I pre-ordered this as soon as I knew it was being published, all on the strength of The Martian, which I loved. So now I can tell you that Sophomore Slump is a real thing. Artemis isn't a bad book, it's just not a great book. I'm not sure it's always a good book, but I'm up and down about that.As I was beginning it, The Housemate read me a highly critical review by the AV Club. Most of the review was about how the main character didn't feel like a woman. I felt that was relatively unimportant, that gender wasn't an issue in the story as far as I'd read, and honestly I still feel that way. Weir could have made his protagonist male and changed almost nothing about the narrative. Had this book been about women's issues, I might have felt short-changed, but as it is, this is a pretty standard thriller, and representation is way down on the list of things one expects from this genre.However, irony is ironic. When I picked the book up again after hearing the review, I found that it had been close to being right. Not spot-on, just close. None of the characters had any depth for me, mostly they were interchangeable plot devices. Again, that's standard fare in the genre, so I'm willing to shrug and let it go in spite of the fact that I know Weir can create dimensional characters. But what flummoxed me was that the action sequences were so dull. They were highly technical, and where that worked in The Martian, it does not work here.I found myself racing through those parts to get to the human interactions, which if they didn't have the depth I could have hoped for, were at least more interesting than all the tech stuff. I found myself thinking that someone told Weir that "people loved all that technical stuff in The Martian, so maybe you should do it again, and do more of it." Yeah that worked when it was a single man against the elements and ultimately against technology. But here? It's kind of flat. At least that's how it felt to me.So in the end, while I enjoyed parts of it, those parts proved greater than the whole, and I can't be super enthusiastic the way I was about The Martian. That makes me sad. It doesn't mean I won't read the next thing Andy Weir publishes, but I'm not going to be so quick to pre-order it next time.

At heart there's a fun little romp around a hypothetical moon base and a criminal conspiracy. That part is not so bad.My beefs with the novel are threefold:* The author cannot write a convincing woman, at least not from the woman's own perspective. I've never been a woman, but I have been a teenage boy, and I am pretty sure that adult, straight women spend less time thinking about breasts than a teenage boy. The narrator is obsessed.* The libertarian nuttery runs deep in this sucker. Laws against flammable materials are zealously enforced, but pedophilia is perfectly legal, selling drugs to minors is perfectly legal, and unions are basically just thugs who beat you up if you work without the union. (And yet, for some reason, the most skilled workers refuse to join the unions? because it would mean being paid less? who would join a union to make less money?)* Lastly, the economy makes no sense whatsoever. They use a company scrip for currency (in order to evade all the evil banksters on earth!), and the company scrip is "grams safely landed on the moon." Apparently a delivery boy makes 12,000 grams a month. A beer costs about 25 grams. At one point they disclose that a gram is roughly 1/6th of a dollar. Meanwhile, in the real world, it costs about $13 to get a single gram of material into LEO, to say nothing of a transfer to, or soft landing on, the moon. The entire plot hinges on exporting bulk fiberoptic cable from the moon to the earth at a fabulous profit, somehow? I don't know if the author has ever handled fiber optic cabling. It's not lightweight stuff.

Tourists flock there for the chance to spend their life's savings on a guided tour of the lunar surface-- which involves wondering about in a high tech hamster ball-- and sampling the local delicacy known as Gunk, a flavored algae no one voluntarily eats a second time. But for the full time residents, Artemis is a small town with the same problems as any community. It's the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. And everyone knows Jazz Bashara is up to no good.Jazz has a brilliant mind, but saw more fit to rebel against her traditional Muslim father than to apply it to her future. At 26, she finds herself the lunar equivalent of an errand girl, living in an apartment the literal size of a coffin, and smuggling contraband from earth just to make ends meet. She dreams of the day she'll have a home she can stand up in, and access to non-communal bathroom, but Artemis is expensive. There's a sharp divide between the haves and have-nots: those who can afford to have an earth standard of living shipped into city and those at the mercy of the natural restrictions of living on the moon.So when one of the wealthiest haves, a sketchy businessman who employs Jazz's smuggling skills on the regular, offers her a huge sum to take out a competing business, she takes him up on it. What starts as a complicated, but doable, task quickly spirals out of control. Jazz soon finds herself in the cross hairs of some powerful enemies and discovers Artemis's dirty secrets.Any expectations I had for this book were purely speculative, because, unlike most of the rest of the world, I have not read The Martian or seen the movie. That said, I was surprised 1/3 of the way through to realize I was reading a lightweight heist novel with some heavy handed commentary on wealth inequality. Yes, it's set on the moon, and the author does not let you forget it, but it's the backdrop to the real issue: Jazz needs money.One of the largest problems of this book is Jazz herself. She's supposed to be a grown woman, but she narrates like a teenage boy. She's as obsessed with her sex life as everyone else in Artemis seems to be, and I have to wonder if author Andy Weir has ever met a woman before. She's also really chatty and familiar with the audience in a way that grates over time:"Getting the contraband to Artemis... well, that's another story. More on that later.""Okay, you can stop pretending you know what a niqab is."The whole book has a very YA vibe to it. It's lightweight and the heist gets a bit ridiculous. I mean, they plan out every detail on an ipad-like device that their enemies have proven to be able to hack, but I digress. Between chapters, we get letters between Jazz and her earth penpal that date back to when they are children, but this has little relevance to the story at large and often feels like filler. And we get moments that read like a bad cable movie:"He's right, Dad. I am an jerk. But Artemis needs a jerk right now and I got drafted."Artemis has it's moments. It's fast paced and often fun. The descriptions of the moon colony, and what life might be like were anyone to attempt settling it, are interesting. But if you're expecting anything more of this than a forgettable caper tale, you might be disappointed.

“Welder’s Handbook” is a good introductory text to basic welding. Yes, it does not have an endless amount of detail on most welding processes. And yes, in order to actually weld, you’ll have to actually weld. But reading this book first, and then getting basic instruction from someone who knows how to perform the type of welding you’re interested in, will get you off the ground very effectively.The author, Richard Finch, who has been welding for decades, arranges the book by all the basic topics. He covers equipment, safety basics and metal basics, along with cleaning and fitting. He discusses oxyacetylene welding (and cutting) in considerable detail, using oxy welding to communicate basics of creating a weld pool, heating metal, and so forth. Later chapters cover arc (“stick”) welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, plasma cutting, and special processes. Within each chapter Finch covers techniques as they apply to the welding of different metals. He then suggests some projects and additional references for further reading. That’s it. Nothing fancy, and not a lot of wasted words.Would I pay $150 for this—the cost for the much more voluminous “Welding Processes And Applications,” frequently used as a textbook? No. But I’d happily pay $10 or $15 for this, and did. And, with some minimal instruction and practice, I can weld—casually, not professionally. If I practiced more, I’d weld better, and this book helped my confidence level in getting started. For the home handyman, that’s usually all one needs.

A more descriptive title might be "Metal Fabricator's Handbook".Focus upon race car fabrication: high strength but light duty and light weight structure.Fair survey of the common techniques of manual and production.Definitely add to hobbyist and DIY library.

As a beginner welder, this book was a life saver! I learned so much and the book was hard to put down, from start to finish! I cannot say anything negative on this product! It was an easy read, full of amazing information, and I'm grateful it was recommended to us by our welding instructor.

This is a 2007 update of Finch's 1997 classic by the same name. It is also important to note that this is the 3rd Edition of this book, which says a lot about the "staying power" of information in the book and Mr. Finch's ability to convey the knowledge he has. I have know of Richard Finch, his writings, and works for over 30 years now (more from the experimental aviation movement than anything else) & have found him to be an authority on the topics for which he writes. Not surprising since he is both a trained engineer and certified welder. The book is described as a "guide" & that is the best way to think about it. It is not so much a "how to" text as a text that lets the novice know what is possible now in the world of metal fabrication, and the amateur welder with limited experience (or only knowledge of one method of welding) be able to self-transition into the other methods of welding. There are numerous very clear, crisp and explanatory photos, as well as diagrams & charts with the only drawback being that they are all in B&W. Of additional value, the are frequent photos of completed projects/jobs that are reference in the text - including a SCCA race car Mr. Finch campaigned which had a tube frame that was completely joined only by gas brazing (Page 85). The general thrust of the book is toward automotive applications, but there are also examples from aviation and even marine fabrication. He includes a chapter on various useful smallish projects that can be used to practice one's welding skills. Though this is now a 10 year old edition, it is my understanding that Mr. Finch has passed and as such we can't expect any new edition coming out, though this book was usually updated about every 10 years. While the mention of recent advances in welding will become dated, much of the other information in the book gained by Mr. Finch over the course of his career will become more valuable, such as when to use brazing in auto restoration (especially if you don't have a donor car to cannibalize) - see page 80-81. He also covers several other potentially "lost techniques" such as Oxyhydrogen welding of aluminum, something that may be of interest to some readers who are already proficient with gas & don't want to dish out money for a MIG welder. If you have any interest in welding, buying this book will not be a waste of time or money & it will be a reference you will keep for quite some time in your welding library - I know I have all three editions and intend to keep them all for the rest of my time in welding! RIP Richard Finch.

Even though this book is called "dual sport" its perfect for Adventure riders. Its packed with great information not just on riding technique, but understanding things like tire wear, how dual sport tires are rated, how to fix a flat in the field, what kind of tools to bring, etc. I can't recommend this text enough for anyone that is thinking of getting into Adventure Riding. I read the book thoroughly, followed Carl's advice, and completed my bucket list of riding White Rim Trail in Utah over two days (that's me in the photo). All within less than a year of riding off-pavement, and not having ridden a motorcycle in almost two decades. Carl, can't thank you enough!

Essential Guide to Dual Sport MotorcyclingAfter reading Adventure Riding Techniques, I still wanted to learn more about riding on dirt and other surfaces to improve my technique with motorcycles on tarmac. I found Dual Sport Motorcycling to be heavy on text and detailed information, with less emphasis on photographs. Depending on the tread compound, it may be suited for track days or cruising just like high performance summer tires. Racing slicks will have to be warmed first, not unlike racing slicks used for Formula 1 or professional racing. As you progress towards dual sport tires, they become akin to the all-terrain tires used on trucks. As you progress towards knobby motorcross tires, they resemble the swamp/mud tires used on trucks.Dual Sport Motorcycling also has a section of proper suspension settings, but it isn't as thorough as dedicated books like Motorcycle Suspension Bible or Sportbike Suspension Tuning. There are exercises that teach drifting, but it is not as easy to follow as the ones taught in Adventure Riding Techniques. The two common methods of initiating a drift/slide are similar to fundamentals of drifting in cars: you can either use the rear brakes or clutch.If you are interested in the logistics of dual sport motorcycling, this is the book to get. If you are more focused on riding techniques, buy Adventure Riding Techniques.Overall: 4/5 stars, excellent guide to learning more riding skills but not as good as Adventure Riding Techniques.

There is a reason there are no other books directly related to dual sport motorcycling: this book has it all.I enjoyed the very full discussions on gear, tires, and riding techniques. The suspension tuning section glossed over the topic too briefly in my opinion.My major nitpick with the book: the information on specific bikes in the section on choosing one is too general, hence not very useful. The mainstream motorcycle magazines still totally ignore the growing small dual sport market, and readers don't often find reviews of those bikes at all, much less by someone using them as intended. The author could fill a niche here, and periodically release revised versions of the book.The book is fairly complete and gives a new off-road rider good guidance on getting started, as long as he or she has already determined what bike they'll choose.

Great read, but I am also a big Dual Sport fan, so I might be a little biased. :) The only slow parts of the book, for me, were the parts on riding techniques. I have always felt that technique can only really been taught by feel on a motorcycle, not through text, but the author gave it a good shot, and more experienced riders will understand what he's getting at. Overall great book for Dual Sporting beginners, and a pretty nice knowledge vault for veteran DS riders.

A really complete guide to the dual sport world. Before I buy it, I didn't have enough knowledge to take an informed decision about buying a dual sport. The book starts as a pleasant introduction with some aspects that any rider should have experienced. Later it goes deeper on details and technical aspects that everyone should know about these kind of bikes. The book is well structured and thought for a begginer - intermediate audience, so anyone can take this book as a reference.One of the chapters I loved the most was the one that talks about "Buying a dual sport". Before this reading I was planning to aquire a suzuki DR 650. Now I know that a DR 200 will match exactly my needs. Great reading and a must-have

I think this was the first book about motorcycling I bought, right after getting my first bike (a KLR650). I'd recommend it to any beginners, as it's got a lot of tips about riding and gear and maintenance as well as some inspiring ideas.

Some were great fun and others ended in a lot of tears. After all this exploration I decided that the answer was not to be found out there in the world. That perhaps I had been carrying it all along, somewhere deep inside. I became fascinated as to how I managed to find success in many different fields, whilst also failing so dramatically in other aspects of my life. I became curious as to how I had achieved all that I had set out to whilst somehow building a life that made me miserable and suicidal. Shouldn't doing what you want make you happy?! Soon, I became enthralled by all the positive and negative transformations I'd made with my physical and mental health and I took the time to read widely, enroll in courses and learn the established techniques of personal mastery. And it was only then that it dawned on me. Every transformation I'd made, for example from a morbid 320lbs to a healthy 180lbs or from a shy child in school to popstar performing to 1400 people, had been the same.That the steps used to get out of somewhere we aren't sure we want to be anymore, and eventually arrive at a place we never want to leave are always the same.So I spent a year working on a framework for transformation and applied it to my life as I went along. The impact was staggering: I discovered what I was meant to do with my life and finally understood my purpose. I saved relationships and friendships by resolving personal issues.I went from a diet of high fat, dairy and carbs to one that is almost entirely plant based. I overcame alcoholism and addiction.I escaped the rat race and now live the life I've always dreamed ofI found peace living on my own terms.I chose happiness, love and joy. So naturally, I had many people ask me what my secret was. And that, my friends, is why I wrote this book.Â

Bought this for my 4 year old son that is obsessed with dinosaurs. He really enjoyed it. This book is set after the events of Jurassic World and talks about the many other Hybrid Dinosaurs that were created besides the Indominous Rex. It's not told in a Narative story style, but rather presents factoids about each individual Hybrid including which dinos and DNA were used to create them. My son really likes creating Hybrids in his Lego Jurassic World game, so I thought this book would be to his liking and he enjoyed it. Also comes with two sheets of tear out card stock Hybrid Dino Cards.

On the heels of the park closing, comes this little gem of a book detailing some, not all of Dr. Wu's geneticly changed dinosaurs. Strange indeed are the creatures he came up with. A delightful children's book, I recommend it to all parents of dino loving kids.

Very nice! Maybe spoilers for JP 5? Awesome pictures and detail! Wouldn't want to cross paths with any of these things.

This book is pretty entertaining, but it is very short and easy to read. My 10 yr old was disappointed because he read it in 2 minutes. Another bad thing about this is that it showed a image of a spinoraptor while claiming that it was a spinosaurus. Then on the size chart, it showed the spinoraptor to be 60 feet long, which the true fact is that a spinoraptor is really the size of a large Utahraptor.

Son loved this for his birthday.
