Actually the best book on cooking I've read, Period. This isn't a "cookbook" where you just get a collection of recipes, this is a comprehensive textbook on the theories and history of Thai flavors and cooking. Well written and fun to read! There are recipes, but that's not the main focus. You learn why and how to use the ingredients, how the flavors interact. I've been able to replicate and improve upon the dishes at my favorite Thai restaurants thanks to this book.

This is an amazing Thai cookbook written by an amazing Thai cooking teacher. Anyone who wants to try their hand at cooking Thai food at home would do well to buy this book. The lovely illustrations and stories that go along with the recipes are icing on the cake.

Other reviewers have said that there is not much in the way of recipes in this one and it's true. There may be a total of 15 - 20 recipes - all good btw. But the commentary...that's the real gem of this book. I read the entire book, front to back and was greatly enlightened on the culture and art of Thai cooking. I bought other Thai cookbooks at the same time that I bought this one which had more recipes in those, but I always come back to this one for her (the author's) words of wisdom, explanations, and descriptions.

The author of this cookbook goes out of her way to present not only traditional recipes, but enough knowledge and technique to help you achieve traditional taste. This is no mere recipe book, it's more of a guide to Thai cooking.From the very start, Loha-Unchit explains everything about the essential components of Thai cuisine and exactly what they do to each dish. Interspersed amongst her recipes are stories related to the dishes that may seem sappy to some, but generally help explain what the cook is trying to achieve with each recipe.This book will definitely challenge and enhance your cooking skills. After preparing a few of the selections she presents, you won't just know how to whip up several dishes by rote- you'll have a very good understanding of the essentials of Thai cooking.

I have Kasma Loha-unchit's other book. I love having both her books. I enjoy reading them. I have yet to try her recipes. I did email her and asked her what type of wok to buy and she responded. I bought the American made wok and love it. I have had it for about 5 years now.

This cookbook is a game changer. One of my biggest gripes with Whole30 and Paleo meals is how time consuming the cooking and cleaning can be. The recipes are easy and straightforward. You don’t need to an Iron Chef to get them right. They don’t require super exotic ingredients, and as long as your pantry is fairly Paleo-centric, you probably have a lot of stuff on hand, already(almond flour, coconut aminos, ghee, etc...). I love that you can now peruse recipes by how they are prepared(such as, one sheet wonders, or one pot plans). I actually prefer Fast and Easy over the older Whole30 cookbook.Just a quick word for my fellow halal and kosher cooks, there are quite a few pork based recipes in here. I usually just sub out the pork for a similar cut of chicken and it works out great!

Pros:-Full page photos of most dishes-Variety in proteins used (chicken breasts, thighs, pork chops, pork tenderloin, ground pork, etc.)-Good amount of one pan recipes-Most recipes are meant to be complete meals including a balance of protein and veggies-First few pages recap the programCons:-Few traditional breakfast dishes--this is when I really need it to be fast and easy!-Serving sizes are much smaller than I'm used to eating. I feel it kind of steered away from one of the cornerstones of Whole30 which is to listen to your body, not focus on calories and restrictions. I learned to just increase the recipe by half in order to make it work for me and my family (2 adults, 3 small kids).-I consider some of the recipes neither fast nor easy if you're not used to cooking or just don't like to do it. A better describing word would be 'basic' because the recipes are unfussy and uncomplicated, but they still require lots of chopping, prepping, and cooking.-Some of the recipes have been outright bland. Most of them I've had to zhuzh them up with extra herbs and spices.

I did 3 rounds of Whole30 last year and started my 4th round on January 1st, so I am not a Whole30 newbie. The recipes are not exactly fast as they rely heavily on buying pre-cut fresh or frozen veggies. Many of the pre-cut frozen veggies in my local stores are not compliant (they may contain non-compliant oils or non-compliant veggies such as corn and peas). Some are also hard to find or really don't exist in a normal grocery store. I can't remember what recipe in here that I noticed that for, but in a salmon patty recipe in the another book it calls for canned sweet potatoes, which is almost impossible to find without added sugar. I made the orange chicken last night and because I had to cut up everything, it took me about 45 minutes and the dish was just okay. Also, I am not a big salad eater and about 1/4 of the book is salads (no surprise there...there are one of the few Whole30 meals that are rather fast and easy). Additionally, another 1/3 of the book is asian inspired recipes and that is my weakest area as a cook. I would have liked to have seen more hearty dishes and crockpot type meals. I used a gift card to buy this cookbook, so I don't regret getting it as there are about 10 recipes I plan on trying (the sheet pan recipes look really good), but I wouldn't pay money for it. If you love salads and asian inspired dishes, this would be an awesome cookbook. I actually think the recipes in the Whole30: The 30 Day Guide to Total Health and Food Freedom are way better. And...if you join Facebook Whole30 groups, people share really good online recipes.

Who likes to cook and eat yummy food? I do! Who likes to make two separate meals every night (one for me, one for my kids)? I don't! For some time, I've been wondering how to economically nourish my whole family (7 of us) with meals that we can ALL eat (AND not spend too much time in the kitchen). Melissa Hartwig's "Whole30 Fast & Easy" is proving itself to be an excellent solution for us!After receiving the book, I read through all the recipes, marked the ones I thought my kids would like, and then had my pickiest eater (8 year-old son) look through the recipes I selected and pick the meals he thought looked good. I was very pleased that he chose 54 new recipes for our family to try! :) I put together a 30-day dinner menu and purchased ingredients for the first week (which is coming to and end as I right this review). Because I already had on hand many of the ingredients in the recipes we chose, I only spent $35 for 6 nights of dinners (+1 night of leftovers) for our family of 7. That is awesome and so far, EVERY RECIPE I'VE MADE HAS BEEN SOOOOO DELICIOUS!!!! My kids have been willing to try the new recipes because it wasn't just me that picked them out and they have also found them to be yum!I usually try about 5 recipes from a cookbook before I make up my mind about whether or not it's a keeper. This one is definitely a keeper! The meals I've made using this book have been super yum AND satisfying (which means NOT food without breaks). This is what I've made so far:p. 165 Hearty Chinese Egg Drop Soup - I was hesitant to make this at first, but it turned out really great! Who knew?p. 139 Roasted Sausages with Potatoes & Cabbage - I doubled the potatoes and roasted them on a separate baking pan than the sausages and cabbage (perks of having a double oven). This was surprisingly filling! My hubby beat me to the left-overs the next day!p. 171 Green Chili Pork Stew - Super yum! My kids suggested I add carrots next time. I enjoyed the left-overs!p. 193 Italian Beef Soup - So, so good, but NOT food without breaks. Very satisfying! Next time I'll double the recipe so we can have leftovers.p. 121 Roasted Potato and Kale Hash with Eggs - Superb! The spices really work well on the potatoes and the eggs make it satisfying! So delish!!!Tonight we're going to try the Thai Chicken Sweet-Potato-Noodle Bowls on p. 160. I've given an A+ to all of those recipes I've tried and I am really looking forward to making more "Fast & Easy" meals for ALL my family! Melissa Hartwig's book should have been titled "Whole30 Fast, Easy, & Sooooo Delish!"

I love all of the Whole30 cookbooks. My favorite part of the original Whole30 book was it's suggested pairings (make it a complete meal) which made your decisions about what to make certain things with much easier. The Whole30 cookbook and this are much more limited in these suggestions which is the only thing I think it lacks. Otherwise, it's another gem! <3

I felt the book does not do enought to make people aware of how technology that is not yet available can facilitate the future success of their electronic commerce.No book can serve all needs in an area, so we can look forward to Ms. Seybold's next book. I enjoyed the personal touch as she described her own experiences with many of the companies involved. I hope she keeps in touch with them and us. I suspect she will based on the e-mails I get from her after registering on her site.

Patricia Seybold writes a good overview on the rules that e-commerce sites should use in the design and implemenation of their sites. SOME of the case studies are effective at reinforcing the rules highlighted. I would recommend just reading the introductions for each rule and the lessons learned sections. This is a good read but one in the end that could have been much shorter.

This book is too thin and fluffy. I managed to get through a few chapters, skipped to the middle, and then gave up. It contains the same standard stories I hear about every day. If it wrapped up uncommon stories, even if they were common sense, it would have some value. Boil it down to a checklist for your operating officer and webmaster, and you'd have it all.

This is one of the best BUSINESS books I have ever read. This book looks at eBusiness from the executive managers perspective.

With so much changes in the internet business, this is a good reading to understand how should you start, but new technologies are available now. This book was written in 98, so Patricia Seybold should rewrite.

Extremely dry technical illustrations, no step-by-step instructions. This is an old, technical manual that assumes you are already an expert in normal and advanced origami, with a new cover that gives the impression it's going to give you step-by-step instructions. However, the first step in each project is actually a finished origami base, such as the "frog" base becomes the "crane." But far more complicated. My 12-yr-old has an engineering mind and folds origami and cuts kirigami at expert levels, but this non-kusudama guide left us both struggling. Search here on Amazon for "kusudama" to find the correct 3D origami.

Fabulous book! If you understand basic origami instructions, this book is great. Don't buy the used copies though...I had to return mine as it came missing pages 2-18...not acceptable condition in my book, otherwise the book itself is great! :-)

The book is excellent but if you expect to see color picture there is none, and this could be a discourage for some people.

I bought it for my mom, and she had a blast. She made all kids of origami. She is hooked!

I ordered this book for some fun math activities at the end of the year. I'll need time to learn how to make the projects; some of them are quite complex. From a geometry standpoint, the book will be a useful extension at school.

Nicely illustrated, pretty easy to follow. Tried a few of the models finding them fun to do. Wouldn't recommend for someone just starting.

Rented this book for a semester for a sociology class as an eBook. In the end of the day, I didn't really need it at all as the amount of content we used from the book was redundant. The formatting of the eBook on a phone is terrible. The only time I could use it was on my computer and that was a bit of a struggle too. The author makes connections to a lot of recent-ish events so you can understand how sociology applies to real life and it does give you a lot of information on challenges that have appeared recently. I would recommend the book over the eBook as it is much better organized and more pleasant on the eyes to read.

My course was too accelerated to continue. Shipping back was easy.

Have you ever had a horrible nightmare from which you thought you wouldn’t be awakened from? A nightmare so bad that you felt deep consternation even after waking up from it. Quite glad did you become when realization came to you that it was just a dream - now you were in your warm bed, and you are safe. This book is the story of Ernest Shackleton and his 27 men. The difference between your nightmare and theirs is that there was no awakening for them- theirs was real. They lost their ship during Antarctic expedition, named "Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition."Before the expedition, Shackleton named the ship "Endurance" from his family motto, "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer). Very interesting is it to know the crew survived between the wreckage of their ship, Endurance, and their rescue only though tough endurance, so shows their story from this book. The author of this book, Alfred Lansing, was a journalist all his life. He has done a great job at compiling official sail records, each crew's journal, background world’s history, personal interviews, ship's manufacture features, and all the information relevant to Endurance and expedition. Through this book will you gain many new perspectives in respect to this expedition, if you already knew their story. If you didn’t know about them, while reading this book, you will feel as though you are their stowaway crew member, having survived along with them on their unexpected 17-month-long journey and be awed at how so did theyAt times, I slowed down and carefully read with wrinkles between my eyes with much concern for the crew members' well-being. I was worried something horrific might come upon the crew when they run out of food, water; some fell off the boat; many had frostbite; and one had gangrene on his toes from severe frostbite. At other times, I burst out laughing loudly at funny jokes that they made each other, and positive mindset, despite their grim ordeal.Shackleton's leadership could be a matter of interest to you. He showed countless courageous leadership decisions and sacrifices for his crew throughout the journey. Had it not been for his innate leadership, I am certain the rest of 27 men would not have seen their family ever again. On voyage, they would toast by saying "For our wives and children. May they never meet." Then did they not have a slightest inkling on how Shackleton would lead them from the grasp of death in the coming months.

What a page turner. Lansing is a master for the description of those explorers hardships, desire to follow Shacketon' orders. I kept saying to myself that there are few humans today that are as tough as those men. I recommend this book to add to the collection of those books that give us the knowledge of what it takes to conquer a goal.

The greatest adventure story of all time. Simply amazing. Purchase the hardcover 100th anniversary edition, that was just published.The actual photographs of the Endurance stuck in the ice are worth the price of the new edition. I have read this book several times overthe years and it never fails to excite.

I do not want to say anything that might diminish this incredible story or the heroism of all the men involved. But, this should have been a short story and not a full blown novel. There is not one moment of levity in the entire book. It is simply tension at a high level for page after page after page. There is only so much snow, ice, freezing water, freezing temperatures, waves, ice pack, ice pressure, wind, hopeless, etc., etc., etc. that a person can take. After a while it all becomes somewhat of a blur and is boring, especially when you know how the story ends. I only wanted to finish the book and move on to something more interesting. If that kind of book is what you are looking for, then you will love this book. It really is an incredible story and it is a story well told.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton set out on an expedition to make the first land crossing of the barren Antarctic continent from the east to the west coast. The expedition failed to accomplish its objective, but became recognized instead as an amazing feat of endurance. Shackleton and a crew of 27 (plus one stowaway) first headed to the Weddell Sea on the ship Endurance. Their ship was trapped by pack ice short of their destination and eventually crushed. Forced to abandon ship, the men were trapped on ice floes for months while they drifted north. Once they were far enough north that the ice thinned somewhat, they were forced to journey in lifeboats they'd dragged off the ship. After six terrible days, they made it to uninhabited Elephant Island; from there Shackleton and five other men set off in an open 22-foot boat on an incredible 800-mile voyage across the notoriously tempestuous Drake Passage to South Georgia Island, where they hiked across the island’s mountain range to reach a whaling camp. From there, they returned in a ship to rescue the men left behind on Elephant Island.That these men were able to survive in the harsh, barren conditions of Antarctica, where temperatures frequently fell below zero is amazing. It’s nearly unimaginable that these men could survive for almost two years, their lives marked by a seemingly endless stretch of misery, suffering, and boredom, not to mention the threat of starvation. At every turn, their situation seems to go from bad to worse. If this were a work of fiction, one would be inclined to claim the story was simply too far-fetched. But Endurance isn't just a tale of misery, it is a vivid description of their journey, the dangers they faced, and the obstacles they overcame. Through all of this, Shackleton has never lost a man.Alfred Lansing's book, written in 1958 from interviews and journals of the survivors, is now back in print. It’s a riveting tale of adventure, survival and hope. It is also a rare historical, non-fiction book that is as exciting as any novel. I’ve read a number of stories of survival and would rate this as the best of all I have read. This is one of the great adventure stories of our time. Don’t miss it.

This is an interesting book on terrorist organization that is not will known in the West. It might be a little bit of a dry read at times, but it contains a lot of great information. Overall, I liked the book.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-understand book about what’s going on with Boko Haram, told by someone who’s lived in the middle of all of the turmoil, this is the perfect book.

If you want to better understand the insanity of terrorism this book should be read

written by Author who spent years in the area and understands the political and economic micro-climate. Worth reading to help understand the Islamic uprising now taking place throughout the area.

smith has written a short but very informative book on the horrible subject matter concerning boko haram; he gives some background to the movement, if you can call i that, describes what it is believed by him to be & what it is not; despite the outrages committed in its name & they are that, he also details some of the abuses of the nigerian security services including the army; nigeria is a disaster, one of the most disfunctional & corrupt states not only in africa but the world; what is going on in that country is a mess with no easy solutions; as a matter of fact, with such a high birth rate in that environment, things may only get worse despite the oil wealth it has or could have if so much of it was not stolen ; the benefits of that wealth does almost nothing for the average nigerian

When the name Goodluck Jonathan appeared I had a mental smile. Finally a name I recognized and could pronounce. That was my one and only smile, mental or otherwise. A look at the terrorist group Boko Haram. I have long pondered how a ragtag group of terrorists managed to grow and increasingly run rampant committing ever more daring and deadly atrocities. Already there exists an imitation of if not an actual link to ISIS and almost surely cooperation with Al-Quaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) as well as possibly Al-Shabab. Although claiming to be in the name of religion these terrorists groups go against all that is holy, seeming rather to enjoy the opportunity to rob, rape, plunder and pillage while committing what can only be classified as genocide. I question why America has not stepped in when we as a country seek to eliminate these organizations posing an affront to humanity in the name of religion. This writing provides an examination of the inability or unwillingness of a government to confront and exterminate this plague. It further explains why we as a country stand on the sidelines. Also offering an insight to the question of financial support needed maintain and arm these groups. The most distressing take away is the plight of the inhabitants of this resource rich country, living in poverty and in constant fear of the aggressors. If one is to take for fact the findings of this report the aggressors are not only the terrorists but also those in the employ of the government assigned to protect the public. Although it can be somewhat dry it is a very worthy read for anyone seeking to understand the how and why behind the headline news stories, but the vivid descriptions of carnage will never be included in those headline stories.

Access to information, especially in a war zone, is difficult to obtain. Mike Smith is a journalist and off and on, he was able to gain access to Boko Haram zones of influence and personalities surrounding the conflict.I give Mike Smith credit for developing the historical influences leading up to the Boko Haram context. The first half of the book describes Uthman don Fodio's jihad of the early 19th century which eventually led to the Sokoto Caliphate; stretching from North West Nigeria to Northern Cameroon. The journalist then introduces Lord Lugard, the British colonial appointee charged with building connections with Nigerian chiefs in a race against the French who were moving down from areas of Niger and Chad.The conservative, yet distinctly Nigerian character of the Islamic Sokoto Empire in combination with British indirect rule slowly formed a unique Northern Nigerian personality in relation to the rest of the world. Fast forward almost a century and Mike Smith shows how influential reformers like Muhammadu Marwa of the Maitatsine movement and Mohammed Yousouf of the early Boko Haram were reactionary forces to the political, religious, economic and social perceptions of Nigeria.There are a few additional research points included by Mike Smith that better develop the setting. Interestingly, Uthman don Fodio, Muhammadu Marwa, Yousouf and Abubakr Shakau (current leader of Boko Haram) were NOT ethnic Hausa. Smith argues that at least Uthman, Yousouf and Shakau adopted more extremist Wahhabi positions on religious practice and theology. The Hausa dominated North has always mingled in a tense environment of political balance; a reality easily manipulated by would-be reformers.It could be due to my personal interests alone, but I found the first half of the book much more interesting the latter half. Despite the journalist's attempt to dig beyond the main headlines, the chapters get sucked in to the hype. Mike Smith describes a series of high-profile events from the viewpoint of a few local Nigerians, some privy to first hand-experience and others perhaps embellishing their information to protect or advance personal goals.Western media was particularly taken by the Chibok girl's kidnapping saga. In direct respect to his intended audience, no doubt, the book devotes a full chapter and more to a single event. It would be correct to say that strategic media and voicing launched a global awareness of Boko Haram for the better. But an author who claims to be better than the ordinary "parachute" journalist could have balanced the single media hog events with more environment nuances.The author has a heart for the Nigerian people and a visible concern for dignity and justice. In light of the many other books and articles that have been printed on Boko Haram, specifically by Nigerian authors, I can only barely recommend it as a worthy Boko Haram account.

I've read a lot of trading books including the two Market Wizards and this book is right up there. The one difference is that the traders are just not as well known. The results and methods that the traders have are expressed, which is very useful, and the stories are complete. Good job to the author for helping to add some color to the people's lives too. I highly recommend this book to students of trading, it's worth it.

Unlike many other books that discuss hedge funds, Inside the House of Money is both entertaining and useful. Specifically, it provides condensed interviews of several star investors (Jim Rogers, Peter Thiel, Yra Harris, Christian Siva-Jothy, etc) and some lesser known players in the global macro hedge fund industry. As the book covers "global macro", a wide range of investments are discussed - equities, commodities, bonds, options, interest rate options, and others. What makes this book better than other mainstream texts is the inclusion of useful, actionable information. Two particularly relevant topics include favorite trades and issues that worry managers. In total, the quality of content in this book inspires the reader to take notes.As one might suspect, there is often a tinge of eccentricity with certain top traders. It is an electric group of people, including a billionaire dot-com entrepreneur, former central banker, a Goldman Sachs star prop trader, and family office manager - in NYC, London, San Francisco, Chicago and even Miami. The breath of the traders and styles is impressive.One particular notable interviewee was Goldman Sachs prop trader Chrisitan Siva-Jothy. In the book, he discussed how he made millions in London making a lightning-fast bet that initial reports on 9/11 were, in fact, indicative of a terrorist attack. While this may be unsettling, it illustrates how top investors make their money - by seeing signals and patterns before others. On occasion, you will find wisdom to be incorrect. This can be due, in part, to the timing of the book's release. For example, Jim Rogers is somewhat ambivalent on gold suggesting that other commodities were superior investments. The Rodgers paragraph illustrates one problem with this book in that the author doesn't reveal the precise time of the interviews. Sometimes this can be inferred, but it would be nice if Drobny time-stamped the interviews.Overall, this is one of the best hedge fund texts covering a wide range of styles and investments. One possible improvement for more technical readers would be greater detail on specific trades. Also, as previously mentioned, the author should have provided the specific times of his interviews. Even with such shortcomings, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in trading or hedge funds in general.

It's a pleasure to say it: "House" is a worthy successor to Jack Schwager's "Market Wizards" series. Having first read it a few years ago, it's a shame I'm only just getting off my duff to review it now - in October 2008 - after so much has happened.As of this writing, Wall Street as we know it has "ceased to exist" (according to the WSJ). The investment banking model has gone up in smoke. More than one featured player in "House" - like Dwight Anderson's Ospraie fund for example - has violently gone the way of the dodo. No doubt at least one or two more will be carried out in the ongoing carnage that has brought about the worst year for stocks (and perhaps commodities too) ever. Ever!Needless to say, I greatly anticipate Drobny's updated and appended version (due out Jan 2009)...Awe inspiring turmoil aside, it's a great book. And with the financial crisis sucking Wall Street into the vortex, it is perhaps instructive to note how the big hedge fund players have seemingly split into two camps.On the one hand you have those like Ospraie, who were too exposed to commodities, or illiquid capital commitments, or maybe just leverage in general, to survive. On the other hand you have the big players like Farallon and Perry Capital (neither mentioned in "House") where little leverage is used at all. While the now defunct houses of Lehman and Bear thought nothing of taking on risks that would make a gun-slinging futures trader blanch, the best of the hedge fund survivors played it very close to the vest.When the 2008 smoke clears - and the fires are still billowing at this point - the nearly $2 trillion hedge fund industry will look a lot different (and a lot smaller). But I imagine the bloodletting will work to the advantage of the survivors... the players who truly internalize the lessons in "House," as opposed to merely paying lip service to them.There is another subtle yet marked division that stands out to me among "House" participants: those who cut their teeth on the equity side, and those who cut their teeth on the futures side.The equity players, not to put too fine a point on it, are (or at least were) generally more fast and loose with risk. They seemed altogether more likely to double down on bets going against them, and to congratulate themselves on doing so. This was freshly highlighted for me in the Dwight Anderson interview (which I reread closely for "clues" after the widely reported Ospraie meltdown).Anderson did not radiate feverish waves of self-destructive tendency (as, say, Victor Niederhoffer did in "Education of a Speculator"). And yet, in talking about his training, Anderson favorably references an ingrained habit of his mentor, Julian Robertson: the willingness to "ignore" price action, obtusely so if need be, and to get aggressively "bigger" when one feels one is right.Anderson then references Paul Tudor Jones' mentality as a path not taken for Ospraie -- managing risk tightly via "technicals," something Robertson and cubs (Anderson included) chose not to do. Is it a truly big surprise, then, that Robertson's Tiger fund ultimately went under -- Anderson's too -- while PTJ is still around?The lessons in "House of Money" are rich and varied. If you are a trader or an aspiring fund manager, you will surely get some excellent ideas from this book... or at least be reminded of some key principles worth reconsidering.For me, the sad fate of Anderson (and others) serves as a clarion call warning against hubris. I have deep respect for fundamental traders, and a personal affinity for the virtues of value investing. And yet, perhaps befitting my early trading background, I ultimately prefer to "manage risk by technicals" as Jones does.At the end of the day, it's an odds game in which information is never perfect. As with poker, you can be 80 - 90% sure, but you are very rarely 100% sure. So why not hedge? Why take on risk you don't have to? I cannot help but think that some traders (a small handful) have some mysterious and ineffable connection with risk deep down in their souls. This theory argues that the true "lovers of risk" also have the deepest respect for what risk can do.Every one of the participants interviewed by Drobny is brilliant, no doubt excellent in their own way. In that they are like soldiers sent out to battle, or grizzled poker pros making their way through a giant tournament. Some will rise and fall on the sweep of serendipity alone... the panic of 2008, in particular, will slay virtuous and wicked alike. It doesn't make sense to lament this, though; the sweep of fate is just part of the deal. Fortuna will not be denied; excellence and dedication gets you a ticket to the dance, but it in no way guarantees a share of the prize.Those who wish to compete on talent and drive alone are no doubt put off by the fickleness of fate... as are those who got lucky early in life (right parents, right schools etc.) and want to freeze the status quo in place.But I take comfort in Fortuna's whims for a reason that might seem odd to some: She makes sure that the top spots are never permanently filled, and that hungry fighters always have a chance. There are always new stars rising as old ones fall from the firmament. (And sometimes, instead of falling, the "old" stars happily retire to their memoirs and their gardens.)And finally, the enthusiasm and diverse ideas in "House" reminded me of one more key truth in regard to markets, trading and investing: It's a truly beautiful game -- one worth playing for its own sake, even in light of horror shows like late 2008. Those who love to play for the sake of the game itself will find day-to-day reward in that, above and beyond the millions won or lost.

This book consists of a series of interviews with professional (mostly) speculators who focus on global macroeconomic events. This includes countries, raw materials, world politics, etc.I like the first person voice where we actually can learn how these people think. Conclusions are not presented as facts. In fact, there are no conclusions in the book. Just views from a large number of professionals. If you are willing to spend some time thinking about what the people say, I think you can learn quite a bit. The good thing is that you can read one interview and then think. You don't need to read the whole book in one go. However, don't expect any conclusions about how the market works from this book.The book is five years old so the examples are a bit old. However, I would not worry about that at all. Naturally, some interviews are more interesting than others, but that's just life.Finally, I think the title is kind of stupid. I thought it was some second rate author who was going to go on and on about the hedge fund industry based on some narrow knowledge and that the publisher hotted up the title. The latter is probably true. Anyway, my only point is: don't let the title scare you away.There is apparently a second edition out with some 40 extra pages. I have not seen that version, but off course that is the one you should buy.
