectPlay and DirectInput. But because they are there doesn't justify giving this book a lower rating. If you can't get the programs to compile then you need to spend some time learning a little more about your compiler. I bought this book so that I could make a D3D port of my openGL code and was able to easily make the transition thanks to this text.

Oh Yay! While unfortunately this book came out a couple months AFTER I adopted my 1st duck and his companion, it is absolutely PERFECT for someone thinking about bringing ducks into their lives. It has just the right amount of information on care, housing, etc. I'd purchased a few other Duck Books before this one and they were just absolute overkill on breed history and breeding, duck history etc. I love this book and it sits proudly next to my Fresh Eggs Daily book that I purchased before I brought home my first run of baby chicks. For anyone considering getting into flock keeping... Duck Eggs Daily and Fresh Eggs Daily are invaluable resources!

This book has lots of personal experience and great color photos to help with descriptions. All the info is organized and easy to find for quick reference. There is a good balance of giving all the info needed with out making it to drawn out and therefor boring. I read the entire book and didn't skip over topics I don't necessarily need to know. This book is the best thing second to sitting down and talking to a duck expert...which I have done.

Pro's:- Covers a broad range of topics for beginners- gives the reader an idea of what owning ducks is like/what to expect- excellent resource pages at the back for further learning- explores different bedding options, diet selection, number of birds (and sex) for a beginners flock, etc.-Quick and easy readCon's- while many important topics are covered (everything from ducklings, housing, feeding, behavior, to minor injuries) each topic isn't covered in extensive detail. This left me wondering about specifics or alternative options on certain topics.- there is a first aid section, but it's minimal and the author only focuses on natural methods. While I'm a fan of this, sometimes it's not enough. There are no alternatives given.Overall, It's a great beginners book. She covers a lot and sets realistic expectations. I think it's useful for a duck reference home library, however, I plan to have additional resources

She got me in the intro where she is told at the feed store raising ducks is just like raising chickens. Lol so not and now all the rest of the world told that same little white lie can turn to Lisa's amazing book. I've spent hours online researching over the past 2 years and everything it took me years to learn is in this lovely little book!

My ducklings are only two weeks old but my kids and I have already had hours and hours of enjoyment watching them. This book has been a lifesaver for a first-time ducky Mom. The ducks love the clumps of grass in the brooder and the fresh herbs in their water. They were so cute diving under the water on their first short trip swimming in their plastic tub. There is so much in this book that my local supply store didn’t know. Things that are vital for the ducklings’ health and wellness. I will refer back to this book over and over.The day after we brought them home I started thinking ‘WHAT did I do? Should I find them a better home? I can’t do this.’ I read this book over two days and came out filled with confidence and ready for the work and excitement ahead. Definitely recommend to every new and experienced family with backyard ducks!

I've read a lot of duck books. I didn't want to bring ducks onto our homestead without being very prepared, so I checked out every duck book from the library. I also checked out every book on keeping poultry and small farm animals. The sections on ducks were aways very small and outdated. And even the books dedicated to ducks focused mostly on raising them for meat rather than eggs. This book has it all, thankfully! The photos are fantastic, as well. My husband read it cover-to-cover before I even had a chance to; and the ducks are totally my hobby rather than his!Our six Golden300 ducklings are thriving, and this book has made me much more confident over the last 6 weeks of taking care of them!

What a cool book! It gave ideas on housing and fencing, feeding etc but I really enjoyed the chapters about the day in the life of a duck.Even if you have a few duck books, are thinking of getting some ducks or already have them, this is a cool book to have.

I saw this book in the airport in Varanasi. Already over-packed, I decided to wait until I got home to buy it. Having just returned from two weeks in northern India, I had written my first impressions to a few friends, and thought I had captured the essence pretty well. Then I read Holy Cow, and found the voice I wished I had. Sarah MacDonald gives the best description I could ever imagine for what I had just experienced. Her words are a perfect representation of the chaos and the beauty I now know so well. But just as my two weeks merely scratched the surface of this country, so her outward impressions did the same, although far more eloquently and humorously than mine. But then she did what I, of course, could not do in a mere two weeks. She went inside. Not only inside the country, the people, the culture, and of course, the religions, but most of all, inside herself, for an explosive, yet tranquil expansion of her senses and her consciousness. Through Sarah's eyes, inner and outer, I got a glimpse of what I missed by being a mere tourist. I am grateful to her for writing this spectacular odyssey, an exciting adventure on every human level imaginable. For anyone who has been to India, you will "get it" and I think you will love it. If you haven't been, but want a preview of what awaits you, although it's impossible to put into words what you will encounter, nothing I have read, or written, comes closer than Holy Cow. Buy this book.

The author describes India as profound and profane. That pretty much sums up her book as well. Maybe Disney Land with the whiff and splat of raw sewerage would be another summation of her india. She thoroughly investigates every single "ism" and geographic location on the sub continent. Calcutta is about the only place she doesn't visit. The book is thoroughly educational from a cultural, religious, and geographic stand point. In reading up on India for a coming visit she is one of the best and most thorough detectives I have found. I am glad to have read the book; I have no regrets. It did drive my crazy with superficial left wing girly slams of war and the West. Those who derive their comfort and wealth from the western economies are usually the greatest critics of western culture and the most beholden to the mysterious charms of the east. Sarah has a lively writing style. She lulls you into comfort and then pulls the literary rug out from under your feet. She is very skilled at that. As a reader it was an enjoyable device.

Great read if you have ever been to India, and a good prep if you're planning to go. The author has a very breezy writing style (that sometimes goes over the top in alliteration) and great wit. Starting out from a position of hating her first experience of India, she goes to live there to be with her fiance and falls in love with the country without being blind to it's many problems and the hardship and hassles of daily life.

I picked up Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure after it was recommended to me by a fellow India traveler during my most recent trip to the country. I thought it was a great read: witty, lighthearted, and at times touching. Having traveled to many of the same places, and even attending some of the same spiritual retreats, I thought it gave a very honest look at India and spirituality. So when I logged on to Amazon after finishing it, I was really surprised to see so many negative reviews. But after skimming all the one stars, I realized that they were mostly written by Indians who felt the book insulted their country. Given that I'm not Indian and have never lived in India, I can only say that they are certainly entitled to their opinions. But I will note that many of the Indian reviewers said that they picked up the book to get a perspective on how western travelers view their country, and in that regard I think they got what they asked for. I recently spent several weeks in India, as have many of my friends, and I think the author provides an accurate description of the culture shock many of us feel when we arrive. Delhi is overcrowded, there is extreme poverty, the pollution is worse than anywhere else I've traveled, and there continues to be significant sexism. While there did seem to be some embellishment for the sake of the storyline (or maybe it seemed that way to me because her adventure began 10-15 years before mine), overall I could really relate to the author's experience. Moreover, critics should note that the author grows to love the country and all its eclectic religious practices, ultimately sobbing as she finally leaves for good. I would encourage readers to keep an open mind and try not to take it too seriously. This is just one women's perspective on her time in India, and like it or not many other western reviewers have indicated that they can relate to it.

I loved it! Unfortunately, I only heard of it after my travels in India. I appreciated her extreme candidness and didn't interpret it as contempt or as a failed attempt to somehow portray all of India (as reviewer Erik criticizes). Nor did I particularly like the author as a friend or kindred spirit, i didn't need to, but more that I appreciated her detailing experiences and accepted her lens as a reluctant longterm resident, socially isolated, with an often-absent partner. This is not the context of most of us travelers/tourists! I felt she was treading water in a strange ocean, that offered moments of blissful back floating in between scary undertows and harsh, unpredictable stormy weather. And who can visit India without some type of spiritual questing? No one, I think.
