Lessig is an authority and thought leader in open-source community. I picked the book because of his reputation. It doesn't disappoint. Fast read, easily understandable, real-life examples. Great read on the changes Lessig argues are necessary to intellectual property law to bring it into the 21st century. His arguments are somewhat loosely made; I guess to keep the book readable by a general audience and short. Even if you agree with Lessig's general position, I found, for me, he dedicated inadequate space to cover the underlying legal, cultural and historical bases. Lessig chooses instead a more populist approach. With well-argued examples he'll make a convert of you, especially if your kid is recording sampled music and putting it out there for consumption by her peers. Good Copy Bad Copy (YouTube) is a good supplement to some of Lessig's points in this book - if you want to quickly digest the remix culture. Dive deep with another book: Adrian Johns' Piracy: The Intellectual Property Wars from Gutenberg to Gates - for a history and a more impartial treatise on intellectual property and what copyright reform means.

Read this book if you seek a conceptual structure and a well reasoned perspective on what's happening (or should be happening) around copyright law and the practical application of it in this digital age. Very well done. Having read this book its clear that improvements in copyright law could improve our world and advance our culture. I didn't start this book with such an understanding. However. Don't read this book if you're seeking economic arguments and business models for businesses centered on intellectual property.More generally, I would advocate for a revised edition. Two reasons. First, as I read it, I wondered if we're really heading towards Lessig's vision and if there are more recent waypoints that illuminate progress towards (or away) from his vision. Second reason: Lessig appears to be a political person. Fine. But he unfortunately links his advocacy in the final chapter to the rather dynamic geopolitical lessons of a "failure" in Iraq ... and to our environmental(global warming) tipping point. His argument to paraphrase is that media conglomerates cannot win the copyright/sharing war for the same reason we cannot win in Iraq. Oooops. With the benefit of time it would appear that Iraq has been won using the wise application of power. So it would therefore it follow's that Warner Brothers (and the media giants will win too with their wise application of market power)? You can't make a conclusive argument and then tie it to an inconclusive parallel. His political analogies have diminished his own argument. Embarrassing. Time for a revision. (And time for the author to spend less time with politico ideologues.)But. That said. Lessig's argument around his core subject is huge and redefining and this is a worthwhile read.

As usual, Lessig presents a convincing, easy-to-understand look at the importance of rewriting our copyright laws. His focus here is to stop making teens automatically into criminals as they "remix" their culture into their own forms of art. It's true: copyright law is strangling amateur creativity, and Lessig presents a number of ways in which the law could be rewritten in such a way that the original artist (and corporation who owns the IP) and the amateur can be protected.

The amazing thing about this book is that Lessig is getting at something bigger than just the parental worries of children sharing music and videos through the internet. He is pointing out the very serious question of where our culture is now heading toward. The World Wide Web and digital technologies has changed its course, and we now need to begin an open discussion of how we, as a community of artists, lawmakers, corporations, and the viewing (and hopefully remixing) public, would like to move forward in the 21st Century. Lessig makes an excellent contribution to this primal, immediate, and ultimately eternal conversation in "Remix".

I like the accessibility of the information about intellectual property presented here. It's an interesting and educational read. I hope he writes an updated version, since laws and copyright cases are continuing to move forward.

The only weakness in this book is that it wasn't written yesterday. Its arguments are really strong. The specific examples are very interesting. It is more developed than his lectures on the topic. I am interested to know what has changed since it was published.

The author is brilliant. He should run for president or something.

This is not Conover's best work...."Newjack" about his stint as a prison guard is his best by far.But, this is a solid book. It is dated, and reading about the Aspen of the 1980s is pretty funny. Don Johnson? John Denver? Who? But, replace the names with up-to-date celebrities and his analysis of the culture of the rich is pretty much dead on, maybe moreso today than it was then. He describes the construction of a 70,000 square foot mansion, or crazy parties - and there is little different from the excesses Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco, Bernie Madoff, etc.One aspect of the book that seems less current is the "New Age" healers, etc., that populated Aspen at the time he was there. That part didn't seem to hold up very well in the present day. Also, it's the one section where Genoways is clearly judgemental - but without turning the mirror on himself. And, drugs are part of the culture, but he gives them a little more attention than they deserve (but cocaine was everywhere in the late '80s, so at the time it probably seemed very current).He does a better job of exposing his own flaws in the rest of the book, and how he gets sucked into this "lifestyle" (a relevant word in the text). He's not trying to act better than anyone, and so the reader can accept him as a reliable narrator. He has great skill with relating conversations and anecdotes, and his attention to detail is marvelous.In 2011, a reader obviously won't pick this up to learn anything current about 1993 Aspen, Colorado. But, if you read it as an "ethnography" of an insular, high-end 'culture,' I think there are still things to learn. If you have a bunch of large houses in your town, but never see the residents, this will help explain why - it's because they don't view themselves as citizens of the same place you are, and they don't want their paths to cross with yours. This book will give you a look into that world, even if it has nothing to do with where you live.Read Conover's "Newjack" or "Rolling Nowhere" first, but this is good too (I did not really care for his new "Roads of Men" book, but it has its moments as well).

Interesting commentary on a slice of society we seem to only know from the entertainment shows or gossip sections of newspapers. It should be noted that this book is dated. In over 10 years, I am sure Aspen has changed some and the main players have changed or just been replaced.The author writes well, has insightful commentary. Some reviews complain that the book jumps around and is a bunch of "mini" stories. I thought the book flowed well. The author took different jobs and moved through different circles of Aspen society, so the book had to move with him.If you ever did the "circut" of working resort jobs: beach towns in the summer and ski resorts in the winter, this book may resonate more with you than someone who has never lived in a resort town. It certainly is a society of us and them of the many sub-groups/cultures that inhabit those towns and the author captures that very well.Overall, an easy and enjoyable read, with some thought provoking passages and commentary.

Conover is expert at gate-crashing and we are so lucky that he's a great writer, too. Here, he's written about his stint as a cab driver in Aspen, but the engrossing part is his own ability to crash celebrity-only functions.It's an interesting study in the interaction of haves and have-nots, for the rich and pampered of this famed snow town NEED the hardworking waiters and drivers and maids and ski instructors and yet are often bizarrely detached from the realities of working a steady job. Conover finds ways of crossing into the world of the haves, without ever forgetting who he is.Conover doesn't show real envy for the rich and famous, but he enjoyed their parties. He's a downhill skiier and cyclist, so he certainly enjoyed the outdoorsy life there and treats a venture into a star studded party as just another nature hike worth detailing. Conover shows a kind of pity, in fact, in a brilliant little section about hanging out in a bar booth with Mick Fleetwood and friends.Who you'll meet in the vignettes and tales of Conover's observations of Aspen life: the plethora of fine-looking young ladies, the unreal mansions with their no-holds-barred parties, the spoiled nouveau riche corporate wives, movie stars and rock stars, the crotchety old guard of the small town, drunks and granola eaters, skiers and commuters from the working class lowland.It's not a gossip-fest, nor is it a boring social critique. But it's a real slice of life. And you get a little local history and politics, too. It's a fine book for anyone who is fascinated by how the other half lives.The author's own mobility, personable nature, and mutability are his true assets. He seemed to walk away from Aspen satisfied and with a desire to explore other realms. Which he does, again and again, in his brilliant books.Good gift for a ski bum, for a social climber, for anyone who admires the art of schmoozing and faking it. Could be a bit too depressing for someone who lost in an attempt to get rich and join the upper crust.

Ted Conover is one of my favorite authors. I enjoy his ability for immersing himself into whatever subject he is writing and yet managing to maintain a certain impartiality in his observations. Whiteout is no exception to this trend. In it he captures an image of the soul of this very stratified city. He presents the experiences of people from various of it's walks of life and how they interact. What emerges is a work that not only analyzes life in Aspen, but also gives the reader an opportunity for self-examination of his own life and circumstances.

Book was delivered as expected

I have read most of Conover's books, and they are well researched, usually by the author himself. Unlike some writers, he experiences his subjects personally.

Great read to get a feel for the fabric of Aspen. Not a heart pounding thriller, but an excellent introduction if you are going to spend some time here.

Not my favorite . I have read most of his books .

All parts,fuel and oil,Nascar and Pro stock histories.Core shift explained, production numbers,performance charts,OHO info and much, much more! If you think you know everything about this engine,think again.

A "must have" for any Cleveland or Ford 335 series 351C, 351M or 400 engine fan. The quality of information in this book is absolutely top notch! If you don't have this book, you are missing out on a LOT of important history of these engines.

This book has alot of good information in it.

Des Hammill adds history of the 351C to this book which has not been printed in any other book I have red. There are a few things which were over looked in his description of parts, but over all it is a well done book. I enjoyed the addition of the Pro Stock Pinto book to this book.

Great book with lots of history and specs. A must have for any Clevland owner and builder.
