Other reviews here will give you an idea of the basics of this book. It is quite worthwhile if you have an interest in 1) the variety of the basic Taoist texts (the primary text 'Cultivating Stillness', written under the name of Lao Tzu but more likely by a later, anonymous follower of Lao Tzu, is a wonderful almost poetic take on the nature of the Tao), or 2) information on Taoist alchemy (Wong's introduction does a good job of interpreting alchemical symbolism/metaphor). I would specifically point out a few things, however. Most of the book is taken up by a commentary by Shui-ch'ing Tzu (likely written somewhere between 1644-1911 CE.). Shui-ch'ing has some very idiosyncratic views on the text, and writes from what I would call an overt sectarian standpoint. He constantly attacks those who don't see the text his way and promulgates a harsh, puritanistic practice ("You must isolate your body from fame, fortune, possessive love, liquor, sexual pleasure, and emotions. You must cut them off with a sharp knife" p. 90). He also believes in the inner gods, beings who supposedly live in our bodies and report our sins back to "the Jade emperor" (p. 48 e.g.), even though such notions were long eschewed in other mystical Taoist texts centuries before. In discussing section 16, which quotes Lao Tzu: "The honorable ones have nothing to argue. The dishonorable ones like to argue" -- Shui-ch'ing then follows by launching into a rant where he, indeed, argues on and on about religion and behavior. This happens again with section 17. Well, I could continue pointing out Shui-ch'ing's hypocrisy and rather irritating tone, but the bigger issue here is Eva Wong's choice of commentator. As she notes, several commentaries on 'Cultivating Stillness' exist, so why this is the one she chose, frankly says something about her own point of view. While her translation is very well done, and she is eminently knowledgeable about Taoism, she herself plainly comes at it from the point of view of one invested in a particular aspect of religious practice. She claims in her introduction that her "own understanding of many passages in this text was a result of the experience of changes within [her] body" and pays homage to her personal teacher for this (p. xxvi). One certainly can't deny her claim, but without such knowledge ourselves, and without access to an alternative view of this material, we're left at the mercy of highly religious people. Don't get me wrong, it is worth buying this book (you just have to read between the lines a bit and take the commentary with a grain of salt, and again there's much basic information here that can fill in a lot of gaps for you), but you have to deal with the perspectives of the translator and commentator. I would get this, but make sure you balance it out with other books by, say, Thomas Cleary and Fabrizio Pregadio.

Cultivating Stillness is a text from the Taoist canon. Its Chinese name is the T'ai Shang Ch'in-ching Ching. Cultivating stillness is a short text of twenty-four segments. An exoteric interpretation will produce a reading of Taoism that focuses on the ideas of wu-wei, simplicity, and peaceful and harmonious living. An esoeric interpretation will reveal hidden instructions on internal alchemy and meditation, nd will offer advice on a lifestyle that is conducive to the cultivation of health and longevity.Taoist methods of health, longevity, and immortality were often presented in the esoteric terminology of alchemy, which was intended both to reveal and to hide. To those initiated in the practice, the symbolism revealed a world of inner experience. I did prefer this book's straightforward formatting to the previous book. But . . .in my opinion, portions of the book are not age appropriate and overly graphic. I could MAYBE see giving this book to a 14 year-old child who is about to enter high school. However, there were a couple of issues I had with this book that really turned me away from it. The constant references to sexual activity being "pleasurable" and "feeling good" were a bit too much for my taste..And it is a running theme throughout this and the preceding book in the series. For example, this book discusses orgasm and both couples bodies "trembling." For an 11 year-old? Really? There are also detailed discussions on breast size (is bigger better?), oral sex, and incest. You be the judge. I am returning it in search for something a little less descriptive for an 11/12 year-old, where the authors aren't discussing "pleasure" on every other page. (Geez, enough already - I get it, but you go overboard and then you tell them to wait?)

I appreciate the effort. However, as my husband put it, this is somewhat like pornography for children. I purchased two of the books in the series, and found the material to be inappropriate, and at times too graphic. My teens do not need a description of oral sex, in order to know that it constitutes sexual intimacy outside of marriage. And my 10 year old does not need to know that an adult (pedophile) derives pleasure from touching a child's genitalia. Teaching children healthy physical boundaries should be the emphasis, without disturbing them.

I have all 4 books (The Story of Me, Before I Was Born, What's the Big Deal, and Facing the Facts) I have a 12, 10, and 5 year old. I have read books 1 & 2 to all 3 children. I gave my older child book 3 to read himself and will give him book 4 when I feel he is ready. I like knowing I am giving them the tools they need to live in this world. I looked through many books before deciding on this set. I am happy with these 4 books and recommend them if you are looking for information based on Christian beliefs.

Great book and was recommend by pastor. I would read it first and leave some stuff out depending on how mature your child is. Fantastic book an uses scripture and science.

GREAT Christian-based series of books to teach the "facts of life" to children in an informative, non-intimidating way.

So thankful for this book. I bought this one and the level below it as well. It explains things in a way a child can understand without making it awkward for the both the child and parent. My favorite part is that it includes why waiting is so important. And why God cares about it.

My son was getting very curious and this book satisfied all of his questions when I sat down and had "the talk" with him.

I like Jane Yolen's stories, and have always considered her prose to be rather lyrical, but certainly had never read one of her stories written in a poetic form. I loved it - both the retelling of a Baba Yaga tale, and it being written as a series of poems. I also think the modern retelling is likely very accessible to a modern, younger audience. Highly recommended!

I've never read much about Baba Yaga or a novel written in verse for that matter. I found it to be an easy and entertaining read, and found the relationship between the titular witch and main character moving.

A delight. The poetic images are clear and the emotions understandable. While I'm not a great fan of verse as a medium of expression this little book was a page turner for me. Many of the individual poems as so concisely done and universal in feeling and application that they beg to read aloud.

Told through prose, Yolen uses the symbolism from the traditional Russian archetype of Baba Yaga.

I expected a book, not a short story.

A fun format to deeply explore traditional folktales and age-old challenges.

Wow! I've never read books in verse, and I normally don't even like poetry, but this one definitely packs a punch! I loved it.The feminist themes of a girl without her place, mixed with hints of mythology and the general woman-witch archetype was amazing. This is a fast read, and you don't know quite what to make of it, but you know the feeling is good.Finding Baba Yaga hints at many things - abusive or restricting, over-religious parents, lack of freedom to choose even your own thoughts or words, leaving home and finding a new life for yourself, loss, jealousy, disappointment, love. Finding an odd companion, becoming a family to someone who is nothing and nobody to you. And eventually finding your roots somewhere you would have never dreamed of finding them.The poems are strong, they talk about the importance of words and stories. But they're not pretentious or hard to understand at all - it's pretty straightforward, and yet, it still has these little plays on words that you can choose to interpret the way you like. I liked both the symbolism and the simplicity of this book, and I'm sure I'll be reading it again.I thank Tor.com for sending me a review copy on exchange to my honest opinion. These nonfiction readers have a main sight word for each book. I bought them to use with my 1st grade class. The pictures and topics are overall interesting and engaging. After buying this set, I ended up getting other ones at the different levels (so far I have found levels A-D books). You get 25 small books in each set, a plus, since some sets come with less or have repeat titles. The book bindings are stitched, but I knew that going in, so it wasn't a detractor.

This set of books is wonderful if your child has to master the Fry sight word list for Kindergarten! There's one book for each word and all of the books are about engaging science and social studies topics. These books were very helpful with practicing reading with my son. We purchased levels C and D as well and also enjoyed them. Would love a set for first grade words!

I just got these and i wanted to add photos for other people to see. I can’t fairy review it yet until I try themI recently used BOB books level 1 and my 5 year old found them super boring and complained every time. However- he did learn to read a bunch of words but he also memorized the stories so i dunno how helpful that was. Bob books also made no sense and I think these new books might be more interesting.I wanted to try a new company’s books to see if he’d find them more interesting.This comes with 25 booksAll in full color and photosComes with a workbook as well (same size as the rest of the books)Comes with 12 stickersSome pages are duplicate in the SHE book.The stories are very repetitive and only a few words change from page to page- this allows my son to remember most of the sentence. Not sure if this is good or bad. But so far my son enjoys reading these books.I also like the interactive books that have you count things, tell what time is on the clock, or spot the triangles.UPDATE: i’ve been reading these with my son for about 2 weeks now and he really enjoys these. When i show him BOB books he literally yells NOOOO 😂. My son has improved a lot in the last 2 weeks. He’s retaining a lot of sight words and is reading 4 and 5 letter words now which is amazing.

Perfect set for my grandson who will be going into the first grade this fall. He was tired of the "Bob Books" so when he picked this set out he was happy. They are great using photographic books to help him with his sight words & reading confidence. We are pleased with the purchase. After 2 weeks he is re-reading the entire series again and enjoying them still. It was a great purchase for him.

Great books! I bought these for a book drive my work was hosting for an elementary school we sponsor! Once everyone at work saw these books, they purchased some for their own children! I will be getting these for my grandson in the very near future!!

These nonfiction sight word readers repeat the sight word of focus on every page, and have simple, repetitive sentences I bought them to use with my beginning readers (kids who are just starting to read words). The pictures and topics are engaging. I would recommend this series to teachers and parents who are looking for good books to support reading practice.

Great little books for beginning readers. The are short enough to read several a day which gives a sense of accomplishment. The pictures are bright and colorful and very helpful to enable children to decode non sight words. I have the entire set and I highly recommend them!

Good readers for my Kindergarten twins (one has been on Level D for a while and one just passed to Level D). The stories are fun and keep the kids engaged. The sight word being featured is BOLD on every page to help them recognize it. These books have helped my kids tremendously learn to read. They read these. or similar ones in school, so it is good to keep the reading material consistent at home.

It tells the story of a near outbreak in the U.S.This was a quick read for me over the summer and gave me a fairly decent education regarding this deadly, and scary virus and how it likely jumped species from monkey to human by (spoiler) monkey markets and the greedy mishandling of the animals in the research market. There have been areas in Africa where villages have been devastated by Ebola and it's three different strains.This book is creepy as it explains how the military handles the research of such virus's in it's Level Four research labs, where the handlers need no vaccinations when studying, because there are no vaccines. The researchers wear spacesuits and go through different levels before they can enter the area for researching such viruses as Ebola-a hole in your glove could mean certain death; you'd also be sent to a hospital where you'd have no chance to infect others - you'd die alone, a most grisly death too, as you'll read in the descriptions of people who died of Ebola.Of special interest is the story of the spread of Ebola in Africa before it became a known virus.Scary Non-fiction told in the author's usual riveting style.

Do I say "Research?" It is due to the fact that I am writing a fictional 'zombie' book for NaNoWriMo that I picked up the Kindle and Audible versions of this book. My zombies are merely sick people. I am not a medical person so I needed some input on how it all starts and how contagious it all is. As it turns out it isn't as bad as Ebola, but the gore of my book might evolve due to this book.Meanwhile, this is a book I put off for decades. I remember a guy named Jason at the school I worked at that came up to me with the paperback. He was so excited about it. But the more he talked the squirmier I got. "And it's a true story!" He exclaimed. I started watching shows like Outbreak. We saw it in the theater. Remember that sneeze? I nearly ran out of there when someone coughed.I grew--good or bad, I guess that's for others to judge. But lately, I can watch a disaster movie, or The Walking Dead and notice only the social reaction to the monsters or the disease or the overwhelming snow. So I thought I could now face this book.Reading happens at bedtime. Bet you can guess how this book blended into dreams. And since I listened as I read the Kindle with the Audible, that voice! Richard M. Davidson's voice. What a deep bass and excellent for the genre! Creepy and authoritative! Wow!What I learned is that my characters in my book were dressed properly to deal with their strains of disease. And I learned I never want to be anywhere near someone coughing! If I was a germaphobe before... well, let's just say there isn't enough hand sanitizer in the world for me!Knowing this is nonfiction made this even more frightening. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago there was an Ebola scare. What a horrid disease! And this author did a poetic job of helping the reader to see it and feel it. If you haven't read it yet, climb out of your hiding place and give it a try. Forewarned is forearmed as they say. Might as well get the Audible version to make it even more real. I will try to read more of his books now. Time for more vitamin C and Airborne!

I missed this book altogether when it first was published, but I did see it around the house. One of my sons read it, and told me the other day the book helped him decide on a career in medicine -- he's now in his sixth year of an M.D.-Ph.D. program . He told me this the other day when we were talking Ebola. So I decided to read it. Wow!Preston is a good storyteller, and he recounts the appearance of Ebola in suburban Washington as though this real-life event were a thriller, as, indeed, it turned out to be. I've read that Preston plans a new edition of the book, to correct what might be some overstatements in the course of an Ebola infection. I also wonder whether he will address the belief expressed in the Hot Zone that Ebola can be spread by airborne means.On the legal side, Preston has a good understanding of the law's inherent conservatism. When military brass was trying to decide how best to confine the outbreak of Ebola at a facility housing research monkeys, the officers conclude that it is best to act first, before seeking legal advice. Once they acted, the lawyers could always defend the emergency measures taken as legal. I chuckled when I read that, recognizing the inherent conservatism of a lawyer's advice.I enjoyed this book immensely. It gives insight into medical research, public health and military preparedness for a biohazard disaster. Surprisingly, it appears we don't know much more about Ebola than what we knew in 1995, when this book was published -- except that the virus still lives and is still capable of enormous destruction.

He carefully connects the main players as their paths cross again and again, their lives altered by this unseen, unclean thing, the filovirus (Ebola) sisters.One cannot help but to realize how at risk we humans are that a virus hidden deep in the jungles of Africa could hop-scotch around the world in a day, traveling incognito inside its naive host. Ebola is even now on the Tarmac at an African airport, waiting in silence, undetected. We skim the headlines on the internet and give it a mental shrug, Sudan, it's a long ways away but this is happening, right now!Oh, the FIFTH-STAR is for Amazon's WhisperSynch (audio enhanced Kindle books). Love it, makes reading and listening to audiobook into one; no time lost while driving, pick up reading back at home. Just open the iPad Kindle app and it knows automatically where it left off on the iPhone, driving in from Lubbock. Sorry, the Kindle reader still doesn't do it for me and neither does the PaperWhite connect with WhisperSynch. Hillbilly
