This book has a lot of techniques I never thought about starting with, there are also techniques that I have held onto and used with non animal paintings, but there are also a lot of skipped steps that are not explained that would also be REALLY helpful!!

This book is great for planning a motorcycle trip to Alaska! Particularly good for people who have never ridden in our 49th state. Covers the many aspects of riding in the "Last Frontier." Has suggested itineraries for varying numbers of days while riding in Alaska, which really help to plan your trip.

This book takes you down every Great road, tells you where to get gas, where to eat, what to see, what the locals suggest, and where the hot springs are for some R&R. It even has the 4x4 trails and offshoots.I always do my homework before I go so I know what to see and do, and more importantly, what I NEED to KNOW. This book covers it all for any first timer to Alaska on a bike. This book is very well written, entertaining to read, and a refreshing take on why we ride ADVENTURE Bikes. I now know that going above the Artic Circle has some challenges, and the Denali Highway and the Kenai Peninsula is a must see on two wheels. I cannot imagine planning a trip to Alaska without this book!

Good book great overview of riding possibilities in state of Alaska not just head up to dead horse turn around go home Alaska is like any state in the union if you cover the whole state you will find lots of great roads, people and places. Well in Alaska you don't have to go everywhere they already have so read the book cherry pick what looks go to you and have at it. If you do go buy the book the Kindle format kind of sucks

I have to make a speed run to meet up with spouse in Anchorage for 10 days for exploring my old stomping grounds during the summer. Will use book extensively for ride back home without time constraints. Clear writing, easy to follow recommendations and even has suggested itineraries.

I've been to Alaska 3 times on a motorcycle and I still found the Guide helpful. Not just roads and route suggestions. Where to eat, drink, hot spots, etc. I gave mine to a friend and plan to purchase another.

A great book to read before going to the Mikvah.

This was first lent to me by my rabbi's wife, in response to my inquiries about mikvah. The book is so informative and considerate of the benefits, needs, and relevance to both men and women. It also cuts to the chase about why mikvah is so important, and yet why a once common, dignified part of Jewish life (mikvah) has become so diminished in modern times... very meaningful and interesting context/background that is easy to access/refer to, when sharing with others, the praises and meaning of mikvah and "family purity". Further, in Total Immersion, I appreciate the diverse views of mikvah presented by many of today's Jewish leaders - conservative, orthodox, chassidic, male, female, etc. A very healthy, balanced, informative survey and understanding of mikvah and "family purity" observance. I thank the author and contributors for such a thoughtful, balanced, honorable, real, and dignified effort. My spouse and I will keep our own purchased copy alongside "A Committed Life," by Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis; "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus;" and "The Five Love Languages."

So I just finished Total Immersion 2nd edition from 2006. A girlfriend gave it to me Hanukka of that year and I thought it was going to be boring so I put off reading it for all this time. But I was really pleasantly surprised. Judaism's three pillars are Shabbat, kosher and mikveh. Everybody knows what Shabbat and Kosher is. But what in the world is mikveh? And is it only religious fanatics who use it?This anthology is brilliant because it talks about every conceivable aspect of mikveh. Who uses it. Why they use it. How to use it. What the myths are. What the truth is. All sorts of women use it: there are women who are not at all religious, women who don't want kids, women who are feminists and still use it. We get to hear stories from a convert, academics, a rape victim, someone who lost friend in terror attack, all sorts of different women and even men. I think all the differences are what make it so interesting to read. I thought it was going to be one of those religious pushy books, but it is really cool and fascinating.This is a great education on mikveh - the what, where, why, who and when.

While all of the essays in this book about Jewish women's use of the ritual baths are beautiful and well written, the one by Sara Lejderman of Sweden touched me the most. She was sexually abused as a child, as a teen, and then as a woman. She managed to survive that and become a successful wife and mother, and yet she constantly felt contaminated. The story of her "cure" is a gift to all readers who ever needed to overcome any challenge (which is all of us). May G-d bless Sara Lejderman with good health, happiness, and peace of mind, every day of her life. Even without ever meeting her, I love her.-- Jewish, NY,USA

Eventually, this name became its officially posted designation. A metaphor about religious groups that dwell on Church Folly Lane lurks in this story. It is that of congregations that begin projects symbolizing visionary growth but fail in completion and fall victim to maintenance-oriented lifestyles. This is a metaphor that aptly fits the circumstance of many Unitarian Universalist congregations that have struggled for years to complete the transition from a Pastoral Congregation to a Program Congregation without ever finalizing the shift. However, unlike the St. George church, the reason that keeps most of these congregations in a stalled posture is neither financial nor that of a divided sense of purpose; rather, it is a lack of knowledge about why they are stalled. Even so, deficits that stem from what isnÂ’t known can create the same state of folly as deficits that stem from abandoned dreams. The challenge of this deficit may involve any or all of the following: perceiving that the shift needs to be made understanding the essential differences between the Pastoral and Program Congregations accepting what is required to make the shift determining a game plan for initiating or completing the shift Critical to confronting the issues of the shift is becoming aware of the distinctions between these two types of institutions. Many of our congregations have been Program Congregations in terms of attendance for years without ever having perceived the need to consider the manner by which their members relate, the style of basic leadership they need, the nature of their manifested community, the structure of their reflecting organization, or the focus of their decision-making process in contrast with those characteristic of the Pastoral Congregation. One consequence is that such congregations may continue to organize for failure and tend to call professional leadership that is inappropriate to their needs. The vital resources they expend in ministry simply disappear down a black hole of ineffectiveness. Another consequence is arriving at an attendance or membership plateau that seems impossible to surmount. The cause, in both cases, is likely a lack of awareness of the dynamics that are driving congregational life. Only when this awareness is awakened will the resources expended doing ministry find a maximum and satisfying effectiveness. Thus, one of the more pressing needs in Unitarian Universalism is to grasp and institute this pastoral-to-program shift in congregational life. On a continental basis, it is possible that up to 35% of our congregations are either trying to initiate or complete this shift. And another very large percentage are already solidly participating in the numerical probabilities of one or the other of these attendance-size cultures without doing so in an effective fashion. These two groups of congregations represent the greatest social and financial influence in our religious movement. Until this shift need is engaged and understanding of cultural differences is grasped, a large number of our congregations will continue to languish in ineffectiveness, and their power to transform will remain at low ebb.

This is an excellent book. The author is not the best writer but the information is outstanding. It is an excellent guide for creating a positive functioning Committee on Ministry (COM). It provides the background needed for high functioning COM and even provide sample policies for a COM. even though the writing is wordy and sometimes difficult to wade through, it is worth the effort.

I agree with the reviewers who wish this book had been professionally edited, but I got past that pretty quickly because Latham does such an amazing job describing my congregation without ever having visited it.Point after point after point he nails it. In a denomination that seems always to try to make everybody happy, Latham stands out for calling it as he sees it, particularly with regard to our utter lack of religion mission. If your congregation is in the "program to pastoral transition" (150-200 people attending Sunday programs), then you owe it to yourself and your congregation to read this book (as well as "Raising the Roof" and several other books about church growth dynamics).

This is essential reading for anyone involved in church governance or growth strategies. It carefully delineates the importance of church size and the programing and governance that are needed to match that size and build for growth.Latham gives Board Members and church leaders the theory and the concrete tools they need to choose ministers that suit their needs and put the right framework in place to serve their congregation.

I found Latham a bit of an ass, pedantic, poorly edited and prone to ex cathedra pronunciations, something that doesn't sit well with many UUs- we're not generally fans of clerical infallibility. That said, I found his book provocative and am recommending it to my fellow lay leaders. Latham asks some of the right questions about the organizational effects of growth in numbers and when you disagree with his answers, you have to challenge yourself to come up with better ones. I was annoyed by his snide dismissal of Joys & Sorrows, but immediately began comparing his points to the reality of my Fellowship, found some areas of agreement and a new vision of the nature of community. To question is the answer.

Very good information, but unfortunately Latham provides a graphic example of why one should never self-publish without running the manuscript by a proof reader.

Lots of useful information in this book, but I wish the writing quality and organization were better.

Interesting book, but wasn't exactly what our church is looking for or suited for.

Had a hard time getting into this book as I found it overly pedantic and had too much church -ese and gobledygook. As I fought on, however, I found it more and more interesting and potentially useful. I recommend it to the boards of the "pastoral" size congregations to read it for ideas on solving their problems of growth.

Frostgrave is a narrative tabletop skirmish game that is rules-lite but still complex enough that good strategy is as important as lucky dice. The fact that there is an advancement and treasure system that carries between battles allows your warband to change and grow over time (or be wiped out when everything just inexplicably goes wrong.)While there is a line of miniatures for this game it is very friendly toward substituting fantasy minis of your choice. Optional Rules and Expansions keep things fresh and can be used to ramp up the difficulty and complexity of the game is you become more familiar with it.The only problems that I had with this game are firstly that just playing the few scenarios in the core book becomes repetitive, which means you're going to want to pick up expansions quickly and also become adept at designing your own scenarios and campaigns. Fortunately this is quite easy once you get the hang of it. Purchasing the Ulterior Motives expansion, which adds random and sometimes hidden secondary objectives for each player is virtually a MUST. If you pick up only one Expansion make it that one.Secondly, I've had to house-rule some of the Random Monster behaviors to make them more dangerous. Using the existing ruleset I've generally found that Random Monsters tend to show up, mill around a bit, and then wander away. Increasing their "detection range" and making them move directly toward the middle of the table on their first activation if no enemies are in line of sight helps this tremendously.Aside from those nitpicks I would say that this is a good way to spend 45 minutes to an hour, and if you add names, backstory, and narrative to each game you play it's very much like playing a D&D dungeon crawl, where each player controls a party of adventurers that are all competing for glory and treasure in the same ruins.

This book is great! The art is beautiful, the rules are clear and well presented. It even includes a campaign you can play through. You can play this game with any figures you already own. I've been using mini's from boardgames as both my warband and the monsters. This game is a lot of fun to play. If you are getting into Tabletop Wargames or want to spice up your games this book is for you. I also recommend the expansion booklets.My only criticism is that the spells are repeated; they give you a list of spells with all there information and then at the end of the book they repeat the same info in cut out card form. Yes, that's nitpicking and photocopying the cards straight from the book could be useful, but you can download them from the website for free.

Frostgrave is a fantastic book on miniature wargaming with a focus on a Magic user (Wizard) being the leader of a small group (around 10 figures) exploring and competing for treasures in a magical city. The city has been frozen for a thousand years and now has become exposed! The background is simple yet complete enough to give great flavor. There are ten different magic using types of characters each with their own spell list and flavor. The combat system is also simple and deadly with everything resolved via a dice roll on a twenty sided dice (d20). There are multiple scenarios with lots of different settings and special events. The ruined city is truly filled with magic and the writing includes fun sidebars discussing the kind of things going on to spark your imagination. The players get to create a location (again with flavor that means something) to operate from as a sort of base. Between games they can add to and improve that same base. Additionally, random events can happen to bring different situations to light. For anyone thinking of putting together a miniature game for beginners or a group this is an excellent resource! I can't wait to run this in some of our gaming stores and for friends!

Holy sweet christmas! What a fun but laid-back casual skirmish game! You get the customization and modularity of using any terrain and miniatures you like and the feeling of both tactical tabletop war games and old school RPGs. Lots of fun, easy to houserule things in and out, and the setting premise (wizards and their mercenary bands exploring an ancient frozen city filled with monsters, competing looters, and treasures galore) are very appealing.The downsides I'm seeing after playing a few times are more about game balance. Each wizard picks one of 10 schools of magic (each with 8 spells) as a primary school, but not all the schools' spells are very well balanced, and the inherent leveling-up system seems to reward a few schools WILDLY over others (especially the Elementalist). Further, I don't understand why you can just convert gold and found relics into any items you want (even said rare magical treasures found in the game); I plan to house rule that you can buy anything *except* the magical treasures, as that's the whole point of the game! But honestly those are minor gripes.It's a fast-to-learn and fast-to-play somewhat rules-light game. Great for gamers on a time crunch, for introducing new players to the hobby, for an inexpensive skirmish game (literally any minis/terrain will do!), and for hobbyists in love with frozen lands terrain!

I bought the PDF version a while back, but growing up with actual books I had to to order the actual hardcover. PDFs can be convenient, but aren't as easy to thumb through!I've not yet played a game, but this is a neat little ruleset. If you ever played HeroQuest/Warhammer Quest or similar type games, Frostgrave runs in that vein of game systems. It's a skirmish based wargame, meaning you're only going to need a few miniatures, not a horde of them like you would need for a standard fantasy/medieval themed game.If you already have a good supply of fantasy miniatures you're probably already set to play. All you'll need is scenery, which is easily made or purchased. Lots of fantasy/medieval themed paper building models are available that are quite suitable for Frostgrave.Is there violence? Well, it's kind of a wargame, so...

I was drawn to this book because 1) it's been super popular among the Instagram reader community, and 2) there is not one, but four Londons (mega points for creativity, Schwab).What did I like about this book? Well, the whole premise was highly original. Kell, the main character, can travel between 4 Londons—White London, Red London, Black London, and Grey London. Each London has a different relationship with magic, whether they embrace it, worship it, kill for it, or don't believe in it (not in that order). But Kell and one other character are the only ones able to travel between the Londons, which means they are messengers and ambassadors for the leaders (which leads to some interesting problems).I also liked that the book wasn't all about romance—there was very little. Lila and Kell worked as a team. The book also dealt with brotherly relationships and caring for family, even if they are not your blood relatives. It also tackled the age-old question of "what do you do if you come into a lot of power, but it's an evil power," which naturally includes character motive investigation, willpower, and self discovery.However, as with many hyped books, this one fell a little short of my expectations (hence, 3.5 stars). What went wrong? Let me share:1) Dialogue – I didn't feel like it flowed naturally and was a tad cliche.2) The Strong/Independent Female Main Character Trope – Lila Bard is a cool character, but I'm just a little tired of the whole tough girl characters who don't need a man or anyone else and don't embrace their uniquely feminine strengths. Why does a girl have to act like a man to get attention in the literary community? Why can't she be feminine and strong? *steps off soapbox*3) Character/plot originality – Although the premise was unique, much of it felt like other YA lit fantasy that I had read before and that was better executed (e.g., Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and the Grisha trilogy).4) World building – I wanted more details. I can never have too much solid world building, and I think it's essential for fantasy to connect with the reader.Overall, a fun read, but not quite a 4-star rating.

This book had so much potential. There's a lot to like but it just didn't quite deliver.PROS- V.E. Schwab has a really nice writing style. It flows effortlessly and you can fly through the pages. Her descriptions paint a solid picture.- The world building is well done. I liked the different Londons and their back stories were interesting. There were plenty of scenes I enjoyed quite a bit.- The Blood Magic/Elemental powers are cool.CONS- The 2 main characters Kell & Lila are both very clichè and uninteresting. Lila was actually very annoying most of the time. She was being very immature at times despite the situation being very serious. She's made out to be a strong female character, which I like, but she always needs to be saved by Kell. Kell complains a lot for no reason. He's also not always honest when he should be.- The Pacing was a little too slow for me at times. There weren't enough epic moments or tense situations to keep me very interested. Once I got more than half way through, I wanted it to just end.- I felt like the Author was very close to blowing me away but she never really did. I don't want to continue the series.I read Six of Crows right before this and that impressed me in every way that this book didn't.

It wasn't bad. I listed to the audio book and found the narrator, Steven Crossley, trying too hard to be Jim Dale and not being successful. The voices he did were kind of annoying, and he overacted sometimes. Lila was already an annoying character, as someone else mentioned in their review, and the voice he did made her even more so. As for the story itself, it's good. Nothing spectacular. It took a while for me to get into it. It was nothing that I haven't read yet. 'His Dark Materials' or the 'City and the City' have done this concept first and are much more engaging. Maybe if I was still a teenager, when I discovered the wonderful world of fantasy, I would have been more engaged, but I have read so many other works similar to this, that I think I will recommend other books before I read this one. The writing is good, the world building is complete, and the story is told well, it's just not really original and Lila is an annoying character. And if you do choose to read this, READ it, don't listen to the audio book!

I have now read both of the "Happier Than..." books, and they are worth double the price just to laugh out loud so much! Truly, I can't remember the last time I read one book that made me laugh so hard, let alone two.I have been to Costa Rica twice now, and I intend to spend at least my winters there once my last teenager goes to college in a couple of years. I have seen enough of the country to experience the absolute awe and amazement at how a place can so capture your soul...exactly what Nadine writes about. And at the same time, I have also experienced the necessity of leaving one's expectations of efficiency at home in the States...which she also writes, so eloquently, about (although many times I have also been pleasantly surprised). There is so much to Costa Rica, and although I was just there a couple of months ago, I miss it terribly, and reading Nadine's books makes me feel a bit better.Trust me, even with all the true stories of the good, the bad, and the ugly in Nadine's books, I would move myself and my family down there in a minute, if only my husband was as enthused (which is why I will probably only be able to spend winters there...there's a limit to his understanding, and his willingness to spend time alone). So, in the meantime I will continue to study Spanish, clean out my closets, do all the good I can here in Montana, and dream of my next visit to "The Land of My People," as my friends have taken to calling Costa Rica when they hear me extolling all its virtues. I am planning to make a month-long visit next year. Thank you, Nadine, for helping me stay sane while I wait and plan.And I apologize if this is more a thank you note than a book review, but let me leave you with this: if you have any interest at all in Costa Rica, and have dreams of living an expat life, or even just vacationing in a peaceful, lovely country with a starling variety of climates, and you like to laugh out loud, then this is the book for you. If, however, you are a whiney, stick-in-the-mud, with no sense of adventure and a penchant for control and immediate gratification, then you will neither like this book nor the country it is written about.And now I am going to go buy Nadine's latest book...

From first to last, it was a charmer full of raucous good humor, low-impact cultural crashes, a fair amount of slapstick and characters who were, and presumably still are, barking mad.It was so funny and well written I frankly didn't believe Nadine Hays Pisani would be able to write a sequel equal to the first book. I was not mistaken in my belief.Indeed, the Sequel does NOT rise to the level of the first. It surpasses it in every conceivable way.You saw that coming, of course, but let me explain all the same.There really isn't a way to compare and contrast the two books, but comparisons are inevitable. Events in the first book were new and fresh to the author and told in a voice that was new and fresh as well.This book is, I felt, more insightful without the usual over-thinking that happens when authors try too hard to be perceptive and take themselves too seriously. In the Sequel, the author casts into deeper waters and the catch is something that will surprise and delight you and that you will savor for a very long time.Mrs. Pisani is not afraid to show us she has grown in wisdom. She makes it clear that she takes it as read, her life and that of her husband is waist deep in a sea of lunacy, but that she is wise enough not to take a moment of that life for granted. She also isn't afraid to demonstrate she hasn't lost her sense of head-banging hilarity.She ignores the easy route of glossing over the stuff of day-to-day life in favor of the easy laughs that can be found in over the top situations. That would be an easy trap into which many authors have fallen. Mrs. Pisani is a woman comfortable with her subject and she makes us understand that she revels in the rich minutiae of her every day life in Costa Rica and wants to share that joy with us.The author's treatment of the subjects covered in The Sequel is rich in understanding, but not just of the life and people she has encountered in Costa Rica.Mrs, Pisani gives us more and does it with wild humor and charming good grace. With a light touch and palpable kindness, she opens a door for us to a better understanding of our own lives, our own loves, and, ultimately, ourselves.Although an extremly talented writer, her real talent lies in another direction as well. The author has the matchless ability of letting us know in pants-splittingly entertaining ways the depth of enjoyment she gets out of life is something is that is available to us all no matter where we are.Although her setting in a small Latin American country, Nadine Hays Pisani has not limited herself or us to this time or that place. Generously, she takes us along as she explores the zaniness and the poignancy of life as it exists everywhere and at any time.There are those who will with a scowl decry the author's view of Costa Rica."Hey, that's not the way the real Costa Rica is!!!" some might glare and say. Some people feel, apparently, they are the arbiters of what is and isn't real. I'm so jealous of Nadine and Rob. I read her first book-which is amazing and the reason I couldn't wait to read the next two. I'm currently on the 3rd book, which is a detailed guide on How to move to CR and not wanna hang yourself with all the crazy stuff you have to go through. Her stories literally laughing so hard I was crying. It's the life I have wanted for a few years now-life on a beautiful island with genuine people, that is safe, and where family can't wait to visit. I have since planned my trip to CR in August. I have been to alot of the Caribbean islands, but I have a feeling CR is going to be life changing and I hope I get the same feelings Nadine gets while visiting-that CR is the most beautiful place on Earth. Being from New Jersey I definitely relate to her complaints about the stressful lifestyle. It sucks! I now find myself saying to my fiancée (we own our own business together) whenever something stressful or crazy happens, "Costa Rica" looks better every minute. I don't know if we could do it though. We are so used to having the finest things in life it would be a huge lifestyle change for us I'm not sure we could adapt like Nadine did. But hey you never know until you try. Who knows what the future holds for us. But I won't wait too long. Life is too short to not enjoy every day. And knowing there is a place on this earth that is pure perfection in paradise, it makes me want to go there permanently. Thank you Nadine for sharing your personal experiences and thoughts. And thank you for putting yourself out there and making the world see there is other ways to live. And thanks for the laughs I really really enjoyed your book and I've told all my friends about it.
