About the Author

Stephen is a behavioral social scientist who serves as the Principal Scientist at HelloWallet, an independent financial guidance company. He conducts original research on financial behavior and coordinates the research efforts of HelloWallet’s advisory board of leading behavioral economists and psychologists. At HelloWallet, he’s helped build an engaging product that helps users take control over their finances. The impetus for this book comes from the challenges he and the rest of the HelloWallet team faced along the way, as they learned to apply the behavioral literature to consumer products and consulted with companies similarly searching for effective ways to enable behavior change.Prior to joining HelloWallet, Dr. Wendel co-founded two IT companies, and conducted research on the dynamics of political behavior. He’s the co-founder of Action Design DC, a Meetup of over 800 practitioners and researchers applying behavioral science to their products, and serves as a mentor at 500 Startups and 1776 DC. He and his wife live in the DC area, with a small kid who loves to sing.

When I first saw the title 'designing for behavioral change' I was too skeptical to buy. A few days later it came back to mind and I decide to take a chance since it's the only book I've seen on behavioral based product design. And I'm really glad I did. Here's why.1). It gives a thorough review of the literature on behavioral economics and other close social sciences that give you the why behind Stephen's process. The process he uses is arduous, but one I think is realistic given the subject.2) You read about Stephens actual projects throughout which makes it feel more real and attainable.3) The chapters have great summaries at then end so you can get to the main themes easily later on.In all, a great book if you're into this science,

Stephen Wendel has done a great job of outlining some very practical steps toward designing digital products for behaviour change. Wendel give particular attention to distinguishing between lean (or agile) versus traditional development environments. My biggest critique was that this book felt overly wordy and was much more difficult to read than many other books that I have read on the same topic. Wendel seemed to get bogged down in too much information about certain topics at times which left me wondering if I could skip the rest of a section or if there would be some added value in the remainder of the book. If I were to read it again I would start with the final chapter (it is a very good summary of the contents of the book) and then go back to the sections that may be of particular interest. I am looking forward to putting these principles into practice on my next project.

A great book for those looking to leverage technology to help drive behaviour change. My personal context is that of mobile applications and devices, and the book lends itself well to this area. Beyond the basic explanations in psychology and technology, this book goes into a lot of detail on how to design and run tests to verify your results. This fills a good half of the book and isn't something I was expecting, however it is valuable knowledge and applies good scientific reasoning to what you're trying to achieve.

Great practical book on human centered design makes behaviour change programs within reach of all

A waste of money. Full of chitchat (not even funny ones) and not informative at all - you have a feeling that the author wrote some chapters just to expand the volume of the book. The author mentioned that he does not have a design background - then why do you cover implementations (not only design implementation, but even coding) in the last 3 parts?! If you would like to learn more about UX mapping, there's a bunch of better options out there. If you are interested in behavior economy, read more serious literature like Thinking Fast and Slow or Nudge (as this book covers SO LITTLE of them). If you are looking for solid pattern suggestions in UX/UI design, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. You have better options like Don't Make Me Think or The Design of Everyday Things.

When you think of the title: Designing for Behavior Change: Applying Psychology and Behavioral Economics, what comes to your mind? Is it any of these things:How to find testers for your product. How to do A/B tests.Personas.Being a `lean' organization.Agile practices.None of these came to my mind -- which is why I was surprised to find them in this book. The short of it is this: this book has some great pearls in it, but there's a ton of noise you have to sift through. The issue comes from the author spending a lot of time on product management techniques, as mentioned above, which are orthogonal to the thesis. The title for this book should have been:Everything you need to know about building a product for self improvement. In that case, the parts of the book which are decidedly about product management, could be forgiven. The author also spends a lot of time either reexplaining things or taking a long time to make a point. It made me feel that the author was stretching material to hit a certain word count. For those who are like me and are interesting in the topic of, Designing For Behavioral Change, I suggest getting the book but only read the first 2 chapters and last 2 chapters. Skip all the stuff in the middle.

Not what I expected

Want to watch less TV? Put the batteries of your remote in the garage.Want to lose some weight? Put the junk food on the top shelf in the basement. When we tweak the environment to make bad habits difficult to engage in, our behavior changes. This works with encouraging good habits, too.Want people to do more recycling? Make the recycling bins extra large.Want your employees to eat more healthily? Make the salad bar the first thing they see in the canteen.“Designing for Behavior Change” looks at the various ways in which the design of (digital) products or services can change behavior DIRECTLY.Which is exactly the opposite of what advertising has been doing for the last 100 years.Whether we have yelled at people or tried a more creative approach, our industry has always assumed that attitudinal change precedes behavioral change. For people to change their behavior, we first have to change their attitudes.Wrong, says Stephen Wendel: Effective behavioral change is not the product of persuasion, but of strategic interface design. What’s more, after adopting a new behavior thanks to a clever design change (= do more recycling because of bigger recycling bins), people will actually change their attitudes, too (= consider themselves environmentalists).Want to be a truly effective communicator?Let the actions influence the beliefs.Let the attitudes revolve around the behavior.Wendel’s book could mark the start of a Copernican Revolution in advertising.Buy it, and you won’t miss it.

Last year, New Directions Publishing announced that it would be releasing a volume of the late Muriel Spark's essays entitled 'The Informed Air: Essays' in 2014. Shortly after, British publisher Carcanet Press Ltd advertised that it would be publishing a second volume of essays by Spark called 'The Golden Fleece,' which would see release on either side of the Atlantic first. Both would be edited by Spark's longtime friend and companion, Penelope Jardine. Now that the pair have been published, it is clear that each is essentially the same book with very minor changes, which include different organizational schemes and slight changes to the preface of the New Directions edition, which also incorporates a handful of stock photographs of subjects such as Robert Louis Stevenson, T. S. Eliot, Dame Edith Sitwell, the Boris Karloff incarnation of Frankenstein's monster, and the canals of Venice. The hardbound 'The Informed Air: Essays' is the better of the two, as its organizational system makes more sense, and because, in her altered preface, Jardine acknowledges that the pieces are not necessarily essays per se, but a combination of prose which includes reviews, journalism, interviews, broadcasts, speeches, and opinions as well as essays. This brief acknowledgement makes a world of difference, as Spark fans believing the book to be composed of intellectually sustained essays like those of Edmund Wilson or Gore Vidal are likely to be highly disappointed. Still, referring to these pieces as "essays" in the book's title represents a major folly when dealing with an author of Spark's caliber. Jardine writes that the still-mentally lucid Spark had a hand in choosing the pieces before her death in 2006, which makes the selection even more inexplicable. There are two broad types of compositions included: genuine essays to which Spark clearly gave serious thought, time, and attention and which are worthy of her international reputation, and what might be called 'incidental' pieces of a much looser, improvised and conversational nature, as if they were written quickly, perhaps to fulfill a small professional obligation, and with little further concern.Though the author's tart sense of humor remains intact ("the very thought of his touching my manuscript now offended my guts"), in the 'incidental' compositions Spark seems to have little to say and very little drive to want to express it.The reader learns, for example, that Spark likes to take careful notice of the neckties worn by newscasters; she believes the newscaster should purchase the necktie in question if attracted to it, but not wear it, or any other, while on the air, or indeed, at any other time.In the breezy and unfocused 'Love,' Spark conveys that she doesn't like to watch human beings "making love," but states that nothing was "more attractive and moving" than witnessing "a couple of young hares making love" outside her window in Florence. Her final word on the subject? "Love makes the world go round."Is Spark simply attempting to prove that she's a classic 'English eccentric,' if one by way of Edinburgh? Pieces like these are neither interesting nor informative, and their inclusion makes Spark seem like something of an egotist, as if in the last years of her life she believed that anything she wrote, felt, or thought was worth bringing to the public's attention. Or does the fault lie with Jardine? The answer to a potentially interesting topic like 'The Books I Re-Read and Why' is only: Proust's 'À la Recherche du Temps Perdu' and the Old Testament.'Pensee: The Supernatural' is only 57 words long, and ''My Most Memorable New Year's Eve' only 71, with several others being only slightly longer. As a result of these factors, 'The Informed Air: A Spark Miscellany' or 'The Nonfiction of Muriel Spark' would have been more accurate descriptions of the book's contents.Though it has been widely known for decades that Spark admired the work of Mary Shelley, Walter Scott, Cardinal Newman, Robert Louis Stevenson, the Brontes, Baudelaire, Proust, Eliot, and Max Beerbohm, Spark writes "the contemporary German author I most admire is Heinrich Boll," and readers will also learn she thought very highly of Henry James and Georges Simenon. The teenage Muriel loved Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone with the Wind' (1936), while the adult Muriel finds it "bad art" but--nevertheless--"impressive."In her review of Carl Jung's 'Answer to Job' (1952), Spark takes the great Swiss psychologist to task for ignoring the epilogue of the Book of Job, but clearly doesn't grasp the full range of Jung's complex, complicated thinking. Here, Spark appears to believe in and conceive of the Christian God in a very literal sense, where Jung's understanding of the Christian God, and his application of that understanding, is far more figurative throughout all of his work, even excessively so.The volume is somewhat redeemed by the longer legitimate essays, including critically important Spark compositions like 1960's 'What Images Return' and 'How I Became a Novelist' and 1970's 'The Desegregation of Art,' which is a piece of art in itself, and represents Spark at her vital nonfiction best. Especially considering the cultural, social, and political climate of the West during the last quarter century, it is worth underscoring that, in the latter, Spark unconditionally rejected 'the cult of the victim' so prevalent today.Spark is also moderately accomplished in her fluid, keenly observational writing about Ravenna, Tuscany, Venice, Rome, and Istanbul, while her pieces on Mary Shelley, Robert Burns, the Brontes and Emily Bronte in particular, the Victorians, Cardinal Newman, Guy Fawkes and felines, among others, are sophisticated, dynamic and intellectually engaging. But even here, in several cases, just as an essay begins to gain momentum and leave general information behind, it comes to an abrupt and unsatisfying halt.As Spark notably controlled public facts and information about her private life throughout her career, genuine admirers of Spark's writing, thought and vision will most likely approach 'The Informed Air: Essays' enthusiastically, but many are likely to be disappointed by the offhand, extemporaneous feel of at least a third of the selection, which seems present, and obviously so, only to pad out the volume. If all the lesser pieces would have been placed in an appendix at the back, the book would have been the finer for it.Ultimately, the volume diminishes rather than enhances Spark's reputation, making its publication something of a folly. Readers interested in knowing a great deal more about Spark's thoughts, likes, and tastes should read Martin Stannard's excellent biography of the author, 'Muriel Spark' (2009), which was essentially commissioned by Spark before her death, and then edited by Jardine before publication.

Do you love elegant prose? Do you enjoy spending your precious time in thoughtful ways? Do you tire easily of long articles that never end? Buy this book of short, concise, provocative, civilized, endearing, elegant, necessary for the civilized person to stay civilized essays and addresses. Muriel Spark reminds the reader that the world of the mind is available on one's nightstand or desk. With just 15 or 20 minutes of concentrated leisure, one's proper attitude towards civilization will be restored.

Even for a dedicated Spark fan like myself, this is thing gruel. Seems to be mostly short occasional pieces contributed to various publications. For the completist.

Excellent!
