Each recipe comes with a description of how it is related to the Harry Potter stories. There are also historical facts about the dishes and England which I really appreciated for their educational value for my daughter. The book itself is very pretty, with paper made to look like parchment and an appealing layout, font, coloring, etc - the edges of the paper have a torn parchment effect. We made several of the recipes for a Harry Potter themed birthday party for my husband and daughter at Halloween and they all turned out great. I don't like seafood, but my husband does so I made the Bouillabaisse seafood soup and it was a huge hit. I made a giant pot and every last drop was eaten. Everyone loved it and thought it was beyond restaurant quality. I also made the Guinness stew which I personally loved and was also a big hit. The almond-Ginger-Peach Treacle Tart was FANTASTIC. I didn't have golden syrup so I used maple syrup and it was great. I also made bangers and mash - though I just used store-bought sausages which I cooked on the grill - but I used the book's mashed potato recipe and there was not a speck of potato left in the bottom of the pot - they were the first thing to go! There is a pumpkin juice recipe, which I used for inspiration but ended up making up my own version. There is NOT a butter beer recipe, but there are several recipes for butter beer online. I tried two and both did not turn out well. Considering how well everything else I made from this book turned out, I wish it had a butter beer recipe. Otherwise it has pretty much everything else from the movie you could think of.My only other complaint is that it is a little hard to find the recipes. They are ordered into themed chapters: "Good food with bad relatives..." etc; and these chapters are listed in the table of contents in the front of the book. There is also an index in the back of the book. But the problem is since these are dishes with odd and unfamiliar names, I often cannot remember what they are called in order to easily look them up in the index. I wish each recipe was listed in perhaps small font under each chapter in the table of contents, because that would be far more helpful as I can remember about where in the book I saw one and figure it out from there. But I like the book enough that I did not take off a star for this little quibble.
Great sounding recipes (have only tried one or two so far). I love how she pulls some of the 'quieter' food items out of the books (it's not all Butterbeer and steak and kidney pies) The tie-in with the Harry Potter books and where the food item might appear within is a bit more than I would have expected, and then you get [muggle] history thrown in, too! All of it makes this a fun book to actually READ. Yes, I read the whole book, marking recipes as I went.I admit I am disappointed that (once again) someone thinks cauldron cakes are pancakes/flap jacks...but that's to be expected and does not diminish the value of this collection (it's just worth noting in-case, like me, you are searching for the perfect cauldron cake recipe).
Recipes include: Butterscotch Brew, Butterscotch Brew Ice Cream Soda, Butterscotch Brew Slushies, Double Chocolate Ice Cream Cones, Paddington Burgers, Triple Power Icy Lemon Pops, Chocolate and Raspberry Ice Cream Cones with Chopped Nuts, Pumpkin Juice, Strawberry and Peanut Butter Ice Cream Cones, and Ice Cream Sundaes.Really, regular summery food with a Harry Potter-themed backstory for each (including which book and chapter in case you want to refresh your memory).
I'm here like most people, I think, wanting to know a good butterbeer recipe. I fell in love with it on my honeymoon trip to Universal Studios last year and my husband and I have craved it ever since. So, when I came across this ebook AND it was free- I knew I needed to get this. I love all the recipes and ideas in this and know I will definitely be making more than just the butterscotch treats! :) I also like the intros above the recipes that not only tell you when they had something like this, but it also helps set the mood where you feel you can be right there with them, enjoying.
I recently went to universal studios to go to the Harry Potter theme park. It was a great time by there were so many wonderful things to buy that were Harry Potter themed products. They also had a few restaurants that had the food from Harry Potter. I really wanted to try them at home. I found this book while I was there and immediately wanted it. The price however was not budget friendly. I was able to look it up on my kindle fire and get it for half the price.
The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook is an amazing little read. It is a great cookbook filled with lots of recipes inspires by the Harry Potter book series by J.K. Rowling. I have used recipes from this cookbook in tons of settings. As a teacher, used some of them in my classroom. I even used them when nannying or babysitting as a special project for the children. I have even used some of the recipes when hosting a party with other Potter Heads such as myself.
I like the recipes, but relating most of them back to Harry Potter was a bit of a stretch. I downloaded this to see if it might be worthwhile to buy the full version, but I'm not convinced. As long as this remains free, it's worth a look, but I wouldn't pay for it. I haven't tried to make anything yet, but a couple recipes show promise, though there appears to be a few mistakes that should be edited.
Never tried to make homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker but would love to give it a try after reading this book. Pumpkin juice recipe sounds interesting too. These are recipes from the original Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook not new recipes.
