About the Author

Kiini Ibura Salaam's fiction has been included in such publications as Dark Matter, Mojo: Conjure Stories, and Dark Eros. One of her earlier (and most distinctive) stories, ''Of Wings, Nectar, and Ancestors,'' was translated into Polish, and two of her short stories, ''Desire'' and ''Rosamojo,'' were praised in Publishers Weekly. Her essays have appeared in Essence, Ms., and Colonize This! Her article ''Navigating to No'' sparked a spate of radio interviews, a television appearance, and a college seminar, as well as earned a personal commentary award from the National Association of Black Journalists. Her essay No, which appeared in both Ms. Magazine and Utne Reader, was included in the Longman Publishers composition guide, Reading Into Writing. Though she was born and raised in New Orleans, Salaam lives with her daughter in Brooklyn.

NOTES ON DIVERSITY:This is another case where diversity is not really the right word to use here.1 This is a book of stories where, with one or two exceptions, the focus is on Black womanhood. Sometimes those Black women are in space. Sometimes they coexist alongside gods. Sometimes they live in New York and are beset by nostalgia for Louisiana. Sometimes they are aliens who communicate through dance. But unifying the collection of stories is a deep exploration of Black womanhood. It is a book written within a lived experience for others of that lived experience. It reminds me, in that sense, of Constance Burris’ BLACK BEAUTY.2All philosophizing aside, this book is full of characters of color. And women. And it has some queer representation.REVIEW:Salaam is a lovely, poetic writer. From her language choice to the actual structure of the stories themselves, most of the stories in this collection are lyrical and haunting.One of the clearest themes throughout all the stories is sex, which in virtually all cases3 is a powerfully positive and healing force in women’s lives. In stories like “Desire” and the trio of stories featuring the unnamed alien race represented by WaLiLa and MalKai who feast on human nectar (that is drawn out by way of sex), sex and sexuality is arguably coerced--but still, the power of it and the emotional connection it brings proves healing. Or at the very least complicated. The women in the stories remain agentic throughout even when used as vessels.But I was more drawn to some of the other themes woven through the stories.4 Movement-as-freedom and movement-as-communication comes up again and again. Most clearly in the WaLiLa and MalKai stories, where WaLiLa and MalKai must learn to forsake their original language of movement/dance for spoken human languages, and again in “Battle Royale.” In “Battle Royale”, the narrator’s insistence on engaging in the flashing game/dance of razors leads to the fever-dream punishment meted out by his grandfather. But movement, or the lack of it, and how it can bring a different kind of freedom comes up in “Debris”, too.There is an openness in Salaam’s resolutions that I enjoyed. Many of the stories were about a change of direction, a decision point, and were other writers would tell you where the characters were going, Salaam refuses to reveal what happens next. The conflict was that there was a decision to make, she seems to suggest. The trick of her stories is that there emotional gratification in knowing that a decision was made, but we don’t know which path was taken.Salaam’s stories are fascinating. In particular, I liked “Debris”, “Ferret”, and “Ancient, Ancient”. “Rosamojo” was hard for me to read--I found it triggering--but it is a very good story._____1: I need to write this post already about My Issues With The Word Diversity.2: Although, if you’re into short speculative fiction featuring Black characters you should really check out BLACK BEAUTY, too.3: The exception to this is “Rosamojo”. It is a very good story, but if you are triggered by sexual assault, especially as a survivor of childhood trauma, tread with caution.4: I’m ace, man, I’m not getting the same sex-as-rapture thing these characters are getting.

I love short stories and Salaam's collection was wonderfully different. I didn't know what I was getting into, but I was quickly caught up in her various worlds.Desire: The opening story took me straight to Africa and warring, ancient gods and a woman who rediscovers her sexuality after years of marriage and children. I felt for all the characters, mortal and immortal. One of my equal second favourites.The next three stories (Of Wings, Nectar and Ancestors, MalKai's Last Seduction and At Life's Limits) are about WaLiLa and her group, and they are strange and wonderful. I don't want to say too much and spoil the magic of these three. But I tell you, I found my body swaying after the last story to invisible music and my feet tapping.I've read Rosamojo before and it makes me alternately mad and sad every time I read it. I want to wrap my arms around her, but she doesn't need me. She's strong.Battle Royale and Ferret both perplexed and intrigued me.K-USH: The Legend of the Last Wero was my other equal second favourite of the collection. I would like to read more about these people.Marie was fantastic, a story about a woman rediscovering herself and her culture. I cheered for her.The final story, Pod Rendevous, blew me away. Loved it. Again, I would like to read more about this culture.So much of this collection was about metamorphosis, either just about to happen or in the thick of it. This is a beautifully realised collection that will open your eyes and your mind.

I bought this book after finding out it was a co-winner of the 2012 James Tiptree, Jr. Award. As one might expect from this award the book is a powerful commentary on gender relations but also well-crafted fiction.However if one is a casual reader of science fiction, fantasy, or horror this type of book may be quite frustrating for you. You cannot read it quickly, you cannot read it casually, you must engage with each story one at a time, you must roll the ideas and images in your head for a while to understand and appreciate them.Salaam's work goes beyond gender discussion into race issues, family dynamics, personal conflicts, and the a multitude of possible futures, pasts, and alternatives. None of her characters -- female or male -- are perfect or straightforward. If you can handle that then this book may be well worth your effort. For teachers out there this would be a very powerful book to include in a contemporary literature, gender studies, or race studies course but you will have to devote a few weeks to it to fully get students through it and to help them wrestle with the concepts.

Salaam's a true master of the craft; I read her to learn as much as to enjoy. Her plots are delicately constructed, but I think of them in jeweler's terms. They are the setting for the gems that are her scenes that ooze passion, emotion, and sensuality. With clever formatting, she achieves cinematic intercut scenes, modulates the voice of characters to let us see them from the inside, and shows the scene from such different perspectives, your head spin if it wasn't all so enthralling.People who know my work should note, Salaam writes with an unabashed sexuality. If you prefer my LDS chick lit, this is *definitely* different. Be ready to check preconceptions and inhibitions at the door. In Salaam's world, the depths of one man's shame are as expansive as our universe and the fall of an angel from a religion older than time evokes a soft pain washed away by morning. A former student of Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson, Kiini Ibura Salaam takes the genre in new and mind blowing directions.

Chapter OneFIRST THERE WAS a snapping sound . . . then a combination of rushing wind and sheer terror. One thousand feet of empty space separated Murphy from the raging river and instant death.For a split second he was suspended in midair like an eagle soaring in the sky. Then gravity took over. Adrenaline surged through his body and his grip tightened on the cable like a vice. Teeth clenched together, barely breathing, all he could do was to desperately hang on.***As Murphy first approached the one-hundred-and-fifty-foot-wide gorge, he could see two cables spanning the void attached to large trees on either side. The first cable was low to the ground; the second, about six feet above. Hanging from the center of the top cable was what looked like a manila envelope twisting in a gentle breeze.He shook his head. That must be the prize.As Murphy moved closer to the edge, he reached up, grabbed the top cable, and pulled hard. Very tight.Then he carefully leaned out and looked over the edge. The sight of the wild Arkansas River one thousand feet below almost took his breath away.Do you really want to do this, Murphy? As much as you love adventure, someday Methuselah is going to get you killed.He carefully surveyed the surroundings looking for the slightest movement. Although he could see no one, his skin began to crawl with the eerie sensation that he was being observed.He took several deep breaths then slowly inched his way onto the cables. Holding on to the top cable with both hands and standing on the bottom cable, he bounced up and down to test their strength.As he ventured out on the cables, he realized that he had two problems: the up-and-down motion and the back-and-forth motion: the back-and-forth motion, in particular, put more weight on his hands when his feet were not directly under his body. If he had to use up his upper body strength to move the seventy-five feet to the center, it would be a very long way back.It didn't take him long to realize that it was not a good idea to look down at the potential thousand-foot fall.Keep your mind on the envelope and not swinging back and forth.It took Murphy almost fifteen minutes to reach the envelope. The closer he got to the center of the gorge, the more his swinging motion of the cables increased and the more his body weight on the lower cable caused the distance between the two cables to stretch. Even though he was six foot three, his arms were now extended above his head to almost his full reach.Only three more feet to go, he thought reassuringly.***Murphy smiled to himself as he drove into his reserved parking spot on the Preston University campus. Arriving early gave him some precious minutes alone to gather his thoughts before his classes began.A good night's sleep . . . great cup of coffee . . . and a bright sunny morning with no clouds in the sky . . . it's great to be alive.The manicured lawns and lush trees made a striking contrast against the blue sky. The smell of magnolias filled the air. Murphy had grown to love the southern lifestyle. He also had grown to love his classes in biblical archaeology. In three years, they had become some of the most popular courses at the university. He was grateful for the opportunity he had to combine his love for archaeology with his love for the Bible. Everyone seemed to enjoy his lectures. Everyone, that is, except Dean Archer Fallworth.***Murphy glanced up as Shari bounced into the office, her sparkling green eyes alive with energy."You seem pretty happy for an assistant who's late to work," Murphy teased."I would have been here early if I didn't have to stop to pick up your mail," she replied, smiling and dropping a stack of letters, magazines, and a small box on his desk.The brown-paper-wrapped box caught his attention. It bore no return address, only the name Tyler Scott. There was no sound when he shook it.Shari was pretending to be busy, but Murphy could see her eyeing the box. It could be some unusual new artifact from a distant land. She was a dedicated archaeologist, and she was extremely curious. Because Murphy loved to tease Shari, he set the box down, picked up his lecture notes, and started to review them."Aren't you going to open it?" Shari asked."Open what?""You know exactly what. "What do you think that means?""I think it means trouble.""Trouble?""Who else would send a strange riddle and leave it unsigned?"Shari's look of curiosity changed to a look of anxiousness. "Do you think it is from Methuselah?""Good guess, Shari. I wonder what he is planning now."***Murphy was now close enough to reach the manila envelope twisting in the wind. His left hand bore his entire weight on the top cable as he reached out and removed the envelope with his right.He shoved the envelope down the neck of his shirt for safety, then grabbed the cable again with both hands. After a few deep breaths, he began to walk carefully back across the cables toward his starting point."Are you having fun, Dr. Murphy? I know I am," Methuselah's voice boomed out, almost causing Murphy to lose his balance.Where was the sound coming from? Murphy glanced around, but over the roaring of the waters below and the blood pounding in his ears, he had no clue."I think that it has been too easy for you so far. Don't you think so too, Dr. Murphy?"Murphy tried to speed up his efforts to reach the safety of the canyon wall.Methuselah's laugh echoed from the nearby rocks. "Slow down, Murphy. There's no need to hurry."With that, the cable under Murphy's feet gave way. Instantly all of his weight shifted to his hands and arms as he dangled above the gorge.Working frantically, Murphy was able to swing his legs up and catch the heel of his right foot, then his left, on the upper cable. Now he was hanging above the gorge by his legs and arms."How long do you think you can hang on, Dr. Murphy?" Methuselah called out, cackling."Long enough do slide across the cable and wring your neck!" Murphy cried."Now, now, Doctor. You sound as if you might be upset. Let's see if we can make it a little more interesting for you."Methuselah's cackling laugh increased, and then the upper cable snapped. Murphy could feel himself falling.***"Do you have any idea what the riddle means?" Shari asked with a puzzled frown as she twirled one of her jet-black pigtails in her fingers."No, but I'm sure that it's one of his coded messages. I think we'll have to take it apart piece by piece.""Well, he does mention 'He's waiting for you to come' five different times. That must be significant.""It must be a key thought. Let's start with the last stanza. 'Don't be a blunder-head the Spanish name it . . . for the color red.'""Could that Spanish word be the name for a state? The state of Colorado?""Good, Shari. This Tyler Scott he mentioned has been caught.""Maybe he has been caught telling a lie or caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Or caught being late to work for picking up some dangerous mail." Shari grinned.Murphy smiled. "Or maybe he's been caught by the police. Look at the phrase 'his time is slow.' He may be doing time in prison.""That would tie in with the 'gates' and that 'he cannot go' but you must come to him. How about 'gorgeous sight, a Royal delight'? What's that all about?""Hmmm. Colorado--prison--gorgeous sight--a Royal delight."Murphy paced the floor, repeating those words and brushing his fingers through his hair. Then he stopped suddenly and looked at her."I think I've got it.""Well, don't keep me in suspense. What have you got?""When I was a young boy I visited Colorado with my parents. We flew into Denver and rented a car and spent almost a month exploring the state. On one of those trips we went to Colorado Springs and Pike's Peak. From there we went to a town called Pueblo. West of Pueblo is Ca–on City. What do you think it is famous for?""Cañons?""Quick, Shari. No, it's famous for the Ca–on City State Penitentiary. It has a bizarre history.""Bizarre sounds like it's right up Methuselah's alley. It's his kind of place. He should live there permanently.""It was the home of the Do-It-Yourself Hanging Machine. One of the prisoners designed a self-triggering platform that would eliminate the need for a formal execution. The person who was to die would pull the lever himself. The machine operated through a series of pulleys. The pulleys would put three hundred pounds of pressure on the rope. This would throw the prisoner's body upward and instantly break his neck. Everyone thought that this was an improvement over strangling slowly on the end of a rope.""Yuk! That doesn't sound like much of an improvement to me," Shari exclaimed."Well, the rest of the prisoners on death row didn't like it either. They then installed Colorado's first gas chamber, called Roy's Penthouse, in honor of Roy Best, the warden of the prison."Their most famous prisoner was Alfred Packer, the first 'Hannibal the Cannibal.' He was put into prison for eating other people.""Where do you come up with these things?" Shari knew that Murphy's mind was loaded with strange trivia. Sometimes it drove her crazy. "What does that have to do with the note?""I'm getting to that. Near Cañon City is the Royal Gorge . . . get it? A gorgeous sight, a Royal delight. The world's highest suspension bridge spans the gorge at the height of 1,053 feet. Feeling the bridge move on its cables and the surface shake under you as cars drive by is quite an experience."Next to the bridge is an Aerial Tram with one of the steepest incline railways ever built. In some places the distance between the gorge walls narrows to only thirty feet. It's truly spectacular. They've even built an amusement park there."I'll bet you a Sanskrit manuscript that Tyler Scott is a prisoner in the Ca–on City State Penitentiary. Shari, call the prison and check if they have an inmate named Tyler Scott. Next week is spring break, and I could do with a little vacation."***Murphy heard a buzz, then the sliding sound of a metal door shutting and locking behind him. He was in a small cubicle with one wooden chair placed in front of an inch-and-a-half-thick glass window. On the wall next to the window was a phone.Murphy looked around. The drab green paint was chipped and scratched. Names and messages were etched into the old surface. It looked as if it hadn't been painted in twenty years.After another muffled buzz, Tyler Scott entered the chamber opposite of the glass window. Tall and thin, and wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, he looked to be about twenty-seven years of age. His blond hair was uncombed.Murphy picked up the phone. "My name is Michael Murphy," he told Scott. "I'll get right to the point of my visit. This may sound strange, but I think you may have a message for me. Am I correct?""I don't get many visitors. Even my parents stopped coming about a year ago. They keep telling me that I'll never amount to anything. They say that I'm a loser." Depression and despair had etched lines on his young face. "I don't know what this is all about.""Neither do I," said Murphy."A couple of months ago a stranger came to visit me. He told me that a large man named Murphy would probably come and ask for a message. He left some money for me to buy magazines and cigarettes.""What did he look like?""He was tall and in his midsixties, with gray hair and lots of wrinkles. They're teaching me auto mechanics. I hope to get a job when I get out.""I'm sure you will. Besides the money, I'll leave a book for you with the guards. I think it will help you create a new life for yourself."On the way out Murphy left some money and a Bible for Tyler Scott. He put a note inside suggesting that the young man start reading in the Gospel of John.As Murphy drove the ten miles from Ca–on City to the Royal Gorge, memories began to flood his mind. He remembered his father taking him on the railroad that ran at the bottom of the gorge. They had eaten lunch on the train and ridden the open-air observation cars to view the canyon from below. His highlight was going over a hanging railroad bridge with the class five rapids below them.What a great time I had with my dad. If Tyler Scott had had a caring dad, would his life be any different?Murphy parked his car and put on his day pack as he thought about what he might be facing. He strode across the suspension bridge, proceeded west next to the gorge, leaving the amusement park and people behind him. I would have given this book a significantly higher rating, probably a 4 except for one thing- it ends suddenly when a whole bunch of conflicts and other story lines are taking place. There should have been at least one more book in the series, but there isn't. I've never seen a story that ends with so much unfinished business. The Babylon Rising series is pretty good overall. But having no ending practically ruins it for me. I wasn't expecting it to be some "happily ever after" ending. But there are many wicked characters in the story that should have been destroyed, and other conflicts and story lines that should have been resolved. I'm very disappointed with the author's for ending it like this.

Great series to start, but... where's book 4, 5 etc? The author takes you to a place where you have a vested interest in the story and then just drops you off in the wilderness of unanswered questions, incomplete endings, etc. is inexcusable. There are so many active story lines that are just dropped with no closure at all on any of them. It's not that I didn't like the ending, it's that there WAS no ending, the author just left you hanging after reading all those books.This might be explained if the author had suddenly take ill or had a major life event and just quit writing, but no, he's written several books since including (ironically named) The End Series. Well... fool me once... not gonna try to kick that football again Lucy.

I have enjoyed this series of books although after the first two, the plots are quite predictable. One thing I have found with the Kindle versions is that there are a lot of missing words and misspellings. When I read book 3, and it ended rather abruptly, seemingly in the middle of a thought, I questioned whether I had gotten to whole book. Then I thought perhaps the next book would pick up where this one left off. It didn't. The Edge of Darkness, while enjoyable was just a predictable as the previous ones. But when I reached the last few pages and some sections were repeated at least twice, and it ended literally in mid-sentence, I am again wondering whether I am getting the entire book.

So far this is the end of the " Babylon Rising" series. It has been a great ride, so many twists and turns! I thought this would be the end of the series however, LaHaye has led us to the edge,and left us there with so many questions to be answered. Look for another spell binding sequel!! I will!!!

No! No! No!!! This can't be the end of the Babylon Rising series. I was hooked and even bought the the fourth book and the audible version because I had to finish reading the series to the very end! 😕 (I borrowed the first three books from the New York Public library). But what a let down. There are too many unanswered questions. I wonder if Bob Phillips or Jerry B. Jenkins could write the fifth installment.A great series should never just putter out with no real conclusion. SOMEONE SAVE US!!!

I enjoyed the story, especially as it talked about biblical prophesy. However, the translation into e-book format was frustrating. There are many words left out of sentences throughout the book. Oddly, it seems that there was a problem with the character Shari’s name. When she was present in the story her name was frequently left out of sentences or misspelled. That caused me to have to reread sentences frequently to figure out what it really meant to be saying.

There are lots of typos in the ebook version I purchased. The writing is good though there is not as much attention to detail as I've grown to expect with LaHaye. I'll see what the next books in the series bring! BTW one name in the book, a key character, was not typed into the ebook throughout most of the book! and really slowed my reading over those parts. Either the publisher or the editor should double check wording before publishing or offering for purchase! When paying for books it is reasonable to expect the word flow to be correct!!! Really slows a speed reader down!

Wasn’t really what I thought it was.

charming piece, well written, straightforward story with medical forensic detectionif you subscribe to the New Yorker, you can find this in their online archives

I love this book, maybe because I used to watch Dragnet and a “Just the facts, Ma’am” story was interesting to me. It merges science with history and shows what a master investigator can deduce from just a few bones and teeth. The sad part is the pilot violating rules and trying to fly across cloud covered mountains cost over 20 people their lives. I’ve read it several times and will again. They are still finding crash sites in Papua New Guinea, I just read about one last week. Wish it was on Kindle.

This book reminds us of the ultimate cost of war. We visit a crashsite that lies undisturbed where it was swallowed up in a New Guinea rain forrest decades before. The plane lies in pieces with many articles curiously intact, and unidentified bones lie strewn about. It was my first introduction to identifying the dead from the dna stored inside, as I read this long before CSI ever hit the airwaves. What stuck me most was how family members felt that their long lost relatives were at last found. Some had old nagging questions answered, while others felt it was almost annoying to have old ghosts revisit their lives. In my own family, we still tell the story of a lad of eighteen who never came home from the Civil War, and remember his mother and siblings and some of his friends. We hold dear the letters he sent home along with his photos. Most of the families who have lost men from that war have long forgotten them, and now it is happening to the dead of World War Two. Their parents are now long gone. Their children still hold dear the vague memories they have of their fathers if they ever met them at all. Some of their wives never remarried and still think of them daily, still missing their young men into their own old age. Some of them moved on long ago, and don't want to open old wounds by remembering the past. Their brothers and sisters have never stopped missing them. You will always see them salute the flag when it passes in parades. The technical portions in this book are very well explained, and long dead young men come back to life, but for me, the most thought provoking pages described how men gone missing in war are remembered, and then almost without exception lost in the mists of time.

I wish "Book Titles" would be more descriptive (at least in "Sub-Titles")[Who, What, When, Where, Why]It took me awhile, to find out this book was about...[Who] - "WEEZIE" 5th AF, 90th BG, 320th BS[What] - WWII B-24 Liberator Heavy Bomber (found)[When] - 1980s[Where] - 30 miles northeast of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, Australia[Why] - I won't give away any secrets! I bought this book to introduce the celebration of Diwali to the children at my school. We have a large population of families from India and we wanted to represent them with a few Diwali festivities. One of the mothers came in and read this book to the children and it provided a wonderful explanation of what Diwali is. The illustrations are gorgeous as well!

This is one book in an entire series of board books with the goal of opening up the youngest listeners to the variety of cultures and some of their celebrations. I've read two of these already, but this one is my favorite.Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated around this time of year (end of October/early November). In these pages, the background behind Diwali is very quickly hit upon (the goddess and how the light invites her in), allowing the main focus to remain on the preparation and practices during the five day celebration. For a board book, there is enough text, but it never comes across as too much. Rather, it's perfect to read-aloud and flows with enough of a 'story time' flare to keep it interesting. It probably won't hold the interest of the youngest listeners, but children ages four and up will pick up on the information and have no trouble understanding what is going on.The illustrations are bright, detailed and bring the scenes to life without growing confusing or over-packed. The people's expressions bring across the joy and make it difficult not to want to dive into the pages and celebrate with the characters.While Dewali is a celebration many readers may not have heard about before, this book does a great job of making the basic background and rituals understandable. While younger listeners will enjoy gazing at the illustrations, slight older listeners (ages four and up) will be more able to grasp the holiday and the celebration.I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed this one the most in the series, so I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
