Disclaimer: I will not talk about the recipes themselves as we haven't cooked one yet. I got this as a Christmas gift to my husband as it a beautiful object first. There are so many cookbooks out there, you might as well gift a pretty one. When I went through the pages I saw almost all of the recipes had images which I know is important for the person the gift was intended to. I also loved the fact that it features farms from the NY state, and that some of the recipes were around products we don't find commonly in American cookbooks like foie gras. Great buy!

I bought this instead of his Eleven Madison Park cookbook. Glad I did. It compliments my New York cookbook that I bought years ago. Quite an undertaking, but glad to read it through the eyes of Daniel Humm. As it is will be used more of a coffee table book, I wouldn't pay full price for it. Glad I bought it heavily discounted from a second seller.

Love it

From the same great minds of 11 Madison, this book is so intelligently laid out and beautifully photographed that it makes everything look easy. The recipes are not trivial, but anyone who loves to cook can accomplish them. You may need some odd ingredients, but none of the usage is particularly esoteric. Like all high-intensity food, you need to read and understand the recipe before starting, but these are all very rewarding (you won't need a whole brigade like the Alinea or 11 Madison books).

Love this book, the recipes and the history of the food in NY.

ok

Really good Recipes

Ishmael:A Novel, by Daniel Quinn

From Kirkus Reviews

Here's the novel that, out of 2500 submissions, won the ecological-minded Turner Tomorrow Award--and caused a mutiny among the judges when it was awarded the $500,000 first prize. Is it that good--or bad? No, but it's certainly unusual, even eccentric, enough to place Quinn (the paperback Dreamer, 1988) on the cult literary map. What's most unusual is that this novel scarcely is one: beneath a thin narrative glaze, it's really a series of Socratic dialogues between man and ape, with the ape as Socrates. The nameless man, who narrates, answers a newspaper ad (``TEACHER seeks pupil...'') that takes him to a shabby office tenanted by a giant gorilla; lo! the ape begins to talk to him telepathically (Quinn's failure to explain this ability is typical of his approach: idea supersedes story). Over several days, the ape, Ishmael, as gruff as his Greek model, drags the man into a new understanding of humanity's place in the world. In a nutshell, Ishmael argues that humanity has evolved two ways of living: There are the ``Leavers,'' or hunter-gatherers (e.g., Bushmen), who live in harmony with the rest of life; and there are the ``Takers'' (our civilization), who arose with the agricultural revolution, aim to conquer the rest of life, and are destroying it in the process. Takers, Ishmael says, have woven a ``story'' to rationalize their conquest; central to this story is the idea that humanity is flawed--e.g., as told in the Bible. But not so, Ishmael proclaims; only the Taker way is flawed: Leavers offer a method for living well in the world ... A washout as a story, with zero emotional punch; but of substantial intellectual appeal as the extensive Q&A passages (despite their wild generalities and smug self-assurance) invariably challenge and provoke: both Socrates and King Kong might be pleased. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review

“A thoughtful, fearlessly low-key novel about the role of our species on the planet . . . laid out for us with an originality and a clarity that few would deny.”—The New York Times Book Review“[Quinn entraps] us in the dialogue itself, in the sweet and terrible lucidity of Ishmael’s analysis of the human condition. . . . It was surely for this deep, clear persuasiveness of argument that Ishmael was given its huge prize.”—The Washington Post“It is as suspenseful, inventive, and socially urgent as any fiction or nonfiction book you are likely to read this or any other year.”—The Austin Chronicle“Deserves high marks as a serious—and all too rare—effort that is unflinchingly engaged with fundamental life-and-death concerns.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

THIS IS A WARNING REVIEW:Twice this week I have ordered this to get the 25th Anniversary edition and twice now I am having to process a return. The book deserves all the praise you will read on it. There's nothing knew I can add to why it deserves high praise. That is why 5 stars.BUT, if you want the new edition with the extra content, you won't get what is advertised here, at least not right now (regardless of what an Amazon agent tells you, as I learned the hard way just now). The old edition is great, so if you don't mind getting that version, then all is fine.Amazon had promised on on the first order this was a rare mistake and the new stock was up and that if I ordered again, I would get what is being advertised here. So this is a heads up for those buying another copy of this book to get the new edition. They are not sending the edition you see advertised here. The photo you see is from the second order this week, which was supposed to be a replacement for the first order that sent me the wrong edition and I was told would the error would not repeat if I ordered again.

This fascinating novel consists almost entirely in a telepathic Platonic-like dialog between a non-human (a gorilla) who plays the role of Socrates and his pupil, who is the narrator of the story. The gorilla criticizes the human race for their belief that the goal of creation was for humans to step out of evolution and lord it over the rest of Creation. No other animal makes war. No other animal destroys the ecosystem. I think this is also the theme of Moby Dick, which is about a human named Ishmael. While reading I kept thinking of D. H. Lawrence’s suggestion that the highest a human being can strive for is to simply be a good animal. The most interesting part of the book is it’s reinterpretation of the Adam and Eve story. Instead of spending their lives under the Tree of Life, they sinfully ate from the forbidden Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, making it possible for them to replace the gods in determining the fate of all the rest of the creation. This original sin made it possible for us to have smart phones, TVs, indoor plumbing, and airplanes, but it also has led us into an inauthentic existence full of meaningless, feelings of insufficiency, and constant anxiety. The primordial hunter-gatherers were far happier. They had plenty to eat, worked only a few hours a day, and didn’t worry about tomorrow. Yet we cling to the things that make us miserable as we spend, take more than we need, and decimate the planet.

I really really like this book. Thought provoking and insightful, compassionate and compelling. And of course a narrating gorilla. Provokes the reader into thinking about what humanity is doing, where we are going, and what space we are leaving and creating for other forms of life. I'd recommend this book to any environmentalist, fans of Socratic dialogue and teachers who want to present some complex concepts about our modern civilized society in a slightly more palatable form that your typical non fiction essays.

I haven't read for pleasure in probably 10 years and this book was recommended a few times by friends. I went into it not really sure what to expect. I don't think I've ever read something so profound yet casual. I knew from the short synopsis that it had to do with some philosophic and high level ideas but I didn't expect it to be explained so casually and wrapped up in the package of an interesting, yet simple, narrative.I immediately bought the other two books in the series.

I really liked this book despite the rather implausible story line, though its true value lies in the underlying message it contains. The premise is that we humans (most of us anyway) consider ourselves to be the epitome of evolution, thus giving us the right to exploit anything and everything in our environment. I have long felt that the tribal life of indigenous peoples around the world is more in line with Nature than the lifestyle of industrialized nations, which is pointed out by Ishmael. I also thought his ideas about feeding the poor are valid in terms of the Laws of Nature, although I can see why those ideas would offend or outrage many people. Basically we all need to become more in tune with Nature in our lives and realize humans are not the supreme beings we think we are. All life is sacred. I would go one step further and say that if some sort of alien intelligence were looking down on earth, then human life would appear to be a cancer on this planet. We fit all the criteria of cancers - i.e. we are reproducing at an exponential rate and we are destroying our host (i.e. the environment).

A wonderful Socratic dialogue about why things are the way they are in modern civilized society with a focus on how we got here. I don't want to spoil it for you; it's a wonderful trip through history and philosophy and religion that will leave your eyes permanently open. I only wish our "leaders" would read it and apply the insights to be gained, but this is a book for everyone. Highly recommended.

This book is, from a practical viewpoint, what we would consider impossible. A gorilla teaching a man in telepathic conversation. But what he teaches him is a lesson our world of humans needs to hear. What needs to happen in order that we humans stop destroying our earth? Ishmael knows and now I know. I wish this book would be required reading in high schools throughout the world, so that everyone of us could get this message.

In essence Ishmael is saying that humans are endangering the earth and their very existence by refusing to believe they are subject to the same treatment as any other invasive species. At some point in the not too distant future over population will surpass our ability to produce enough food to sustain life, and the population will crash. And as an added negative factor, global warming will hasten the process.

Everyday stories to illustrate important perspectives and lessons in both ordinary life and spiritual life (hint: everything is spiritual!)Priceless wisdom from a spiritual master.

Great book on how God's love is the key to spiritual freedom. Includes instructions on how to pay attention to your dreams to invite the wonder of the great unknown into your life.

This very good book should be on the NY Best Seller's list. Full of great adventurous stories, and very nicely tied into how daily life works in most peoples lives.

I did not know the Eckankar religion until I read this book. I am not a religious person, although I grew up and I was surrounded by people who were. But I am a believer and I am open to all philosophy or spiritual expression and praise for the sacred that is given in love and for the good of all. I am against discrimination because I practice the love that unifies and not the violence that judges and separates. By my very personal spiritual growth, I can recognize that we are part of a multidiverse family, that Love and Consciousness are present in everything that exists, I recognize the sacredness of life and the material cosmos, I live in gratitude and loving respect for all living creatures. For all the above I found similarities of my very personal way of connecting with the presence of divinity within and with this religion. I found it enriching to know this group of people who have as basis to explore and develop a very personal unique way of having a relationship with the divine spirit, without anyone interceding for them. It is also very revealing that this religion consider the sound of God as a key element to connect with the divinity. It seems to me that the Eckankar integrates many characteristics of ancestral religions and beliefs of mankind, such as practices through sound and sacred syllables, with dreams, with soul journeys, past lives, world of spirits; and teaches the care of the body as the home of the spirit, and that the experiences of the world are spiritually enlightening (resonates with my truth!).I am very clear that as humanity expands its consciousness, raises its vibrational frequency, it will better accede - sustain - radiate the divine reality to which it belongs; for this reason, I think that this religion is a reflection of this and of a new paradigm, and therefore is more integrative, more practical for everyday life. I discovered that Eckankar teachings promote relationships based on respect for individuality, for diversity, that evolve towards greater compassion and love. I could also glimpse that their practices invite people to empower themselves, resolve their conflicts better, as it proposes to be self-responsible and self-disciplined.Although I find resonance points with Eckankar, I do not intend to join this religion, nor convince anyone to do so. I do not believe that any philosophy or teacher can embrace absolute / total knowledge of the Creative Source, but we can enrich ourselves and listen to other religious beliefs, respect them and honor the part of truth they hold, and develop a more holistic and integral view of the Whole. My gratitude to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book

Fascinating book. Reading it slowly because there's a lot here.

Review

“People like me, who roam their gardens with a trowel in one hand and a plant in the other, looking for any empty dirt in which to plant need this book. Ideas for color combinations as well as combinations of form, texture, and habit can help even us color-challenged gardeners have great-looking gardens. Different seasons, different environments, and different plant mixes are blended sensibly and artistically under Colston Burrell's artistry. A terrific read!” —Allan Armitage, professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia and author of Herbaceous Perennial Plants and Specialty Cut Flowers“Talk about a great combination! Cole Burrell's brilliant design talent blends with his extensive experience as a gardener and a plantsman to make this book both visually dynamic and enormously informative. Not only are there numerous ideas for inspiring design combinations, but practical tips on soil, light, and maintenance requirements for the plants abound. This book should help every gardener-- from the beginner to the professional-- design gardens that look as good in the landscape as they do on paper.” —Tracy DiSabato-Aust, author of The Well-Tended Perennial Garden

Burrell has an eye for putting perennials together in ways that make garden colors sing. The cover is a prime example. That Red Valerian is something you don't see all that often in garden centers, yet it is lovely and blooms all season long, so I was glad to learn about it and what it goes well with. The book made me aware of the many lesser-known or overlooked perennials that seem to be out there, even if you might have to search online to find them. It is filled with color photographs, and has ideas and design plans for just about every conceivable type of color palette, climate, and season you're working with, be it woodland, waterside, desert, or tropical. Maybe I'm jaded, but despite the dozens of garden styles presented here, relatively few were so breathtaking that they stopped me in my tracks. Hence the four stars.

I have been gardening for about 15 years. I have read more gardening books than I can count, visited public gardens for ideas and spent hours in garden centers. This is the single best resource I have. I bought this only a month ago and it has already transformed my garden. I already had some of the plants in my garden, and when I resituated them according to her suggestions, viola! Instant impact! I have half the book dogeared and underlined.~I’ve seen numerous reviews complaining about grainy, unclear pictures. There must be more than one printing of this. The pictures in my book are clear and beautiful.

This compact book is packed with inspiration, colorful photos and examples of color combinations!! This is exactly what I was looking for because the photos give you a real feel for how the plants will look together. One of the gardens I am planning this year is a butterfly garden and I was pleased this has a great example of plants grown together to encourage butterflies and other pollinators. There are so many combinations of colors and styles as well as special gardens (shade, wet, dry, etc...), even as an experienced gardener I found some terrific new ideas in this book. Happy I made this purchase!

Received this book in a timley fashion. The book was in great shape. It is an old book, some 20 years or so. One thing about gardening, it's not real faddish. There have been some trends which are currently being featured that are addressed in this book, just not the focus of the book. Other than that little issue, a garden is pretty much a garden. Color combos being the most noticeable. Might want to keep these issues in mind when purchasing used garden books.

If you've ever drooled over perfectly arranged landscapes designed with fabulous color combinations, texture, and an array of plants all sizes and shapes who's colors are pleasing to the eye, this book is your tool. There are many garden companies that offer pre-designed gardens, but they're expensive and sometimes have plants that you just don't care for. This book gives you ideas, plans, tips on how to combine plants in such a way that it looks like a professional landscaper came and did all the work. Every design is wonderful, the photography is superb and the gardens are beautiful. A real asset for anyone who wants to have a beautiful garden without paying a designer/landscaper to do it for you. A great book.

This is a great book for the gardener new to design. It presents a fairly simple scheme for creating a flower bed that will have perennials blooming throughout the growing season. For someone wanting to create a new bed or who has just purchased a newly-built home with nothing but minimal landscaping, this book would help in planning a more colorful landscape. However, I do think that adding a chapter on incorporating perennials and shrubs would have enhanced the book as so many situations call for them. For instance, foundation beds with nothing but perennials would mostly be bare during the winter; shrubs, particularly evergreens, would give additional structure. Otherwise, this is a great place to start in planning a design with it's simple to follow, well thought-out steps.

To say stunning combinations is a vast under-statement if ever there were one. This book provides color combination from subtle to bold for all locations in the garden. The only end of possibilities is your own imagination!

Not very creative - quite boring actually.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Marry a well-established subject-matter expert to a publisher recognized for its lavish four-color and educational tomes, and the honeymoon will last forever. Antiques maven and collector Miller talks all about furniture in what could easily be dubbed the best reference book of 2005. Twelve information-packed chapters divide and conquer, starting with 4000 B.C.E. to 1600 C.E and ending with postcontemporary and modern in 1970 to the present. There is nary a second to pause and linger: page after page describes the period, its defining elements of style, and its famous artisans and books and offers historical time lines and a collection of sample chairs, tables, case pieces, desks, and the like. The 3,000 photographs are superb, each with brief description, date of manufacture, dimensions, provenance (when known), occasional price (from $200 to more than $450,000), and sometimes the dealer code. More than enough education to prompt an even larger stampede of collectors. Useful addresses, further reading, dealer codes, and glossary are appended. A few months ago, I found this book while browsing through the shelves at a local bookstore. The fantastic pictures and descriptions in the book ignited my interest in furniture history. This is not a how-to book, but if you want an understanding of the details that are characteristic of particular furniture styles -- as well as some background on the historical, political and social forces that influenced these designs -- you probably won't find a better reference manual. The book covers furniture from around the world over a 3,000-year period and includes over 3,500 excellent photographs and illustrations. Regardless of your interests and tastes -- from Chippendale to Capellini or Newport to Newson -- you'll find examples and information on styles, history and biographies that will broaden your knowledge of furniture development. Furniture has twelve chapters, covering styles from the ancient furniture of Egypt, Greece and Rome to European styles of the 17th to 19th centuries. There are also chapters on Chinese, South African and American furniture, as well as a discussion on contemporary designs and directions. Each chapter opens with an historical overview of the era being examined. For each era, there is also a timeline of events that helps the reader understand factors that influenced each era's furniture designs and materials. The historical discussion in each chapter is followed by a section called "Elements of Style," where that era's prominent stylistic details are thoroughly examined, followed by examples of magnificent manifestations of furniture in different countries. Within each style, Miller presents the reader with an ongoing understanding of how the three basic furniture forms -- chairs, tables and case pieces -- evolved and who the influential makers were. The appendices of this book are also noteworthy. They include: * Anatomy of Furniture. Contains descriptions of many common furniture elements such as plinths, friezes, escutcheons and cross-banding. * Useful Addresses.A listing of museums, galleries and historical buildings around the world. * Further Reading. An extended list of books and publications on the subject. * Dealer Codes. A list of identifying codes for dealers and auction houses that have been involved in the selling of many of the pieces featured in the book. * Glossary. A six-page section containing valuable, concise definitions and descriptions of important furniture terms. * Index. A well-cross-referenced index to individuals, countries, styles and furniture types presented in the book. In short, Furniture shows in brilliant photographs and scholarly research how historical and social events influenced furniture development. This will be an excellent addition to your reference shelf or, better yet, a well-read and often-referenced display for your coffee table.. . . Alan Young

Recommended by a fine furniture craftsman as THE book to have as an overview to recognizing furniture styles throughout history. My copy is definitely "used" but quite serviceable. This is an airplane flight over the history of furniture style, not a dissertation on furniture development. I would buy it again. Shame it is out of print.

This book is out of print and not easy to find but a wonderful reference book for furniture design. The copy I received was in decent condition, although did have noticeable wear.

A professional Interior Designer of 22 years, I also teach Interior Design at the University level. I am proud to require this as our textbook for History of Furniture. The photography, the selected pieces, the detailed information --- on-target! Students actually enjoy learning historical styles, all-the-while picking-up a little World History along the way. (Warms a teacher's heart!)The book contains elegant photos of furniture only found in world famous museums. Judith Miller has given us an up-close and personal look at seldom seen antiques, as well as more current pieces. Even the dedicated student would have had to spend years visiting select museums for just a peek. The quality of the research, the pictures, even the quality of the paper tells the reader "something special is behind this cover".All this AND, it's a gorgeous Coffee Table Book; worthy of a Christmas gift to that hard-to-buy-for person on everyone's list.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend and she was overcome because they had used this book as a textbook in college (she got a degree in Design) and she had wanted to keep it at the time but couldn't afford it, so sold hers back. I didn't know that when I bought it, but it turned out to be the perfect gift! She keeps it at her bedside and goes through it often.

I got this book because I just love furniture and love knowing the history of certain types. This book is great because it has vibrant color photos and walks you through the timeline of the history of furniture styles from BCE to contemporary.

Another Judith Miller antiques book. Gorgeous photos & easy to follow diagrams. Like all of her books, much of what she covers is museum quality & in a price range that most people won't ever buy or sell. Still, a beautiful book though not everyday useful.

The most awesome furniture book I've ever read. This book is a piece of art by itself.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of July 2018: India is the world’s fastest growing democracy, with an economy that is rapidly expanding, making a handful of Indians fantastically wealthy. At the same time, millions of Indians live in poverty, sometimes subsisting just feet from the fancy, almost unimaginable urban homes of the super-rich. James Crabtree uses the home of the reclusive billionaire Mukesh Ambani (that is his home on the cover) as a symbol of an Indian system that Crabtree likens—quite convincingly—to our own Gilded Age. Like in other places around the world, fair government appears to be no match against the vast sums of private capital that the “Bollygarchs” employ to cement their interests. Crabtree uses interviews and riveting reporting to give us a fascinating look into the sudden, sometimes shocking, and seemingly insurmountable rise of the Indian super-elite, as they surf the wave of globalism. –Chris Schluep, Amazon Book Review

Review

Short-listed for the Financial Times & McKinsey Business Book of the Year 2018“A lively and valuable blend of the empirical and the anecdotal. . . .The best parts of Mr. Crabtree’s book, however, aren’t his observations on the civic state of India (although these are certainly valuable and wise). They are his reportage, in which he relates his encounters with several of the men who are emblematic of the billionaire raj.” —Tunku Varadarajan, Wall Street Journal“Thrilling. . . . The Billionaire Raj does the great service of . . . showing how India’s political system and its firms are symbiotically connected, in an entertaining—and sometimes disturbing—fashion.” —The Economist“A nuanced portrait. . . . chock-full of profoundly revealing vignettes from various corners of India’s endlessly diverse society and economy.” —Jonathan A. Knee, The New York Times“An excellent survey of India’s economic and political transformation. . . .Crabtree’s Indian story is a cautionary tale of globalization’s excesses and the consequences for one of the world’s most unequal societies.” —The Washington Post“Crabtree’s vivid portrayal of the corruption of politics is very informative, and thought-provoking. . . .The most comprehensive and eminently readable tour of economic India.” —Meghnad Desai, Financial Times“A stylish, sweeping survey of modern day India. . . . Crabtree is diligent in his research and brutally fair to his interviewees.” —Ann Pettifor, The Times Literary Supplement“An enlightening and engaging story of wealth and poverty in India, but also a sad indictment of the power of inequity in subduing and overwhelming its areas of success." —Amartya Sen, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics“James Crabtree has written a lucid, detailed, and at times epic account of the new India, opening our eyes to the economic and social transformation that has quietly occurred there in recent years, behind the facade of the headlines. A must read for all those interested in the political and economic destiny of the subcontinent.” —Robert D. Kaplan, author of The Return of Marco Polo’s World “James Crabtree, once a hugely-admired star foreign correspondent, has transformed himself into a brilliant writer and analyst of the Indian super rich. This timely, fascinating and eye-opening book is also—a rarity for a book about money—wonderfully witty and beautifully written.” —William Dalrymple, author of The Last Mughal“James Crabtree distinguished himself as the most insightful journalist writing for the Financial Times from India. It is not surprising therefore that he has now written a book that offers a splendid overview of the issues that have been raised concerning India’s spectacular growth since the reforms began in 1991. It is bound to become a classic.” —Jagdish Bhagwati, co-author of Why Growth Matters "Billionaire-watching may seem like voyeuristic fun, but it also provides serious insights about where a nation is headed. James Crabtree does just that in The Billionaire Raj, as he traces the incredible rise of India’s new super-rich and everything they reveal about the state of India’s political economy. Mixing colorful anecdotes with serious analysis, Crabtree's urgent book gives us far more than just vicarious thrills about India’s new Gilded Age." —Ruchir Sharma, author of The Rise And Fall Of Nations“Who are the Indian nouveau riche and what do they want? James Crabtree’s The Billionaire Raj will prove the defining work on these questions. It is a must-read for anyone interested in wealth, inequality, India, or the evolution of capitalism.” —Tyler Cowen, author of The Complacent Class “A fascinating look into the world of the Indian business elite—the ‘Bollygarchs’—and their political entanglements. James Crabtree deftly explores the changing balance between big money and democratic accountability, shedding considerable light on whether the country will sustain the miracle that is the Indian democracy or go the way of populism and authoritarianism, as so many others have.” —Dani Rodrik, author of Straight Talk on Trade"Crabtree's stylish writing and sharp insights bring to life the extremes of a country changing with bewildering rapidity, and one the world will find increasingly hard to ignore. The Billionaire Raj is an essential guide if you want to understand modern India, as you must." —Edward Luce, author of In Spite of the Gods“A wonderful book! It artfully weaves together lively stories of India’s billionaires while retaining a balanced perspective on the the big picture of the rise of India. It is not easy to write contemporary history but Crabtree manages to get to the heart of the matter—the problem of India’s state capacity and the need to reform the institutions of governance.” —Gurcharan Das, author of India Unbound

The Biltmore Estate sprawls across 8,000 acres in Asheville, North Carolina. With 179,000 square feet, the former residence of George Vanderbilt is the largest private home in the United States. Few private residences anywhere rival the sheer ostentation of the Biltmore Estate. The most glaring exception is the home of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani. Antilia rises 160 meters (525 feet) above South Mumbai and encompasses 400,000 square feet. Ambani built the 27-story home at an estimated cost of nearly $2 billion. A staff of 600 keeps it running round the clock. Antilia thus exemplifies the over-the-top excess on display in contemporary India. But it's merely one of innumerable examples of the lifestyle of so many of the country's more than 100 billionaires.Little wonder, then, that British journalist and strategic analyst James Crabtree would characterize the era as "India's New Gilded Age" in The Billionaire Raj. The Gilded Age analogy is apt, and Crabtree builds on it throughout his thoroughly researched account. The focus in his book is on the men who dominate India's industrial economy and the politicians who have enabled them. Above all, The Billionaire Raj is a story of corruption. The collusion between government and industry in 21st-century India mirrors that in late 19th-century America before the Progressive Era began to put the brakes on. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been widely expected to play a role much like that of President Theodore Roosevelt in reining in the super-rich. To be fair, the most excessive examples of corruption do seem to have been eliminated. But the economic reforms long expected from Modi have yet to materialize. Is India's new Gilded Age a temporary condition?Crabtree notes that "the Indian subcontinent had been the planet's largest economy for most of the last two millennia." The Industrial Revolution changed that by shifting much of the planet's wealth to the West. However, in the 21st century, the tide is turning back to Asia. Crabtree speculates that either India or China might rise to the top of the world's economic heap by the middle of this century. He seems to be betting on India to win this race. But the problems he highlights in The Billionaire Raj cast doubt on this speculation. The country's new Gilded Age does not lay a firm foundation for continuing rapid growth.Economic inequality and its consequencesOne of the country's greatest challenges is economic inequality. "India should now rightly be viewed alongside South Africa and Brazil as one of the world's least equal [large] countries," Crabtree writes. While India's billionaires live in sybaritic splendor, hundreds of millions of people languish in poverty-stricken rural communities and teeming slums. (Reliable statistics about poverty in India are hard to come by. Sources differ widely. But it's likely that at least half of the country's population, or 600 million people, live on less than $2 per day.) As the country's resources shift upwards to the fraction of 1% at the top of its pyramid, the untapped talent and energy of the poor remain a drag on India's potential. It's hard to imagine that changing. After all, "only one percent of Indians pay any income tax at all."Colorful portraits of the country's nouveau riche billionairesIn The Billionaire Raj, you'll meet some of the most colorful characters to be found anywhere. Most are industrialists. Some are politicians. Some are both. You'll meet the "Branson of Bangalore" and the movie star who ably managed a state of 60 million people for decades. (She was so beloved that some of her followers committed suicide when she died.) And you'll meet the airline and liquor tycoon who lives in exile in England to escape prosecution for debts he left when his empire collapsed at home. None of these are people you or I might ever have the opportunity to meet. But Crabtree got to know them.About the authorFrom 2011 to 2017, James Crabtree was the Mumbai bureau chief for the Financial Times. At this writing, he is an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore. Prior to entering journalism, Crabtree was a senior policy advisor in the UK Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

James superbly examines three foundational forces of India today, that are also quite familiar both globally and here in the States — a rising and significant inequality of wealth; how the rich have become super rich; and the role of “crony capitalism” is making it so. He provocatively in ways I had not considered compares India today with our own experience in our “Gilded Age” of Rockefeller’s and Carnegies in the 19th century. Then as now, he underscores “the speed which they built their fortunes and lack of conscience they displayed while doing so.” But, then as now, it ushered in a new political era of progressives who were willing to reign in corruption and excess foundational to America in the next century.Telling the near spy-novel like rise of remarkable, little known in the West figures who built empires especially in areas of land, natural resources and government contracts and licenses — it was clear why a symbiotic relationship with the myriad of national and local government and politics exists. He is even handed with a reporters eye on the rise of Modi and his efforts to tame corruption and shift India into a new era, and the forces and personal challenges that weigh heavily upon it. He provocatively suggests — as the likes of Samuel Huntington, Robert Kiltgaard and Gunnar Myrdal have — that some corruption is useful as it greases the skids to get things done where infrastructure is poor and access to capital low.

Crabtree knows how to tell a story, and his book is riddled with details of unrivaled access to some of the richest Bollygarchs from India. Humorous and deftly written, he takes us inside the homes, jets, and boardrooms of the tycoons steering (and sometimes running aground) one of the fastest growing economies. For anyone who wants to understand the flamboyant corners of India and the extreme disparities we might learn to probe and question, this book is a must. Rather than an ode to the high growth promise of another emerging giant Crabtree pokes holes at how this engine has left many behind, stuck far below the glass towers, and beyond the tinted windows. An important overview by someone intimately familiar with India, but also someone also not hypnotized by its magesty.

My husband liked it until the greed got ridiculous and he refused to let me read it.

Important to know as we descend into oligarchy to see how entitled celebrity works

Incredible. Very well written. Learned a lot about India as an Indian

I think this book is an economic chronicle of india’s two decades post the liberalization of 90’s. Whoever reads it , needs to read it again in 2025. Good read, but could have avoided devoting a whole chapter on cricket betting. There are better books to cover that topic. In contrary devoting a chapter on Media influence is a good one.

Interesting history of India’s development as a country and business’s impact.
