From the Author

Day trading is not gambling. It's not an online poker game. To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere. At the beginning of my trading career, a pharmaceutical company announced some positive results for one of its drugs and its stock jumped from $1 to over $55 in just two days. Two days! I was a beginner at the time. I was the amateur. I purchased 1,000 shares at $4 and sold them at over $10. On my very first beginner trade, I made $6,000 in a matter of minutes. It was pure luck. I honestly had no idea what I was doing. Within a few weeks I had lost that entire $6,000 by making mistakes in other trades. I was lucky. My first stupid trade was my lucky one. Other people are not so lucky. For many, their first mistake is their last trade because in just a few minutes, in one simple trade, they lose all of the money they had worked so hard for. With their account at zero, they walk away from day trading. As a new day trader you should never lose sight of the fact that you are competing with professional traders on Wall Street and other experienced traders around the world who are very serious, highly equipped with advanced education and tools, and most importantly, committed to making money.Day trading is not gambling or a hobby. You must approach trading very, very seriously. As such, I wake up early, go for a run, take a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, and fire up my trading station before the markets open in New York. I am awake. I am alert. I am motivated when I sit down and start working on the list of stocks I will watch that day. This morning routine has tremendously helped my mental preparation for coming into the market. Whatever your routine is, starting the morning in a similar fashion will pay invaluable dividends.Rolling out of bed and throwing water on your face 15 minutes before the opening bell just does not give you sufficient time to be prepared for the market's opening. Sitting at your computer in your pajamas or underwear does not put you in the right mindset to attack the market. I know. I've experienced all of these scenarios. In How to Day Trade for a Living, I will show you how you too can take control over your life and have success in day trading on the stock market. I love teaching. It's my passion. In this book, I use simple and easy to understand words to explain the strategies and concepts you need to know to launch yourself into day trading on the stock market. This book is definitely NOT a difficult, technical, hard to understand, complicated and complex guide to the stock market. It's concise. It's practical. It's written for everyone. You can learn how to beat Wall Street at its own game. I invite you to join me in the world of day trading. I'm a real person who you can connect with. I'm not just a photograph here on the Amazon site. I love what I do. You can follow my blog post under Author Updates on my Author page on Amazon. It's honest. You'll see I lose some days. You can read the reviews of my book. I know you will learn much about day trading and the stock market from studying my book. You can join at no cost and with no obligation my community of day traders at vancouver-traders.com. You can ask us questions. Practical, hands-on knowledge. That's How to Day Trade for a Living.

#755 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I read the first edition of this book couple of years ago and I liked the contents. What I liked most about the book was its length. The first edition was short and to the point. So when a friend showed interest in trading I gave him my copy as a gift. I went ahead and ordered the most recent edition because I wanted to have a copy in my library. The most recent edition is thicker (not thick enough to justify the price increase from $8 to $30), but the new contents are mostly fluff, and it has more self-promotion of the author's website and trading chatroom than the first edition. I had noticed this self-promotion in the first edition, but it didn't bother me because the chat room was free for everyone to join. Then suddenly the author started to charge to join the chatroom ($29/mo) and most recently $99/mo. The $99 membership does not even include access to his trade-ideas scanner anymore (which I thought was the most valuable part of the room). So the once humble sounding Dr. Aziz (he likes to talk about his PhD) fell in the same trap as con men like Ross Cameron from Warrior Trading and others who pretend to be helping you, but in reality are only promoting their business. Also, remember that you can't day trade like Dr. Aziz unless you have at least $25,000 in your trading account, which is not realistic nor recommended for beginners. I've been swing trading for over a decade and only in recent years I started to day trade. My biggest take from this book was the potential benefits of a high frequency trading platform such as DAS. Now I use DAS to trade options which I think is the smarter way to day trade. So if you want my advice for day trading follow these steps:1. Go ahead and give Dr. Aziz PhD the $30 for the book. The contents are not bad for beginners. Focus mostly on technical analysis and patterns.2. Don't fall for his chatroom and membership trap. Instead, buy a 3 or 6-month prepaid level 2 simulator account (with options) directly from DAS for $450 or $900.3. Watch the DAS tutorials on YouTube and practice trading with options for 3 to 6 months. If you need help with options, check out Sky View Trading Options videos on YouTube.4. Find good trade setups in highly liquid stocks such as AMZN, GOOG, BABA, etc. Unlike common shares (what Aziz PhD trades), options trading is best with mega caps stocks because there is little spread. Trade them everyday for 3-6 months and when you can win consistently, open an account and trade with real money. Why trade options? With options you don’t have to risk too much capital. You certainly don’t need to have $25k and a margin account to make a living from trading. I’ll give you an example. When Aziz PhD takes a trade, he risks anywhere between 30-100k of capital (some of his own and some borrowed money), to make about $1000. I use these numbers because I’ve seen his trades. With options, you can make the same amount of money with far less capital ($2k, or so). Of course, just as you can make that kind of money easily, you can lose it easily on a bad trade. But would you rather blow up a 25k account or a 2k account?Whether you trade common shares or options, you must practice first. That’s why a simulator account is highly recommended. Also remember that you must be willing to lose money before you can make money. Every successful trader has blown up an account at some point (including myself or even Aziz). So don’t be afraid to lose, just don’t lose it to bogus memberships and chatroom subscriptions. You are basically paying for their losing trades. It is funny, because when Aziz’s chatroom was free, he used to say he doesn’t need the membership money. Not sure what happened along the way. Good luck everyone and happy trading! If you have any questions, feel free to ask below this review.

This was my first read on Day Trading. Five books later (author's: Benjamin Graham, William O'Neil, Warren Buffet, Toni Turner, Michelle Cagan), I came back to read it (Aziz's book) again... I, of course, plan on reading many more, but Aziz's book will hold a spot on the shelf as a permanent reference for years to come. Not only, because it's a very effective read, but also due to the author's candor, and willingness to invest time in helping fellow traders. The later being an invaluable characteristic of this particular author...Initially (similar to what I read in one of the few negative reviews on this book), I wasn't sure if the book was designed to help as a stand-alone text, or if it's sole purpose was to facilitate a gateway for more revenue streams (for Aziz) down the road. In other words -- the information seemed useful, but I wasn't sure OF the author's genuine intentions (to write a great book, versus suck people in for long-term profits). Why such feelings you ask??? Aziz offers his readers a few recommendations relative to "tools of the trade," and given this was my first experience with this sort of text -- I was caught off guard by some of what felt like self-promotion from within...But then I read the other books (author's mentioned above) and EVERY one of them (also) included some sort of odd-feeling, hard to decipher, "tool(s)" of self-promotion. Benjamin Graham's book seems to prefer certain brokers (and funds) over others, but nothing near as bad as William O'Neil's book. Yup, as "good" as CANSLIM has (apparently) proven itself over the years, IBD not only sucked me in -- but they continue to annoy the heck out of me -- AS A PAID SUBSCRIBER -- by constantly inundating me with ads... So much so, that I'm considering cancelling my subscription. Even Toni Turner's book, which in all honesty -- was probably one of my favorite books to ever read (she is a very good writer) -- had its fair share of "go visit my website for additional tools of the trade..." type recommendations... Her "tools," by the way, are actually pretty useful...My point though, is this: Though these authors (obviously) have something to gain by increasing their follower-ship, they are also simultaneously recommending invaluable resources for ANY "trader" genuinely interested in succeeding in this business. Aziz, in particular, recommends his chat-room, DAS Trader, and a couple of stock screeners (depending on your specific needs). He has also put together a handful of "lessons," where he walks you through some of the intricacies of the trading platform, and the methodology in his book (I'm in the series now).. Yes, you read that right -- The actual author of the book will sit down with you and help clear anything up relative to what you read from his text (and beyond). He has already responded, in a timely manner, to EVERY email I've sent, and his responses always offer nuggets of value. Anyways.... I've read Aziz's book twice now, and I can tell you -- without a doubt -- that his advice is solid. I've come to realize that what initially seemed like a sales pitch (via the texts of all authors mentioned), actually proves to be very solid advice. Believe it, or not, the guy (Aziz) would be doing his readers a disservice if he didn't recommend (and/or offer) tools for success...My experiences so far:Chat Room: When I first stumbled into his chatroom, I was caught off guard. I think I was expecting some sort of forum-based venue, where newbie's like me could browse topics of interest, ask redundant questions, and receive "platinum" membership status for posting 1 billion times... I literally checked in one day, hung around for a couple of hours, then checked out......and I never thought I'd go back... Then I read the books referenced above, realized that trader chat rooms aren't synonymous with forums of your favorite hobby, and found myself back in the very same room I gave zero thought to a few weeks prior. And that said -- I imagine I'll probably be a member of the chat room for a very long time to come... If for no other reason, you get to watch Aziz actually work every morning, ask questions along the way, and even view his P&L statements for the day. It's like shadowing a Doctor, then seeing the amount on his paystub at the end of the week! And when he (Aziz) loses money on the day, it speaks volumes toward: 1) Everybody is capable of failing, and even a professional trader has risk/reward factors to consider, and 2) he's not pretending to have a "secret sauce" that will guarantee billions of dollars overnight! He's a regular guy, like you and me, who has CHOSEN to put the time and effort into trading successfully; and based on what I'm seeing daily -- he is successful..The simulator: The simulator he recommends is on a system called DAS, and regardless of how much research you do, you'll always come back to DAS being the 'go-to' option for day-traders worldwide. I have actually signed up with a simulator account with DAS, and I cannot thank Aziz enough for the recommendation. To be honest, I never imagined I'd put forth any sort of tangible effort into a simulator (it was "beneath me"), but now that I have the experience -- I'm soooooooo glad that I humbled myself, and took his advice! There's no doubt in my mind, that had I just gone into this cold turkey, I'd be a few thousand dollars (okay...maybe a lot more!) in the red already. Not, because I can't identify proper set-ups (though that takes experience too), but just getting used to the way things work (trading platforms, various brokers, etc.) are lessons in themselves... And believe me --- "mastering" the technical side of trading may seem elementary while perusing various texts on the topic, but when you're actually sitting at a desk, looking at stocks for hours on end -- suddenly the reality that trading isn't so cut and dry comes to light. For example: you might be a prodigy when it comes to recognizing set-ups, but where/how are you going to find relevant, and trade-able stocks for the day??? Maybe reading Aziz's book, and doing so humbly (unlike my first read) would be a good start...? I digress...Last, but not least -- the book: Again, I've read multiple alternate texts on the topic now, and without question -- Aziz's book is straight to the point, easy to read, and most importantly -- EFFECTIVE in helping the reader understand what sort of FOUNDATION will be necessary to succeed as a day-trader. Of course there is a lot more to discuss than what he brings up in the slightly over 100 page book, but the brevity of the text in no way undermines the content of the messaging. That said, I've supplemented my education with a handful of other options, and guess what?? They all, in essence, say the same thing, lol... One of them, however (Aziz) is a LOT shorter, to the point, and EASY to read... Okay, okay....there are, in fact, subtle differences, and of course -- with more pages comes more fruit -- but Aziz says what needs to be said, and provides his readers with a legitimate foundation to build upon. I would also argue that Aziz cuts a lot of unnecessary fluff, and focuses on providing advice that actually works; rather than just including pages of theory in an attempt to convince us of his acumen. He provides step-by-step templates on how to find stocks, how to trade stocks, what to look for, etc... And, again -- he does a great job at leaving the clutter out, so you can focus on the fundamentals...I wouldn't recommend taking this book, memorizing it, and never reading another again...., but I would HIGHLY recommend it to any trader looking to dip his toes in the world of day-trading. I came into this with a big ego, lots of prior education, and a feeling of invincibility. I'm now thankful that Aziz made it a point to help guys like me consider the "big picture" ---- while holding our hand(s) along the journey ---- before my accounts were wiped away like an open bag of leaves on a gusty day!Take it from a guy who isn't a big fan of online reviews: Aziz gets 5 stars...read the book...you'll be glad you did...

I'm a very experienced day trader of over 20 years. With the coming of HFT and other changes, it has been necessary to adjust my methodology. Scanning for stocks in play and trading unknown stocks is an approach I have resisted for my entire career but I think I have to go there now. I won't do it without a solid method/plan and a hard set of rules. I'm not too proud to look at a "beginner" book to figure out how to do this. This book is exceptional. It gave me what I wanted and I will build on the information using what I already know. The author is an engineer and being of a methodical/mechanical mindset myself, I was happy with the way he laid it all out. There is also good information on other topics for real beginners such as the importance of risk management, emotional control which are important.I will recommend this book to people who ask me how to begin day trading.

this is not a beginner's guide, so you need some working knowledge of Scala and spark beforehand. and will lay a good foundation for this book. The target reader is spark programmer, all the content focuses on how to write high performance spark code, especially how to use the spark core and spark SQL API. there is nothing about how to admin or configure a spark cluster. In this latter area, one can try . Having that said, this book have done a great job in explaining the nuances of writing spark code. highly recommended.

The authors state in their preface that "this book is intended for those who have some working knowledge of Spark, and may be difficult to understand for those with little or no experience with Spark or distributed computing", that they "expect this text will be most useful to those who care about optimizing repeated queries in production, rather than to those who are doing primarily exploratory work", and that they "want to help our readers ask questions such as 'How is my data distributed?', 'Is it skewed?', 'What is the range of values in a column?', and 'How do we expect a given value to group?' and then apply the answers to those questions to the logic of their Spark queries."This book is the second of three related books that I've had the chance to work through over the past few months, in the following order: "Spark: The Definitive Guide" (2018), "High Performance Spark: Best Practices for Scaling and Optimizing Apache Spark" (2017), and "Practical Hive: A Guide to Hadoop's Data Warehouse System" (2016). If you are new to Apache Spark, these three texts will help enable your going in the right direction, although keep in mind that the related tech stack is evolving and you will obviously need to supplement this material with web documentation and developer forums, as well as to get hands-on with the tooling. Reading these books in opposite order of publication date enabled exposure to more current material sooner rather than later, but this was largely just a coincidence.Keep in mind one of the initial assertions of the authors that "this book was created using the Spark 2.0.1 APIs, but much of the code will work in earlier versions of Spark as well. In places where this is not the case we have attempted to call that out". As Spark 2.4.0 was just released in November 2018, you will find that some of the material provided here is either outdated or seen to be commonplace with the newest aforementioned Spark text. The unfortunate dilemma is that a book specifically focusing on Spark performance simply isn't available outside of what the authors provide here, so you will need to account for differences across versions, especially in the several instances where the authors provide workarounds that they warn are likely not to provide long term viability.Unlike "Spark: The Definitive Guide", which provides Python, Scala, and Spark SQL code, readers should be aware that the bulk of code provided in this book is Scala, "simply in the interest of time and space", because "it is the belief of the authors that 'serious' performant Spark development is most easily achieved in Scala", and while "these reasons are very specific to using Spark with Scala, there are many more general arguments for (and against) Scala's applications in other contexts." As the authors further state their case, they provide tips for learning Scala alongside additional arguments for picking up the language: "to be a Spark expert you have to learn a little Scala anyway", "the Spark Scala API is easier to use than the Java API", and "Scala is more performant than Python."This densely written book of slightly over 300 pages in length is broken down into 10 chapters and an appendix: (1) "Introduction to High Performance Spark", (2) "How Spark Works", (3) "DataFrames, Datasets, and Spark SQL", (4) "Joins (SQL and Core)", (5) "Effective Transformations", (6) "Working with Key/Value Data", (7) "Going Beyond Scala", (8) "Testing and Validation", (9) "Spark MLlib and ML", (10) "Spark Components and Packages", and an appendix on "Tuning, Debugging, and Other Things Developers Like to Pretend Don't Exist". While the chapters aren't provided in the context of broader sections, chapters 1 and 2 are essentially an introduction, and chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 provide the bulk of the content (chapter 8 should likely join these other 4 chapters, as testing and validation are a likely follow-up to much of what is discussed. As far as the remaining 3 chapters are concerned, while chapter 7 would likely provide value as a last chapter, chapters 9 and 10 seem a bit misplaced, with chapter 10 seemingly better suited for an appendix alongside the one appendix provided. The diagrams in chapters 3 through 6 are especially well done, and supplement the discussions very well. While the diagrams in chapters 1 and 2 are beneficial, these can be largely found in the documentation (perhaps with the exception of the diagrams provided in the section entitled "The Anatomy of a Spark Job"). For example, the diagram in chapter 3 on Spark SQL windowing (which personally helped supplement the cursory explanation in "Spark: The Definitive Guide"), the diagrams in chapter 4 on joins, the diagrams in chapter 5 on narrow versus wide dependencies between partitions and caching versus checkpointing, and the diagrams in chapter 6 on GroupByKey (although I found one of several errors here) and SortByKey.The appendix is beneficial to the point that it could likely have been expanded and included in the body of the text, possibly following the introductory chapters, because the discussion here is all about what one can do outside one's application code (what the bulk of this book is essentially about). Topics covered here are broken down into sections on "Spark Tuning and Cluster Sizing", "Basic Spark Core Settings: How Many Resources to Allocate to the Spark Application?", "Serialization Options", and "Some Additional Debugging Techniques". Highly recommended text for anyone looking to broaden their understanding of the hows and whys behind optimizing Spark.

much improved compared with 1st edition, more elaboration on joining datasets. good to explain in one language.

This book clarifies lots of my questions on Spark. I especially appreciate the walk through joins.

If you're a real hacker, you'll love this book. If you're not, and you would like to be, you'll find it frustrating, but if you stick with it, you will grow as a professional. If you're not, and you know you never will be, I suggest you start working on a nursing, phlebotomy or massage therapy certifation before people in the first two groups figure out how to automate your job.

Not worth it. Online Spark documentation is probably more helpful. Important concepts like Executors, Jobs, Stages, Cluster etc are not very well explained. You'll start as beginner and stay beginner. May be helpful if you are very new to Spark, but then I would recommend official documentation should be enough to get familiar.

Overall, I thought this was a very good book. It strikes a good balance between detailed instruction and depth and being a guidebook, not an instruction manual. It's the usual high quality that I've come to expect from O'Reilly, and I feel much more confident about my understanding of Spark, both as a user and of the inner workings.Much of the book is written with a focus on performance. There's some discussion of statistical concepts, but the book is clearly aimed at helping the reader use Spark in a resource-efficient manner (which makes a lot of sense, given that Spark comes into play when you're tackling large data sets).Virtually all of the code examples are written in Scala. When I began reading, my Scala abilities were fairly limited, but the authors do a good job of parsing and commenting on the code such that I now feel much stronger in Scala, as well. They do have a chapter that discusses using Python and Java (including JVM), but most of the book is presented through Scala. My one complaint about this book is that it's a bit heavy on the code. It's possible that it's necessary, but I ended up skimming most of the coding examples, and it made for some tedious reading at times. Then again, there were several examples that I scrutinized closely, and having thorough examples did help me learn quite a bit of Scala.

This book is heavily Scala centric and for beginners the only takeaway should be that you should be fairly comfortable with Scala If you hope to have a "Spark" Centered carrear. If you are in the big data / Warehouse space with Spark in the center of action, I highly recommend this book. It focuses heavily on all areas of Performance. You can keep this book handy as a reference guide as well.Good job.

I really, really wanted to love this autobiography, but really it feels incomplete. I pre-ordered it 10 seconds after I saw it was announced and waited impaitently for it to be released. I still think Bruce is one of the most interesting and fascinating people in the world, but this book was a frustrating letdown. My main complaint with the book is that Bruce never really goes into any detail about anything. Everything he discusses always feel like a lead in to a deeper discussion that never happens. I can't even count the number of times I turned the page expecting him to explain his thoughts or feelings or continue on a line of thought only for the next sentence to be a new topic. Its a series of events that happen and people he meets but he never goes much beyond that. What is even more frustrating is that the first quarter of the book wasn't like that. He starts out the book explaining his childhood and schooling and this is the best part of the book. Once he gets past his years in college and into Iron Maiden the book really starts to fall apart. For someone who was in a band with 5-6 other people for nearly 30 years, he really has next to nothing to say about them. He touches on his relationship with Steve Harris a little bit, but it feels brief and incomplete. He shares a few anecdotes about Nicko McBain and a few of the other bandmates but they are all in passing and never in much detail.Once his autobiography gets to the Iron Maiden era it really becomes a memoir of his signing, fencing, and flying career. While those things are interesting and I expected him to go into detail of them it all still feels superficial. It is hard to say it is an autobiography. He never mentions family, and even states in the afterword that he chose not to include them when setting out to write the book. I can understand a person wanting to have a private life, but when you are selling an autobiography. It feels odd when describing your life's events they all occur in the absence of family. His cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery is an event that I can't imagine going through alone. Yet the way he writes it you would think it was only him and his doctors.Would I recommend the book? Yes, I guess so if your are a Maiden fan or a fan of his solo work. Of the autobiographies I have read this is one of the poorer ones that i have ready though.

There are few “rock stars” I find interesting enough to invest time and money in reading about their personal lives. My interest begins and ends with their music. Bruce Dickinson is a fascinating exception.Lead singer for the worldwide phenomenon Iron Maiden, competitive world-class fencer, airline captain, novelist, beer entrepreneur, screenwriter: Bruce Dickinson is no ordinary rock star. With all his varied pursuits and his 30+ years with Iron Maiden, I was eager to get more of the details and background of this interesting life.Sad to say, though, that as good as the book is -- and it is a fun read -- Dickinson leaves us wanting more, as he glosses over so much. There’s certainly not enough about Maiden, and next to nothing about his family or mates. I can understand Dickinson wanting to keep a certain amount of his life private, but then this is an autobiography. Leaving out current bandmate squabbles, though, and I assume there are some, was a good idea. Tell-all books are the ruin of many a band. There is a great gallery of photos included, and I particularly enjoyed the chapters detailing his aviation exploits, as well as his devotion to the art of fencing. As a fan of Iron Maiden, I could not pass it up. I just wish there’d been more.

For years I’ve had a guilty secret. When asked about my musical tastes I would say, “Pretty eclectic, everything from Mozart…” (an expected response) “to… Maiden!” (Usually greeted with some variant of “WTF”). But it’s true: I’ve been a dyed in the wool Iron Maiden fan since the early 1980s. And I followed Bruce when he branched out on his own. So I was a bit curious when I heard about this book. But why? I am not much interested another tedious “tell all,” book, most “facts” are there for all to see, and I don’t need the vicarious pleasure of living through the experiences of a spoilt rock star.Well, this is no standard autobiography. It’s a roughly chronological collection of anecdotes by a man who has crammed more into his sixty some years than a dozen other people. He has enormous energy and there aren’t many of us who even try to master half as many things as he has. Some of his stories are hilarious and had me laughing so hard that I was gasping for air. Which, I learned from Bruce, probably means that I should have been doing more exercises to improve my breathing. On the other hand, there are also some poignant moments, like his observations during and after performing in a war zone in the former Yugoslavia. And I did not expect him to wax lyrical about the theater of the mind, or the kind of enlightenment that can emerge from the relationship between a master and a pupil.Yes, of course, he projects an ego the size of Vesuvius. But he is the vertically challenged front man of the world’s biggest rock band. Blushing wall flower would not cut it. And Bruce would probably admit that at times he has been a bit of an onanist. He evidently has a quick wit that’s probably a shade too quick for some of the people he’s rubbed up against. And much as he might try camouflage himself, it’s also pretty clear that he is sensitive, intelligent and insightful. Sorry Bruce, you’re rumbled.Whether he meant to or not, he has actually done a great service by giving an unflinching description of his triumph over the great taboo of our time: cancer. It will be worth it if he inspires just one more person not to give up.It’s almost a throw away point in the book, but he also talks something else that I am going to pick up on another time: how switching hands - from a righty to a south paw - revolutionized his fencing. There are an awful lot of people whose lives have been changed by helping them to rebalance their brains. In all the book is a celebration of a life well lived, by someone born poor and disadvantaged, but who decided to use his energy, wits and talent to just have a go: to explore, take some risks, to drink deep of life, and to leave something behind.Very highly recommended.Richard G. Petty, MD, author of Healing, Meaning and Purpose: The Magical Power of the Emerging Laws of Life
