The story unfolds in parallel narratives, most told by an omniscient narrator describing the resistance struggle, and fewer chapters as a narrative told by 15-year-old Tamar, the granddaughter of one of the resistance fighters. The locale and time shift between Holland in 1944 and '45 and England in 1995. The constant dangers faced by the resistance fighters as well as their determination to succeed in liberating their country from German occupation come vividly to life. Dart, Tamar, and Marijke are the main characters in this part of the book. Their loyalty to one another and the movement is palpable though love and jealousy gradually enter the story and painfully change the dynamics. My wife picked it first and recommended it to me.I have long been a fan of WW2 stories, beginning with WSC's The Gathering Storm. Peet does a good job of keeping one anxious to read more. I think I like historical fiction since the authors can give us the benefits of theirresearch in other countries and SOE and OSS stories. I call them stories but they were really better than telling a tale from scratch.Tamar keeps one guessing till the end but you hope you're wrong. I look forward to more of Peet's work.

I love stories about WWII, but only if they are very well written and edited and very realistic. I read many of the Amazon reviews on this book before buying it, always starting with the one-star, going to the two and three-star reviews before making my decision. I decided to take a chance on this book and am very, very glad I did. Very well edited. The author obviously did a fantastic job researching the subjects, archived war files, even interviewing a surviving veteran parachutist who worked with the Dutch resistance just as the main characters did. The characters are so real, wonderfully crafted and developed, they pop off the page. Descriptions of the environments and scenery - just wonderful. Great suspense, mystery, twists and turns. So very accurate, even the weapons used by the Allies and Germans throughout the story. The story moves at a perfect pace, does not bog down. It was hard to put this book down, and I always looked forward to getting back into the story. Long chapters, alternating between 1944/45 and 1995 when the granddaughter becomes interested in her grand parents mysterious past stories. In my mind this is a clear five-star story. Mal Peet - congratulations on a wonderfully crafted tale of high adventure, personal experiences, the horrors of war and the evil inflicted upon the Dutch civilians by the invading Nazis. If you are interested in the subject matter, I recommend Tamar.

Excellent tale of espionage and human relationships during WWII. The scene shifts back and forth from present day England to WWII Holland, but it is never confusing. A young girl investigates a box of mementos she inherits from her beloved grandfather, and reveals a surprising story of resistance fighters, military and civilian. The book allows a close- up glimpse into the day to day concerns of the populace and their trained resistance leaders, who parachuted in from England. This is a story of ordinary folks doing heroic acts, in aid of freedom. The Germans are starving them out and killing people almost randomly, but the citizens resist the terror and learn to cope with the most horrendous burdens. In the present day story, the young heroine has to unravel a series of clues left to her, to ultimately reveal a secret kept since the war. It is a war story, and there's a fair amount of action and much suspense, but you never feel overwhelmed by the horror, at the expense of interest in the people. It is fairly uplifting, in the end.​

I was pleasantly surprised when I began this book and was immediately swept up in the 1944 plot line. The characters were well written and it was suspenseful. It showed the deprivations and the atrocities but also the strength and courage of the people willing to risk their lives to defeat the creeping evil that was the Nazis.The author did a good job of showcasing that people who try to do good can also cause great harm and that good people are capable of terrible things as well as good things even when fighting evil.The plot line set forward in time was not as engaging to me as it was easy to figure out exactly what was going on there and where it would take us. I suppose as a form of foreshadowing for the WWII portion of the book it worked ok, but I was just not as interested in that portion of the book.All in all however, the writing was good, the characters likeable and believable and I think it was well researched.

I realized my review is coming years after this wonderful book's release, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed it. Enough to use it in a book group I conduct. My heart was pounding from the start as I anticipated the men parachuting into Holland during World War II. The love story, the competition between underground factions as well as the competition between the two young men were well handled and riveting.The details about the horrors the Dutch endured under the Nazi occupation educated me about something I never knew.I believe Peet's handling of the material is well-suited for both adults and young people.Well done!

Historical fiction doesn't get much better than this. The author cleverly paces the wartime events with the modern 'detective' work of a pair of teens trying to unravel the past - and find out its far more tangled than they could have ever imagined. The story is bleak at times but I particularly admire the many issues the author explores by the end - jealousy and betrayal brought on by the pressure-cooker of occupation and resistance, the guilt and silence of the survivors, and finally the nature of forgiveness. The ending is very good, leaving an open question to the readers - would you have forgiven? You will wonder for days afterward.I read the Kindle edition and for the Kindle readers, this was a very well edited product and many notches above the usual horrid quality of ebooks. It's time to hold the publishers accountable for shoddy workmanship, so in that spirit, thumbs up to Candlewick for doing justice to Mal Peet's brilliant story.

The present-day story is told by 15-year-old Tamar, whose grandfather has committed suicide and left her a box of WWII items. The main part of the story, set in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation, is narrated in third person. It concerns two young men, Tamar and Dart, who are resistance fighters. On the one hand, we read their story, and on the other we are in the present, trying to determine not only what happened, but why. A very good novel.

The Oakland Raiders and the 1970s were tailor-made for each other. It was a time when professional sports (aside from golf) were considered blue collar forms of entertainment ... especially the NFL. The Raiders (like the Steelers and Eagles) personified a blue collar town with their aggressive style of play, production and lack of flamboyancy. The 1970s is an era when many of the fans that filled their stadiums may have been as tough as the players on the field. It was the last gasp of "old school "football where injured players kept playing and the ailment known as "turf toe" had yet to be defined. The only Nike logo in sight might have been on a few pairs of cleats; there was no internet and no fantasy football. Looking back, the Raiders were an icon of that blue collar era of football. One of the lasting images of Monday Night Football was the intro and its close up of Willie Brown's face, with his helmet bouncing around, as he returns an interception for a touchdown. His face is pure Raider - a determined, almost angered look. Peter Richmond hits a grand slam with his book that details the inception, construction and coronation of the most successful Raider team ever: that hodge-podge collection of thugs, animals and boozers that comprised the winners of Super Bowl XI. Not only does Richmond deliver the history and juicy details of the team, his book serves as a time machine that takes the reader back to a long lost period where the business side of the sport took a backseat to the game itself.One does not necessarily have to be a fan of the Oakland Raiders to appreciate this book as Richmond's work should prove to be an interest to a wide range of readers. Fans of sports, history, business and human interest stories should be able to appreciate this book. As someone with a nostalgic interest of growing up in the 1970s, I particularly enjoyed the time warp aspect of this book because it brings back memories of trading football cards, as my collection of cards included many of the players highlighted in this book (and the Raider players always seemed to look more menacing on those cards). Another personal benefit is that it reminded me of the only NFL game I've ever seen live ... the December 24, 1977 playoff game at Baltimore where the Raiders won in double over-time with Dave Casper's Hall-of-Fame worthy performance. Although the 1977 team isn't the focus of the book, the residual talent of the previous season's Super Bowl winning squad was quite evident the following season.Richmond starts with a chapter that served as the ashes from which the eventual Super Bowl champion team was born ... the 1972 controversial "Immaculate Reception" playoff game vs. the Steelers that spawned a heated rivalry between the 1970s two most dominant AFC teams. Richmond presents this as the catalyst that spurred owner Al Davis to buy, deal, inherit and assemble the parts of a championship team of players and coaches. With the seeds of the dream firmly planted by the controversial results of that playoff game, Richmond takes us back the inception of the Raider franchise and how a shrewd and business-savvy Davis finagled ultimate control of the Raiders. Paralleling Davis' ascent is the progression of John Madden's coaching progression that eventually leads to the helm of a talent loaded Raider team with a history of regular season success and playoff failures.With the general framework of coaches and core talent in place, Richmond dissects the guts of team, by taking us into the locker room, on the practice field and out into the decadent Oakland nightlife that occupied so much of the Raider player's time once practice ended. Individual chapters introduce us to groups of men that comprise elements of the team from linemen to defensive backs. Richmond spends a great deal of the book detailing the men, their personalities and the exploits both on and off the field that often generated colorful nicknames like: Foo, Rooster, Dr. Death and Snake. The most amazing aspect is that such an odd band of divergent personalities with virtually no rules could bond so well, work so hard and function totally as a team on a mission. The author successfully corals a majority of the 1976 Raider ensemble to contribute to his book with personal reflections, hilarious stories and affirmation of the bond the men had with each other and their beloved Coach Madden. Even the elusive punter Ray Guy contributes! The details provided in these particular chapters present an addictive reading element as we feel we are actually witnessing these events, both on and off the field.The book culminates in recapping a successful 13-1 regular season record and a post-season run to the Super Bowl that includes yet another rumble with rival and current Super Bowl champion Steelers. Super Bowl XI is deemed "the Promised Land" and although it was a snoozer of a game (and I remember it as being the first Super Bowl I watched in entirety as a kid), the book captures the energy, excitement, drive and ultimate confidence that Raider team displayed in overpowering the Minnesota Vikings. The game itself may have been unexciting, but the build-up leading to the victory and the euphoria experienced by the players is ever-present.Peter Richmond took me back to my first real memories of enjoying pro football as a kid. The manner in which he presents this particular group of men is both entertaining and endearing. Additionally, Richmond's book may be considered a throwing-of-the-gauntlet by arguably presenting the 1976 Oakland Raider team as one of the best teams in NFL history. Although I'm not a Raider fan, after reading "Badasses", I might actually agree with him.

What a fun walk down nostalgia lane. This book tells the story of the Oakland Raiders football team during the 1970s under the leadership of coach John Madden and quarterback Ken Stabler. The Oakland teams of that era won one Super Bowl, were always in championship contention and maintained a storied rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers.The Raiders were a fun-loving group of guys who partied hardy after practice but always showed up on Sunday ready to play. Richmond uses the Raiders' sense of fun and family to contrast the pro football of the 1970s with the modern game of the 21st century, where end zone dances celebrate "me" and corporate rigidity has replaced the joy that use to mark the pro game.The book provides a series a excellent portraits of some of the key Raider players, Coach Madden and the legendary owner Al Davis. As someone who has written about sports in an earlier era (Hoop Crazy: College Basketball in the 1950s), I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in sports history or anyone who remembers the badass Oakland Raiders of years ago.

This book was entertaining.The author chronicled how the Raiders evolved from coming close to eventually beating the Steelers and winning a Super Bowl.The personnel changes were discussed and some of the players participated with interviews.Monte Johnson tells about something he saw on film with the Vikings goal line offense. There was a lot of material about Kenny Stabler, the defensive backs and linebackers- especially Phil Villipiano.This book does not go into much off-the-field detail like Stabler's book "Snake" does.It's an interesting book and there is some Raider organizational history in it. For that I give it 4 stars.

The cover of Badasses states; "one of the best football. books ever written". That is a pretty high compliment and while I haven't read them all I've read a few and this is one of the best football books I have read in a long time. As a kid in the 70's I watched a lot of Raider games on TV and have memories of many of the players mentioned in this book.Peter Richmond gives biographical sketches of many of the Raiders from the 70's and it makes for great reading. The characters on the Raider teams and how John Madden was able to coach them successfully makes for entertaining reading. Richmond laments the old days of football and the Raiders of the 70's who won it all in 1977. If you are a Raider fan naturally you will love this book, if you are a football fan and remember these teams and players ,you just might start rooting for them and look differently at the Silver and Black. Great book.

I'm a old school die hard Cowboys fan even before I really understood the game. I was always interested in the Raiders especially during the years when they exuded the aura of intimidation in their style of playing the game. A good history read for any football fan.

One of my earliest memories involved the Oakland(emphasis on the Oakland) Raiders. My dad had 2 season tickets and my brother and I would alternate going. We'd get to the stadium early to get a Collasal Dog, just a big dog with sauerkraut but very exciting. We sat in the stands surrounded by bikers drinking wine out of Bota Bags. After the games we'd go down to the tunnel where the locker rooms were to wait for the players to get autographs. Huge, manly men wearing suits stopping to give every kid their signuature.I was passionate about the Raiders back then and that's the passion that Richmond gives to this book. He's not just a sports writer here, he's someone who was deeply affected by the team and it shows. All the blood, sweat and stickum of the original bad boys of football is there and Richmond savors every detail.

I got this after I loved the first Kyra Sundance dog tricks book. My dog learned all the basics and most of the tricks that don't require a lot of jumping (she has bad knees). My dog is really intelligent and gets bored easily so I thought this would be great for us to do new things together. This book DOES have a lot of great ideas but you need loads of equipment to even play about 2/3 of these games. Most people don't have pedestals, wobbling boards, giant bouncy balls, and agility equipment just lying around their house. This was disappointing and so far we've only been able to play about 2 games in this book. We can probably play a few more but unless I invest in some of the things Ms. Sundance has this book is a dud.

I'm so glad I didn't pay but $2 for this. If you are new to training games with your dog, or need ideas as a new trainer, this would be a good thing to have on hand. As someone who has trained for 2+ years, has 4 dogs, and works them regularly, I ended up getting nothing new from this book. All of the games also require props, the likes of which you likely won't own unless you've been training and playing training games with your dog(s) for a long time. In all honesty, if you just go on YouTube and search for prop games, training games, and balance training for your dog, you're likely to find a lot of the same stuff.

This is one of my all time favorite dog books! I have a Dalmatian puppy, and I was looking for ways to bond with him that would be fun for both of us. This book has some wonderful and fun games to play with puppies as well as more advanced games and tricks when you're ready for more of a challenge. You don't need a lot of space to play these games - and some of the props required you will have in your house already. My puppy and I started with easy things like Weenie Bobbing (we used our bathtub instead of a splash pool and it worked great) and the Muffin Tin Game and we've been having fun ever since!One thing I love about this book is the activities fit easily into your day. We are all busy, and it's hard to find the extra time to spend quality time with your dog. This book makes it easy!If you're looking for ways to have fun with your dog while building a stronger bond with him (or her) this book is a great choice!

This is a GREAT book! The games are so much fun - Zima's by far favorites are Weenie Bobbing & the Muffin Tin game. I teach a local trick dog class and we use the Muffin tin game as an intro to all tricks working with scent.I really like the set up of this book too. It breaks the tricks into categories like confidence building, coordination, etc. That has come in handy when I try to teach my dog and the dogs in my trick class a good variety of tricks.Zima has earned her Champion Trick Dog title and it is because of THIS specific book! We started with 51 Puppy Tricks (also by Kyra), but when I was struggling to find a coordination trick a 6 month old puppy could do I got this book last Christmas. I taught the Double Beam trick and that was our last step in becoming a champion!Thanks Kyra for your GREAT trick books! After one year of owning a dog I know own all 4 of your trick books (101 Dog Tricks, 51 Puppy Tricks, 101 More Dog Tricks, and this one, 10 Minute Dog Training Games)

I would say that over 80% of the games in this book require additional purchases of items - kiddie pool, agility poles, balance balls, etc. If this were a book of easy-to-do games with items that are easily found around the house, I would give it 5/5. But alas, 1/5 for me due to really only having the ability to play just a handful of games. Waste of money.

Some fun stuff, but too many of these games/tricks require some sort of special equipment. However, if you can make or buy the equipment, and then have a space for storing them, you'll find this genuinely fun.

As mentioned by others, many if not the majority of tricks in this book, require you to have way to much equipment, such as fencing, hula hoops, pipes, cloth tunnels, balance balls, etc. Unless you are willing to go to all that trouble, I would look for another book that has simpler options.

I loved 101 dog tricks and bought this book for quicker activities to do with my dogs. This book stands on its own and does not cross over with the other book which gives you great value.What i likeThe activities vary in difficulty level and definitely make it easy to find something for your dog.the book is broken down into different types of training or activities eg bonding, tricks, obedienceGood indexHas games that build on from each otherWhile some games require props, most of the time you can use substitutesMy only problem is that the formatting for use on the Kindle iPad app is not great. I purchased 10 Waterboxxes from DewHarvest last year. My first use was to save a small live oak tree planted by the neighbor's third grader in a one acre field next to our house. Our town provides all our third graders with a sapling as part of the school's science program. The tree was planted and promptly ignored while his focus moved to sports and video games. As a result, the tree was not receiving sufficient water as it tried to establish itself in the Texas heat. The little sapling was just barely alive when I asked the neighbor if I could experiment with the Waterboxx. Since installation of the Waterboxx, the tree has made a remarkable recovery and has almost doubled in size. The only time I added any water (3.5 gallons) was during the initial installation. I have essentially also ignored it ever since. The Waterboxx is truly an amazing innovation. It works! Exactly as described in this book. Plus, The Waterboxx Gardener book by Dr. Auman has opened my eyes to its potential for our vegetable garden. The harsh summers take a toll on our garden (as well as me and my wife). Watering is a full time challenge from June through September. The insights provided in this book will expand our use of the Waterboxx from the trees to the vegetables.
