ALEKSANDRA CRAPANZANO is the recipient of the James Beard Foundation M.F.K. Fisher Award for distinguished writing, and her work has appeared in several anthologies including Best Food Writing 2013. She writes the "A Little Something Sweet" dessert column for the Wall Street Journal and frequently writes their lengthy "Mega Meal" page. She has written about food for the New York Times Magazine, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Saveur, and Travel & Leisure. Now in New York, Crapanzano spent much of her childhood living in London, and continues to visit many times a year.

I have a groaning shelf of cookbooks that spans a wall in my kitchen. I refer to them all frequently, but until I bought The London Cookbook, I had never curled up on the couch and read one cover to cover. This is far more than a compendium of recipes – The London Cookbook is a chronicle of a historic city’s changing relationship to food, and a loving profile of the chefs who led its transformation. Crapanzano focuses on a baker’s dozen of innovative restaurants, introducing each recipe with insight into the chef who created it. By the time you read from Light Fare and Soups all the way to the TWO chapters on dessert (the author is a woman after my own heart) you come to know these chefs as characters in a delicious story, whose personalities come to life as flavorfully as the recipes on the page. Speaking of which, the recipes are inspiring and impressive, but simple enough for a home cook like me to create. And I don’t think I’ve ever read a cookbook with directions as straightforward and enjoyable to read. It's gorgeously produced, so it is perfect for holiday gift-giving. Buy this book, but be forewarned: you may pick it up to make one of its 100 delicious dishes, only to find yourself so caught up in reading it that you end up having cereal for dinner.
Having followed Aleksandra Crapanzano's amazing recipes for years in the Wall St. Journal, Food & Wine, and the NYtimes, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. An extraordinary writer, she blends the poetic and personal with the passion we all share for delicious, exceptional food. In this collection she has clearly done exhaustive research, offering a diverse and mouth-watering array of recipes to choose from. I couldn't wait to dive in and immediately made the Birch Sap old Fashioned from Oskar's Bar -- insanely good. Going to serve them over the holidays. Also happened to have a bunch of farro lying around and made the Farro and Porcini soup -- so easy and perfect for the season- hearty and autumnal. Can't wait to make the Kakuni, the Spiced Heritage Carrots among others-- and every dessert in the book. 5 stars, easy!
The London Cookbook is as much a cozy and thoroughly enjoyable read as it is a splendid cookbook. I curled up by the fire and spent some time getting to know it. I was first captivated by the wonderful and inspiring London photos of people, places and restaurants as well as the lush and mouth-watering photos of food. I was also struck, from the first page, by the very careful attention to design and detail, the thoughtful organization and progression of stories and recipes. My second focus was on the fascinating stories of the chefs who have brought their genius to bear in the now legendary creation of spectacular food in London. There is a wonderful mix of the novel and the traditional that creates the vibrant food dynamic that Crapanzano brilliantly captures. And she is no anonymous narrator, which makes these stories more personal still. My third focus was on the recipes themselves, appreciating the use of accessible ingredients and the straightforward and coherent instructions to create the recipes which certainly offer something (many somethings) appealingly seductive for all tastes.There is something I adore about sharing Crapanzano's personal relationship with food. I treasure Nigel Slater's warmth and respect for the intimate and personal cooking experience and Patricia Well's passion for the varied Parisian culinary scene. Both take food and invite the reader into the story of that food, thereby expanding the reader's life experience, giving the food a reason and a context. In the same way, I savor Crapanzano's obvious love and deep respect for her favorite chefs and food havens in London and applaud her for her success in conveying a sense of place, a sense of passion, of art, and a sense of the profoundly delicious in a way that is the beautifully crafted London Cookbook.
This is an amazing collection of recipes! From the first page, the book just draws you in. The bit in the beginning giving context for British Food is incredibly well written. But of course, the best part are the recipes. There's a fun mix of storytelling about the restaurants or chefs, recipes and photos. The recipes are presented simply and easy to follow. And the photos are stunning, which inspire me to cook these dishes. Direct quote from my 8 year old, "This is DELICIOUS!" This book is a must for anyone who enjoys food.
i have bought a number of cookbooks recently and usually find only one or two very good recipes . But this cookbook has page after page of them. and they are surprising and original and one longs to cook all of them. My solution was to immediately buy two more copies for my children who are both adventurous cooks, with the proviso that when I go to their houses , they will cook meals from the London cookbook.
London Cookbook is a compendium of recipes from the stars of modern English cuisine, and a tribute to the fact that there is now, after innumerable centuries, a style of English cooking that can actually be called a cuisine. Crapanzano starts off with an expertly distilled history of this phenomenon, from Elizabeth David (from whose books I myself learned to cook) to the iconic River Cafe. Very many of these recipes borrow from other cultures, but British ingredients like treacle and horseradish put in the twist. And, thankfully, there is even an outstanding recipe for fish and chips.
This book is so great. I live in England years ago and don't necessarily leap at the thought of London cuisine. But that's all different now. This is the new London - spicy, seasonal, eclectic - and it's awesome. There are amazing recipes in here - the Potted Shrimp is incredible, and so is Bakewell Tart from Rules. The Spanish Cassoulet is my new standard and has replaced my tried and true French recipe. This week, I’m making the recipe for Ottolenghi’s pork belly and starting on the Garam Masala Christmas Pudding with Nutmeg Custard. Wish me luck!! Also, Crapanzano’s writing is evocative and eloquent, making this book as much a pleasure to read, as it is to cook from. Highly recommended Also, a perfect holiday giftâ€
