Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents, by Lindsay C. Gibson

Review

“Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem…The book is impeccably clear…This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject. The soothing effect is amplified by Gibson’s caring, knowledgeable voice—it’s easy to believe her when she says, ‘I wish the very best for you.’ This book can be a source of healing for adult children of these kinds of parents—particularly for young adults. But it’s also insightful for bosses, therapists, friends, and anyone else who works with, cares for, and supports the people described in this book. Gibson’s professional background allows her to anticipate people’s emotions and reticence—and urge them gently forward.” —Foreword Magazine“Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents is written with the wisdom and heart of a seasoned therapist and the mind of a scholar who’s spent decades poring over psychological research and theory. In this book, Lindsay C. Gibson seamlessly blends this impressive body of knowledge with the real-life experiences of her clients to create a user-friendly and highly readable book. … This book is not about blame but rather about understanding oneself on a deep level and learning to heal.”—Esther Lerman Freeman, PsyD, clinical associate professor at the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine“Children cannot choose their parents. Unfortunately, many individuals grow up suffering the life-shaping adversities of having emotionally immature, neglectful parents. With wisdom and compassion, Lindsay C. Gibson enables readers to recognize and better understand these toxic relationships and to create novel, healthy paths of healing. This book provides a powerful opportunity for self-help and is a wonderful resource for therapists to recommend to clients in need.”—Thomas F. Cash, PhD, Professor Emeritus of psychology at Old Dominion University, and author of The Body Image Workbook“Lindsay C. Gibson’s insightful book offers the ‘emotionally lonely’ a step-by-step journey toward self-awareness and healing. Gibson’s revealing anecdotes, enlightening exercises, and honest insight lead the reader to a better understanding of how to connect more fully with oneself and others. This is an excellent book for anyone who feels isolated from family members and seeks to enjoy a more emotionally connected life.”—Peggy Sijswerda, editor and publisher of Tidewater Women (tidewaterwomen.com) and Tidewater Family (tidewaterfamily.com), and author of Still Life with Sierra“Lindsay C. Gibson’s Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents is an insightful and compassionate guide for anyone seeking to understand and overcome the long-term impact of growing up in an emotionally barren family. Here you will find sage advice and simple practices that will help you break free from old patterns, connect more deeply with yourself and others, and, ultimately, be the person you were always meant to be.”—Ronald J. Frederick, PhD, psychologist and author of Living Like You Mean It“Lindsay C. Gibson, a very experienced psychotherapist, wrote Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents to provide guidance to adults for self-help in resolving anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties that result from having emotionally immature parents. It is a thorough and detailed description of immature parents, children’s experience of their parenting, and methods to resolve the resulting problems. There are many useful examples from Gibson’s psychotherapy clients. The book includes helpful exercises for self-understanding. A person can use the book to develop emotional maturity and deeper relationships.”—Neill Watson, PhD, research professor and Professor Emeritus of psychology at the College of William and Mary, and clinical psychologist who does research on anxiety, depression, and psychotherapy“Based on years of reading, research, and working with patients, psychologist Lindsay C. Gibson has written an outstanding book about the multiple ways that emotionally immature parents impact the lives of their adult children. I highly recommend Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents for all readers who want to understand the parent/child dynamic. This is an uplifting book that provides hope and superb coping strategies for those who find it difficult or impossible to bond with parents who lack empathy and sensitivity. … Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents is full of wisdom that will enable you to relate to your family members and friends in the healthiest way possible—no matter what age you are—and possibly even to recognize what’s behind some of the dysfunctional exchanges depicted in the news and in popular culture.”—Robin Cutler, PhD, historian and author of A Soul on Trial“Lindsay C. Gibson’s book, Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, is filled with clinical vignettes that will resonate with adult children of emotionally immature parents. The book also offers practical advice and exercises for identifying one’s true self and avoiding the pitfalls of self-images, relationships, and fantasies that undermine one’s psychological well-being. Finally, the book provides solid guidelines for interacting with one’s emotionally immature parents in a manner that avoids painful and damaging recreations of the past. Readers will find relief from recognizing that they are not alone and that they are understood by this remarkable clinician.”—B. A. Winstead, PhD, professor of psychology at Old Dominion University and the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology, and coeditor of Psychopathology: Foundations for a Contemporary Understanding, Third Edition

This was a disappointment. It read like an outline with each heading followed by a paragraph or two that was doing little more than presenting several ways to rephrase the heading. This would work best for a simple, basic introduction to the topic. I had hoped for more substance and less repetition.

Recently, I read 3-4 books on children of narcissistic or self-absorbed parents. Each one was valuable in its own way, helping me untangle my thoughts and feelings. What I like about this book, in particular, is that is reveals the systematic nature of emotionally immature thinking, which underlies the behavior of parents, lovers, friends, and public figures. By revealing the pattern and then explaining the cause (self-protection), it allows the reader to depersonalize the behavior and the damage it has done. For the first time, I can feel "It wasn't me. It was never me. And, it's still not me." And, for the first time, I truly understand that it's a fools errand to try to make someone more emotionally mature. It's their path. I need to accept them as they are and decide how I want them in my life, if at all.Lastly, this book is very good for people whose parents weren't excessively narcissistic, who weren't controlling or grandiose in an exaggerated fashion. One's parents can be stable and kind but still deny a deep connection with their children because they can't tolerate negative feelings. This book reveals these more subtle dynamics while explaining that the fallout is anything but subtle to a child's emotional development.

There are a few negative reviews that accuse the book of being judgmental and fostering dangerous, exaggerated attitudes toward parents. I actually didn't see that at all. This book gives a name to the subtle disengagement, distance and neglect kids suffer at the hands of parents who probably do a great job of providing food, clothing, shelter and physical safety.I burst into tears reading the chapters on internalizers and how they end up dealing with this; it was like reading my life story. I'm not sure my parents were bad enough to be considered true "narcissists," and I really do believe they love me. But they fall so clearly into the "emotional parent" (my Mom) and "passive parent" (my Dad) the author describes, and it was a disastrous combo for my sense of worth. It explained their behavior right down to exact words and phrases they use, and it also explained MY behavior and some of the self-sabotaging choices I've made as an adult. I was so relieved to hear it wasn't all in my head, that there were things I could do to find real emotional connection with other people, even in my 40s!I didn't come away judging my folks, but rather with new insight on how to deal with them, and how not to waste another minute of my life trying to get through to family members who have no desire to change. I'll take my parents as they are and not expect more than they can give, but also begin holding myself accountable for good choices now that I have this new information with which to move forward. I'm so thankful I found this book- it was dead on in its specificity.

Thank you Lindsay for being born!!! I've read countless self help books by various authors over the last three decades but, still, I never got to the heart of what was causing within me a pervasive sense of sadness, loneliness and not belonging. I've lived life mostly on the outside and in a detached way. Seldom did I feel that I fully connected with others. People would say I was a very likable person but I couldn't understand why. I never knew that I was attractive until a friend told me when I was in my teens. Even then I thought why is she saying that? I often took a backseat because I didn't have the confidence to stand up and be noticed. I could give countless examples going way back to my early childhood but suffice to say that Lindsay's book is the story of my live.I'm an internalizer. My sister is and externalizer. In many ways my parents weren't mature enough to deal with my sister's temper tantrums and her destructiveness. I was always on the receiving end of my sister's evil doings but my parents blamed me for her s. They would give in to her all the time and at my expense. They had no control of her. My sister and mother were always together and my father adored my sister whilst, I was the pregnancy they didn't want. Yes, my mother told me that she tried to abort me during the first five months of her pregnancy, but in her words said, I couldn't get rid of you! So, she said, you were born and we were stuck with you like it or not. I was about seven years old at the time and didn't fully understand then what she was saying until I grew older.Mother's jealousy, envy and resentment towards me were not recognized at the time but, on reflection, I now realize how damaging it was. I reflect back to when I was 15 and the only emotion that I recall was a deep sense of loneliness which I have carried with me since. Who am I? Where do I fit in? Why do I feel flawed as a human being? Why do I not feel good enough? Never ending questions. In my loneliness I felt an ever ending sorrow that I couldn't comprehend that, is, until I read Lindsay's book. I've lived most of my life with a multitude of conflicting and confusing emotions that neither I or any therapist I've seen or other books I've read has touch the spot quite like, 'Emotionally Immature Parents'. The decades have gone by and I'm now 65... at last I understand the emotional damage done throughout my early childhood and the life long affect it has had on me. However, all the could have's, would have's and should have's won't change a thing but, there's one thing for sure and that is, for the rest of my days I'll have clarity and an inner peace that I've never had. My heart is lighter and the anger all spent... what a wonderful place to be! Thank you from the bottom of my heart Lindsay. You are and angel in disguise.

Richard Locke, the first editor of Vanity Fair, was a disaster. He was succeeded by Leo Lerman, a professional snob who dabbled in high culture at Conde Nast. And then, with the young magazine on life support, Si Newhouse annointed Tina Brown, the practically teenaged editor of London’s Tatler, “the magazine that bites the hand that reads you.” And Tina set about saving Vanity Fair.In 1987, Andy Warhol did me the favor of dying on a Sunday morning. By Wednesday, I had written 7,500 freshly reported words for New York Magazine. On Monday, my Warhol piece appeared on the cover of New York. The following week, Tina Brown took me to lunch and showed me a Helmut Newton photograph of Faye Dunaway. “Your first cover,” she said. Would I come to Vanity Fair for $70,000 a year? I was then earning $35,000; my wife, a writer, her two young children and I lived, high above our means, on Central Park West. At that restaurant it was a career effort not to hug Tina.I was a Vanity Fair contributing editor from 1987 to 1993. As a writer who could deliver a late-breaking cover story against a ridiculous deadline, I was the happy recipient of Tina’s attention. Thrilled to share a masthead with the magazine equivalent of the 1927 Yankees, I returned it. I also saw Tina’s few but surprising weaknesses. Like: limited peripheral vision. Literally: she didn’t have much awareness of someone behind her or to the side. And metaphorically: her relentless focus on the magazine and her hellacious workload sometimes blinded her to her writers’ feelings. Once, on a car phone, she killed months of my work. (That gnawed on her; a decade later, she apologized.) And she had the unfortunate tendency, not unique to her, to be disproportionately influenced by the last person she talked to; at VF, office politics was a blood sport. (Someone posted a sign in the office: “On the side we put out a magazine.”) And she tolerated and maybe enabled an epidemic of Terminal Fabulousness — like, in a morning meeting of a dozen VF heavies in a windowless inner office of a Hollywood soundstage, I was the only one not wearing sunglasses.I offer these criticisms so I don’t come off as a fanboy. The fact is, Tina Brown was a once-in-a-lifetime creative force in a business that generally rewarded dull competence. She set the bar high (“Always do the impossible thing first”), urged writers to have a big life (“Go out, go out, and bring something back, even if it’s only a cold”), and took her greatest pleasure in marking copy with a red pencil (“It’ll cut like butter.”) These days, when New York media folk tell me how hard they work, I just smile. And think, “Not compared to Tina Brown.”Her diaries are a record of her creativity, decisiveness and pluck. For those who didn’t discover her crisp prose in "The Diana Chronicles," the diaries also reveal that she is a wickedly good writer. This book is not for everyone. If you missed the ‘80s in New York or are thrilled they’re gone, you won’t love sustained coverage of big egos and big money. If the inner workings of a media machine and the name Conde Nast mean nothing to you, take a hard pass. On the other hand, she’s intimate to a degree you won’t expect on the subject of motherhood and her concern for her son, whose Asperger’s syndrome was undiagnosed for years. Her inability to be acknowledged for what she was achieving at VF — for her first four years, she was so scandalously underpaid that Hearst very nearly poached her — will remind you that economic inequity for women extends right to the top.Candid? Interesting? Consider…- Walter Mondale “would make an excellent prime minister of Norway.”- Betsy Bloomingdale “has the wind-tunnel look of a recent face-lift.”- New York Times society reporter Charlotte Curtis: “a coiffed asparagus, exuding second-rate intellectualism.”- Arianna’s husband Michael Huffington: “a tall glass of water with a weak smile.”- Amanda Burden: “a charming sparrow-faced blonde who clearly longs to be looked after.”- Swifty Lazar: “tiny and bald and hairy in the wrong places.”- Mica Ertegun “seems to have made a career out of the enigma of her marriage.”- Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne, “who I find are always a struggle.”She’s at her aspish best on Conde Nast management. Alex Liberman is “like a spider in the center of a web. Spinning and spinning and reeling you in on silken thread.” His wife Tatiana is “a barking dinosaur.” S.I. Newhouse and his brood are “a family of gerbils.”At the end of this book, she decamps to The New Yorker, which she transforms into a success that David Remnick will build on. Her beloved mother dies and she launches Talk, unwisely seduced by Harvey Weinstein’s promise of equity. Massive spending and an advertising desert after 9/11 doom that magazine. She launches The Daily Beast, another budget-buster, on the Web. And now she’s found a home in the women’s conference zone.Back at Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter, standing on her shoulders, staged a holding action for 25 years, freezing the magazine’s DNA while making a 7-figure salary, plus perks, and building his personal brand as a restaurateur and film producer. With his departure, that ends. Conde Nast told his potential replacements that they’ll have a vastly lower salary and that “they’d like them to reimagine the magazine, its digital properties and its conference business — but that the title’s budget would be shrinking.” The brave new editor, Radhika Jones, comes from the books department of the Times, which has been brutally slashing budgets for years. Translation: Conde Nast is preparing this tired title to be a smaller, less successful brand.Sic transit Gloria? Well, magazines, like all organisms, have a life cycle. Tina Brown? “Unless I’m working, I am agitated,” she writes. Does Act 3 lie ahead (or is it Act 4) for her? Never say never.

First the negative. You have to be VERY interested in the New York media world of the 1980s to truly enjoy this book. And you have to be VERY interested in the day to day detail of what it takes to edit a successful general interest magazine. When Brown took over at Vanity Fair, she was a young (about 30) happily married British media world star. Maybe because she had not yet tasted failure or personal unhappiness, she lacks any larger world view and isn't particularly reflective about the Reagan era. Whatever helps drive up circulation numbers and sell ad space is grist for her mill. The book's strength resides in Brown's smart, witty take on situations and personalities. She mixed with literary lions, celebrities and the social glitterati, and she has entertaining tales to tell. Wide open to experience and sharply observant, with a gift for the telling detail, her writing is a treat to read.

I am a regular reader for over 10 years of the exceptional Vanity Fair magazine. The best place for long stories that are of great interest. But what of before the currently retiring Gaydon Carter? This fills in the story of how Tina Brown, a young Brit, takes this "restart" magazine in the 1980s long from its 1920s glory days and completely remakes it into the success that Gaydon Carter eventually continues. Now, it is repetitive. And if name dropping is offensive to you, DON'T READ!. If continual descriptions of dinners is pretentious, DON'T READ. And I must admit that it is too slow when it leaves the magazine story and moves too much in to dinner parties. But in the end it is a very compelling read of how an underpaid Brit finally gets what is coming and really makes a name for herself in NYC. I enjoyed immensely. But it is a commitment and not without slow, dull parts. But when Warren Beatty calls you for lunch, it's worth reading why. Enjoy.

I bought this rather large volume as I saw it reviewed on TV. Even though I don't know all the various celebrities - apart from Donald Trump (and there's quite a few tasty bits of gossip about him, and his ladies, in there too) I was fascinated with Tina Brown and how she managed to bring the faltering Vanity Fair magazine back to relevance, after having put the Tatler Magazine in England back on the map. She went on to be Editor in Chief also of the New York Times, and went on to establish the Daily Beast, among other things. And was honored in her own country, England by the Queen! Could not put it down.....!

The author’s writing style and ability to capture the nuances in everyday life had me traveling alongside her with every step she took, feeling the hot breezes and tasting the tomatoes. I love her dishes and serving style. I think I shall have to buy some colorful platters!

Another excellent book by Frances Mayes. Follow up book to Under the Tuscan Sun, more details about Italy and different places that she travels to. She is not afraid to go on mini adventures across Italy and she always talks about the non commercial areas, like the hidden restuarants where all the locals go. Descriptions of the areas and food are always plentiful without going overboard.

Although I am not finished with it yet, it is more of the same wonderfully lyrical writing that I found in Under the Tuscan Sun. I am thoroughly enjoying this book, and taking my time to read it, like savoring a fine wine. If you liked Tuscan Sun, you will love this one!

Love that Frances Mayes...she writes the perfect memoir. This one is more of the "sweet life in Italy", complete with her musings about life and food and gardening. Winter reading at its finest!

I always enjoy the books Frances Mayes writes and really enjoyed this one. I had read that this book tended to have too much detail but for me it described Italy perfectly and I loved her recipes and discription of all the areas and her beautiful Bramasole grounds.

This book was not as engaging as "Under the Tuscan Sun" which was Frances Mayes first book on her experiences in Italy. I found the chapters to be way too long. I don't know why this matters, but it just struck me that way. Maybe some ideas were "over covered"? However, this book had it's own charm.I did find her discussions of meals and food to be a bit too much at times. I guess too many details that attempt to display her growing knowledge of the local cuisine, that are not useful facts to me as a reader. Also the recipes are limited for use in the average suburban home here, as the ingredients are not that common. However, this was true for Under the Tuscan sun as well. It just did not seem to be emphasized as much. Her momentary concentration on the "Mafia" in Italy, I was prepared for as I read previous reviews. Her vehemence struck me as been one that one feels when they find a flaw in a cherished item. Her illusions of Italy are ones of an idyllic place and the presence of the Mafia or anything that does not fit that, obviously struck a dissonant chord with her. She may very well be relating the opinions and attitudes of the people around her and not just her own. I find it hard to think that these opinions as a foreigner here were not influenced by the local people she deals with. Some of the comments struck me as ones only a local could perceive. What I did find a bit rude was her characterizations of some of her visitors. I certainly hope this was shared with them prior to publication. Like Ann Landers says you can't be taken advantage of if you don't allow yourself to be (or something like that). If you are looking for more on Bramasole, this book may disappoint. This book featured more of her trips beyond Cortona and even into Venice. Some people may find her self-absorption a bit over done at times, as she relates bits of her childhood and life outside of Italy. However, I found it interesting to see how the "other half" lives. I liked her way of relating her current thoughts with past actions. Like collections and family life. It is nice to get into her head. I think we all do that to some extent and when we get a glimpse of what another thinks, it shows first that we are not so weird after all, but just how different or similar another's experiences are.I guess what makes these books special to me is her way of describing the day to day surroundings as an American would see them. This I feel makes them real for me. She is going in with American expectations and when these are different she relates this. I then feel like I have been there right along with her. I wonder how a local feels when they read some of this? All in all, it was a decent follow on to Under the Tuscan sun. Not as good, but close. The couple of pictures on the dust cover and the diagrams inside helped flesh out the area she was referring to. The engagement calendar, does an even better job at that.I have bought the next book she does on her life in Italy (In Tuscany)and am about to start it. I feel she has a lot to offer as a writer. In Bella Tuscany, she experimented a bit more in her writing, with some successes and failures. I hope to see how she reacted to Bella Tuscany's impact with "In Tuscany". Also I'm looking forward to the pictures included in "In Tuscany" to further flesh out this world.

Love the visit to Tuscany which recalls wonderful memories of a brief visit there. Makes me long for a chance to experience the charming adventures of Frances and Ed. This story allows the next best thing.

Such a fabulous, leave-your-mundane-world-behind kind of read. Swept me away, AND there are recipes!

We are really happy with this book! It is what we refer to as a "mini" city book, and no, regular minifigures won't fit with it but you can build a large city in a tiny space (and I find these builds sturdier). I noticed a lot of other reviewers were complaining that there are mostly vehicle builds (I included a photo of the content page) but I think that was a smart move for the authors of the book. They included parts lists with pictures as well as step by step instructions for each build. This is already a huge book, there would need to be another book just for buildings (which would be cool). So yes, they should have titled this one "Build Your Own City Vehicles" but they do give you a couple of options for houses and buildings you could customize with different colors. So, check out the preview that amazon offers before you purchase (clicking on the "Look inside" button under the picture in the description), it's pretty accurate as to what the whole book is like. And consider using the Lego website for ordering specific bricks under the "Pick a Brick" option. It is unlikely you will have every single brick to create a lot of the builds in the book (you will find this true for most lego idea books).

It is good if you want to build little vehicles or micro buildings, but it doesn't specify that in the description. It is NOT a build a city book. I am very disappointed in the description matching the actual content. I just wasted $20.

This book should be called,"Build your own fleet of LEGO vehicles." The directions for each vehicle are very detailed, including a list of necessary parts. But the book only shows how to build two types of trees and two buildings - there's no mention of constructing streets, parks, other buildings, or that really cool Gothic church on the front of the book.So if you're looking to build vehicles, this is perfect. If you actually want to build a city, you'll need to look elsewhere.

Wish I had read the reviews beforehand, there are only two buildings in this book, the rest is filler (mostly vehicles)

In the years since my son started with Legos, we've moved a few times, he's lost all of his directions and kits have become, well, large disassembled piles of Legos. This book has helped "bring the Lego back" for our teenage son.

"The Big Unofficial Lego Builder's Book Build Your Own City" is the title of this book. What a Disappointment! Build Your Own City? Every chapter shows pictures of beautiful buildings and well designed streets and infrastructure, yet, there are plans for only two structures. All of the plans are for various vehicles for transportation and construction. There is one plan for a tree, one for a house, and one for a department store. Nothing for infrastructure in the form of roads and bridges and buildings as seen in the illustrations. Where are the plans for the beautiful train station; for the banks and courthouse? How did you apply the windows made of grates in the photo of the Karstadt building? What good are a bunch of vehicles and a train without the city to drive around in?This book should have had the title, "The Big Unofficial Lego Builder's Book Build Your Own fleet of Vehicles."

I see many people complaining that there are too many vehicles. It does have many vehicle types in the book. I have also seen people criticize that minifigs won't fit. If one if building a whole city, you would need lots of Lego and space to build it to minifig scale. Micro scale is the way to go. This is one of the first books dedicated to micro scale, and the book is great. Now about the lack of buildings? 1) How much diversity is there in the buildings in a city? If you squint the diversity is in scale, color, number of floors, types of external decoration. In this book you should be able to take the two designs and create a great many buildings from it. What really make a city a city is what the city contains and much of the actual diversity is in the vehicles you see. You get a train, dump truck, different consumer cars. You even get 2 types of trees. The book is full of beautiful color pictures, great instructions. He gives you good information regarding building at this scale. I personally can't wait for the next book from them.

I am very disappointed in my purchase. This book gives only two options for buildings, the book is about building vehicles.

OMG.....Mouth wide open after that ending. This whole installment kept me wondering what's happening next. I couldn't put it down...a page-turner. Greg, got exactly what he deserved, since he thought he was making all these babies and having sister wives....jokes on him. Now, I'm going to need Sade to grow a backbone and stand up for herself. I'm sick of Giselle delusional behind, she needs a beat down like Monica got. Poor City can't catch a break, the snakes are definitely after him... Rigs, Lucas and I know Marcus is up to something also. I sure hope Guwop don't fall for Lucas lies as he try to set up City. This book was well written and held my attention to the very end and I still wanted more. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds in the next installment. Amazing job Sephiri J.

Summer was looking for a come up and she found it with Greg punk a$$. Sade was so geeked she must have forgot she had sex with Guwop. Bo is supposed to ride for City no matter what. Giselle think she got Bo beat . Lucas is a mfer s#^t starter. I would like to think if City had a problem with Guwop he would he have a face to face not taking the word from a third party or a reordering. Bo should have told Dontrelle to kick rocks and her big sister is a messy mfer tattle tell with her hatin a$$. I would hate it if Lucas setup Guwop. Bo's mama and sister need to get some business of their own. Michael needs to turn Sandra over the the police that would hurt Rigs more than finding out him and Lucas are butt buddies. Impatiently waiting for part 3.

Okay, let me just say this part of the series took me to the level of popping an extra blood pressure pill because Lawd ham mercy this part had so much action I had to stop..... catch my breath and take notes!!! Giselle needs to move on, Greg been played with his community of sister wives, G about to be a baby daddy if he doesn't fall for the old okie dokie and poor City ya got more issues than I got back teeth!!! I need part three like NOW!!! This was so good I sped through this book in no time and definitely craved for MORE!!!

Greg finally got a taste of his own medicine all his cheating backfired in his face. Sade has to tell Guwop he is going to be a daddy. I hope Lucas plan backfires and Guwop doesn't fall for the setup knowing City wouldn't betray him. Bo needs to grow up she let Giselle play her costing her City. Hurry up part 3#

I'm really enjoying this series and hope pt 3 comes out soon. Sade.....smh I'm glad she's pregnant by Gwuop and hope she gives him a chance. I hope Riggs & Lucas plan fails. Giselle needs to be put 6ft under for the stalkerish stuff she pulling. I hope Bo can see through the bs and not do anything stupid before City finds out the truth to reveal to her. But since she broke I know she gone run back to her parents and Dee....her mistake though.

I love this series!!! OMG!!! It just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for Rigs and Lucas to be exposed. I love City and Bo together!!! I need them to get it together. That ending was everything!!! I pretty much expected it b/c Greg was going hard about Sade being the one with the problems of conceiving. I just had a feeling the baby mama was playing him. I just need Sade to her happy ending with Guwuop!!!! Can't wait for part 3!!!!!!!

This book was great. I read it all in 1 sitting. I didn't want to do anything else. Everything flows well. There was not any grammar errors that I noticed. I can't wait to see what happens next. I can't believe No mom. I hope City finds out about the set ups. I'm happy for Sade. I bet Greg is sorry now. Read this you will not want to put it down. I can't wait for part 3

This series is killing me! I saw that coming too...Guwop!! Sade was moving real stupid too. She better fond her backbone wherever she lost it...smh. And that other mess...nevermind let me not spoil. Just part 3 soon, please & thank you with a cherry on top? Loving your work, author. You got a fan in me!

This book was a hoot. I have to smile at some of the negative reviews of it, as those reviewers must not have read the intro where the author said, "It's a parody." And her potty mouth didn't give me those pearl clutching moments they seem to have given a few sensitive readers. After all, look at the title of the book. That should give you your first clue. The underlying message is that no, you do not have to give away Grandma's framed crewel work instead of hanging it so you can have the proper percentage of "negative space" on your walls. It's okay to hold on to that super soft and comfy t-shirt you've had for five years. A coffee table can hold your favorite book or books (and it's okay to own ACTUAL books in real bookshelves, and stacked when you run out of room), your coffee, the TV guide and anything else you want to have there. Souvenir mugs from places you visited are not the spawn of the devil, and you can paint your walls any color you damned well please. Your children can grow up to be well-adjusted people even if they don't have their very own cubby by the door. Display your kids' or grandkids' artwork on the fridge proudly. You do not have to clean out your six by six inch purse every night. The author is trying to make the point that the movement toward white-on-white-on-white walls, naked of anything but some lonely piece of abstract something or other you have been told is art, and a clothes closet with six hangers and two pairs of shoes in it has come about not because there are tens of thousands of people clamoring to know how and whether it's okay to ditch their stuff (the landfills answer those questions), but because there is an industry that needs your money to fund its books, how-to shows, "scientific" studies and "experts" who, for a hefty fee, will come tell you how to design the very most intimate and personal spaces of all - your home.I loved it.

I loved this book. It was recommended to me by a friend who really enjoyed it. McCartney has a way of writing that feels like you are listening to your most hilarious friend rant and tell you stories and you wish she would just keep cracking you up all night. The way she writes just feels effortless and natural. I don't have a problem with the language -- I mean, look at the title. Anyone who is pearl-clutching over "bad words" needs to reassess. I also felt completely validated because try as I might, I cannot keep anything organized. This book tells the reader why that is not only okay, but preferable. It's not some self-help nonsense. It IS a very funny book that manages to sneak some keen insights in while providing an escape from a world that makes less and less sense. This is the perfect book for summer. Every single person I've recommended it to has loved it, too. I say read it and join the FREE Movement!

Ok, so I don't know where the 1 star folks are coming from. Yes, there are swear words. But they are HILARIOUS. Don't take yourself so seriously. What did you think you were going to get from a book called the joy of leaving your sht all over the place? This book is a great reminder to be your authentic self. It's easy to get caught up in self help bs, but in the end - ain't nobody got time for that. You do you.

Great, fun, simple read. I bought its anti-thesis - by Marie Kondo, The Art of Tidying Up (something like that title...). I am somewhere in the middle of those two mindsets! I am now lending it to my messy friends and they love it!

Love the tone and message of this book. We all take ourselves too seriously!

Bought this for my 18 year old daughter who hates to read. I thought she'd laugh at the premise, but then give the book away without reading it. Much to my surprise however, she devoured this book. Afterwards she admitted: "okay, I admit that was a great book." So glad I bought it for her, and that she loved it. Now, if she'd only clean her room ....

hysterical! This book is hilarious even though I fall into the category of people who enjoy a very neat and tidy home! It's a fun and funny reminder not to take life so seriously. The cat references are hysterical!

Personally, I'm working on the Swedish death cleaning to deal with clutter. I bought the book for my husband who is a confirmed packrat, bordering on being a hoarder. So far, he hasn't read the book. I found this book a lot of fun to read and I agree with other posters, it is laugh out loud hysterical. I think I'd like Jennifer for a friend. Sometimes opposites do attract and we could all use more friends.

A Time of Gifts: On Foot to Constantinople: From the Hook of Holland to the Middle Danube (New York Review Books Classics), by Patrick Leigh Fermor

Review

"This is a glorious feast, the account of a walk in 1934 from the Hook of Holland to what was then Constantinople. The 18-year-old Fermor began by sleeping in barns but, after meeting some landowners early on, got occasional introductions to castles. So he experienced life from both sides, and with all the senses, absorbing everything: flora and fauna, art and architecture, geography, clothing, music, foods, religions, languages. Writing the book decades after the fact, in a baroque style that is always rigorous, never flowery, he was able to inject historical depth while still retaining the feeling of boyish enthusiasm and boundless curiosity. This is the first of a still uncompleted trilogy; the second volume, Between the Woods and the Water, takes him through Hungary and Romania; together they capture better than any books I know the remedial, intoxicating joy of travel." — Thomas Swick, South Florida Sun-Sentinel “Recovers the innocence and the excitement of youth, when everything was possible and the world seemed luminescent with promise. ...Even more magical...through Hungary, its lost province of Transylvania, and into Romania... sampling the tail end of a languid, urbane and anglophile way of life that would soon be swept away forever.” —Jeremy Lewis, Literary Review“A book so good you resent finishing it.” —Norman Stone "The greatest of living travel writers…an amazingly complex and subtle evocation of a place that is no more." — Jan Morris "In these two volumes of extraordinary lyrical beauty and discursive, staggering erudition, Leigh Fermor recounted his first great excursion… They’re partially about an older author’s encounter with his young self, but they’re mostly an evocation of a lost Mitteleuropa of wild horses and dark forests, of ancient synagogues and vivacious Jewish coffeehouses, of Hussars and Uhlans, and of high-spirited and deeply eccentric patricians with vast libraries (such as the Transylvanian count who was a famous entomologist specializing in Far Eastern moths and who spoke perfect English, though with a heavy Scottish accent, thanks to his Highland nanny). These books amply display Leigh Fermor’s keen eye and preternatural ear for languages, but what sets them apart, besides the utterly engaging persona of their narrator, is his historical imagination and intricate sense of historical linkage…Few writers are as alive to the persistence of the past (he’s ever alert to the historical forces that account for the shifts in custom, language, architecture, and costume that he discerns), and I’ve read none who are so sensitive to the layers of invasion that define the part of Europe he depicts here. The unusual vantage point of these books lends them great poignancy, for we and the author know what the youthful Leigh Fermor cannot: that the war will tear the scenery and shatter the buildings he evokes; that German and Soviet occupation will uproot the beguiling world of those Tolstoyan nobles; and that in fact very few people who became his friends on this marvelous and sunny journey will survive the coming catastrophe." — Benjamin Schwarz, The AtlanticPraise for Patrick Leigh Fermor: "One of the greatest travel writers of all time”–The Sunday Times “A unique mixture of hero, historian, traveler and writer; the last and the greatest of a generation whose like we won't see again.”–Geographical “The finest traveling companion we could ever have . . . His head is stocked with enough cultural lore and poetic fancy to make every league an adventure.” –Evening StandardIf all Europe were laid waste tomorrow, one might do worse than attempt to recreate it, or at least to preserve some sense of historical splendor and variety, by immersing oneself in the travel books of Patrick Leigh Fermor.”—Ben Downing, The Paris Review

About the Author

Patrick Leigh Fermor (1915-2011) was an intrepid traveler, a heroic soldier, and a writer with a unique prose style. After his stormy schooldays, followed by the walk across Europe to Constantinople that begins in A Time of Gifts (1977) and continues through Between the Woods and the Water (1986), he lived and traveled in the Balkans and the Greek Archipelago. His books Mani (1958) and Roumeli (1966) attest to his deep interest in languages and remote places. In the Second World War he joined the Irish Guards, became a liaison officer in Albania, and fought in Greece and Crete. He was awarded the DSO and OBE. He lived partly in Greece—in the house he designed with his wife, Joan, in an olive grove in the Mani—and partly in Worcestershire. He was knighted in 2004 for his services to literature and to British–Greek relations. Jan Morris was born in 1926, is Anglo-Welsh, and lives in Wales. She has written some forty books, including the Pax Britannica trilogy about the British Empire; studies of Wales, Spain, Venice, Oxford, Manhattan, Sydney, Hong Kong, and Trieste; six volumes of collected travel essays; two memoirs; two capricious biographies; and a couple of novels—but she defines her entire oeuvre as “disguised autobiography.” She is an honorary D.Litt. of the University of Wales and a Commander of the British Empire. Her memoir Conundrum is available as a New York Review Book Classic.

What would you do if you were a bright and sensitive 18-year-old Englishman, a boy really, whose parents just had a very messy separation and, though very intelligent, you had not done very well at any of your schools? And life seemed pointless and depressing? Why, walk across Europe to Constantinople naturally, and write three marvelous best-sellers about the journey while you were about it. And, oh yes, let’s say the year is 1933 and all Europe is convulsed politically by a life-or-death struggle between communism and fascism, and the Nazis are just coming into ruthless and total power in Germany. That would make it much more interesting. You would want to put a copy of The Oxford Book of English Verse and Horace’s Odes in your rucksack for company, of course, and you would want your parents to give you one pound a week for spending money, that would be more than enough. And that is what these three amazing books are about. Fermor is an unusually keen observer, and his vivaciousness and immensely likeable personality combine with his brilliant observational power to create this compelling personal odyssey. The first volume carries Fermor from the Hook of Holland through fascist Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia; the second takes him through Hungary and Transylvania; and the third winds through Rumania and Bulgaria and ends up with him being deposited in Greece, where the hair-raising wartime adventures he later became famous for were to occur. He sleeps rough in the country sometimes, sometimes in the fantastic castles of middle Europe, sometimes in barns with bucolic peasants. But everywhere he is observing, and writing everything down compulsively in battered notebooks. The detailed notebooks from this amazing journey became the wellspring of the three beloved classics, but how this voyage became the three books is a great story in itself. His first notebook was stolen and lost forever in Munich in the first volume, a minor disaster. But then a major disaster happened in the third volume: his rucksack was stolen in Rustchuk, a Bulgarian town on the Danube, and ten months of notes were lost. Miraculously, however, the rucksack and the notes were recovered and they were ultimately put away for safe-keeping during the war at Harrod’s where they were later destroyed, unclaimed. And that was the end of the notebooks. Then life intervened: World War II and a brilliant literary career that carried Fermor into the first rank of English writers of the 20th Century. Then, late in a long and well-lived life, the accomplished author returned to his memories, without the benefit of contemporary notes, to see if he could make something of his unaided recollections. The books themselves were written when the wandering boy had become an old man, a great writer at the height of his powers. The first volume came out in 1977 when I was at Oxford, but somehow I completely missed them until now, to my great loss. The second volume appeared in 1986. Both attracted universal critical acclaim, and the world waited patiently for the concluding volume. But Fermor died in 2011 with the trilogy incomplete. In 2013, it was finished and lightly edited by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper and, although the third volume is not quite as brilliant as the first two, it is extremely well done and eminently readable. It beautifully completes this remarkable saga.Undertaking this journey today would be most unwise. To do it in 1933 at the age of 18 seems positively insane. What Fermor saw is now a completely vanished world, of course. Imagine walking across Europe at that young age and in that time, walking across Germany just as the Nazi terror was coming to power, strolling observantly through a wonderful world that was about to vanish forever, in flame and death. The elderly author sees sensitively through the eyes of the young traveler, and the reader is keenly aware of having the benefit of both perspectives. The young Fermor observes the charming folk traditions of the gypsies of Bulgaria, and the reader knows they will all surely be liquidated in the coming fascist occupation. There is a bitterly poignant air that hangs over this trilogy -- of aching beauty, doom and death, love and loss, an irrepressible zest for living overshadowed by the reader’s knowledge of what was about to befall these beautiful countries and these lovely people.I am enchanted by the reveries he invokes and how in these books you can hear both voices, see both points of view, read the one writer enthusing about a wonderful experience while understanding it is being told by another writer who knows all of that world vanished forever in an evil conflagration. So you get both points of view, one feelingly perceived by an adventurous boy and the other well crafted by a gifted older man, both writing about a beautiful and bucolic world the boy perceived and from the perspective of the older man who knew it was a doomed world. Enthralling.

The whole trilogy is excellent reading and stimulated my wife's interest in a recent trip along the same path, albeit with trains, buses and cars rather than his shoe leather express. In one paragraph, he can encompass a thousand years of tribal movements in Hungary and Austria leaving the reader informed, entertained and breathless. His description of Munich beer hall patrons and their gluttony is very funny. His experiences sharing shelter and meals with shepherds, loggers, intellects and nobles illuminate the narrative, as he describes the physical landscape and the simultaneous stability and changeability of old Mittel-Europa two generations after the unification of German states and twenty years after the death and dissolution of the Austrian Empire. He set out on his adventures as Hitler became chancellor, a few years before full fruition of the deluded, evil, incestuous coupling of people and politicians with their fascist and bolshevik states. We especially enjoyed his frequent historical references to Imperial Roman activity in the region.

I feel bad giving this book two stars since the content, and talent and intellectual gifts of the writer are exceptional. When Fermor takes a break from one of his too often and mammoth literary, art, historical, architectural tangents and shares his unique experiences with the reader, the book is lovely. I wish there was a version of this book that left out his hard-to-follow verbal wanderings and focused instead on his charming stories. Normally I would enjoy learning all about the new history and literature he places before me but he is an awful teacher. Fermor likes to launch into detailed and highly educated references with little to no background. If you happen to be educated in all the things Fermor is, then you’ll probably be happy with this book. I am going to try to make my way through the second book as I have heard that the third book is far more readable (two other writers completed it after his death).

This is a wonderful book of many layers, a reflection in late middle age about a walking tour the author took as a young man. The prose is rich and gorgeous, the descriptions evocative, and the stories amusing and often enlightening. Eve though Leigh Fermor begins by explaining that he was thrown out of several schools before giving up on formal education, he had an impressive command of history, art, geography, classical literature and the English language.I particularly liked the descriptions of ordinary Europeans and their concerns in the years before Hitler was elected. Leigh Femor later became a war hero, and in looking back he manages to convey simultaneously the innocence of his own youth and a strong sense of what was already brewing. My only disappointment was that the tale ends without warning. Fortunately, there are two more parts.
