Mountain lions, also known as cougars, pumas, or panthers, are probably the most elusive large animals on the continent. Even some wildlife photographers have never seen a wild mountain lion. In the winter of 1999 a mother lion with three large cubs moved into a den on Miller Butte, above the largest concentration of wintering elk in North America. Mangelsen, a well-known wildlife photographer and author of an acclaimed book about polar bears (Polar Dance, 1997), lives close by, and could document the family of lions during the 42 days they were present. Two things stand out from the photographs: first, the lions are so superbly camouflaged that even in photographs taken with tremendous magnification they can be difficult to spot; and, second, they are so shaggy in their thick winter coats that they remind the viewer of enormous Persian cats. Wolves, elk, and coyotes are also featured, and Blessley's impassioned plea for understanding and tolerance of the predators in our midst offers a nice addition to the recounting of the lion family's stay. Wildlife photographer, Tom Mangelsen, and writer Cara Shea Blessley have teamed up to write a wonderful book about the winter of 1999 when a mother mountain lion moved her three kittens to a den near Jackson, Wyoming. Thousands of people flocked to see and photography this once in a lifetime event, including Mangelsen, who took hundreds of photos. This is a touching account of the precarious life of these big cats. After the mother moved her kittens, they would be in the area where hunting was allowed. We can only hope they survived.

Great book though print has started to fade in my copy. They tell the story of these Wyoming Mountain lions perfectly with script and photos.

The book was an excellent read, but could be difficult for those with little or nobackground on the Impressionists or Paris during the time that they painted.The book moves quickly, but seamlessly from painter to painter.It also talks about the early friendships, exchange of ideas, and the eventual fallingout of some of the painters. Money and patronage, along with the hope of obtainingrecognition of the Salon, thereby getting official recognition for their work and thepossibility of a larger group of monied collectors.The book goes into some detail about the personal struggles of various Impressionists whocame from wealthy families, but because of their work or social relationships were either estrangedfrom, or grudgingly given a stipend.Finally, the book gives credit to early collectors and the struggle to bring the Impressionist workto America, which strangely, Monet opposed.This book is well researched and goes into topics that other books on the subject often leave out.

Wife loves this book! The author goes beyond the paintings & the names of the painters, and looks at - as the title so aptly defines - 'the private lives of the impressionists', and how that played out when they painted. Not a book for those just wanting the same ol pretty paintings, but one that will enrich one's understanding of Impressionism, and provide insight into why the painter did what they did. . .

It must have been a monumental undertaking to write a group biography of these incredibly engaging artists ( Manet, Renoir, Pissarro, Monet, Degas, Cezanne, Morisot ) and to be able to distill the essential characters of all of them in a single volume. That is the strength of this book. Sue Roe not only provides just the right amount of detail about each of the artists that comprised the original group of Impressionists individually but is able to synthesize their stories so that a complete image of how they influenced one another and related to each other emerges in these pages.The personal family lives, financial woes and interpersonal conflicts and alliances are well told and the reader is brought into the world in which these artists first emerged and worked in an incredibly vivid manor.There are of course the paintings themselves and a book that would do justice to the entire catalogue that these prolific painters produced would by necessity be volumes long. Here I believe the author made sacrifices to ensure the narrative of the group biography remained readable and accessible. In my opinion she succeeded brilliantly. I thoroughly enjoyed this and found it quite enlightening in many respects.

Recently I had to give a talk for my women's club. and I didn't want to just repeat all the common things that artists know about impressionists. And this book was very helpful and was filled with info not widely known about them. And about France during the mid 19th century. Plusses were historical insights into people and events affecting the lives of the impressionists. I REALLY liked the book and it was easy to understand and not at all like a textbook about art. If you want to "go behind the scenes" then this is the book for you.

Well researched and enjoyable- but one small detail bothered me: the author has a tendency to call male painters by their last names (Monet, Pissarro, etc), but female painters by their first names (Berthe, Mary, etc). I doubt it was intentionally dismissive, but it was grating.

This fascinating account of the lives of the Impressionists also includes the historical context of the times which deepens our understanding of the trials and difficulties these artists endured. Knowing the "backstory" of many of the paintings enhances our enjoyment and appreciation of the magnificent art created by the Impressionists. This was a "page turner" for me and an important contribution to the understanding of the French Impressionists and their art.

It is to Sue Roe's credit that THE PRIVATE LIVES OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS is not a fun or funny book.Ms. Roe is a serious scholar and she has written a serious work.Writing a definitive biography of even just one person is a huge and somber undertaking...writing an anthology about an entire discrete group is almost too huge to comprehend.Yet because PRIVATE LIVES is not fun in no way negates its worth.Sue Roe has assembled the ultimate work on those artists who coalesced to form the movement now well-loved as "Impressionism."She explains the history of the movement, and how reviled it had been by the establishment. In the process of this explication, she also tells a great deal about the moment in which this movement came to life, at the precise time of the transformation of Paris from a patchwork of farming communities to a cosmopolitan city.She does as good a job of detailing the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune as I have read anywhere.Roe has done enormous research on the personal lives of the most important of the artists, and of their joint struggle to be accepted for the type of imagery they were trying to display.It was startling to read that the great names of Impressionism considered themselves to be cohorts and supporters of one another.I didn't have fun reading THE PRIVATE LIVES OF THE IMPRESSIONISTS, but the time spent was worthwhile. The book was everything that I hoped it would be: A true learning experience.

Recently my life has taken a horrible turn, and someone recommended this book to me because they read it during a similar experience. I won't tell you it will fix your life immediately and change your emotions but if right now you're jus trying to survive each day, this book is a good companion. It has helped me come to terms with and reflect alot of aspects of my situation and self, and I was sad to finish it, I might start it over! I still feel broken, overwhelmed, and sometimes even hopeless but I also feel that I understand what I need better, and the importance of facing and embracing my pain and my growth. My heart goes out to everyone who's been broken open, I hope each day is easier, and you're better for it.

Very impactful. I went to a therapist after mourning the dramatic loss of my mother. The therapist recommended this book and I thought, "Oh geez, not another book!" But this was REALLY what I needed. It is written so well by Elizabeth Lesser and helped me function and to try to be happy. My mother would not want me sad...

Lesser weaves together her own sometimes everyday, sometimes extraordinary, life and relationships with the wisdom of great spiritual teachers. I couldn't truly concentrate on the meaning, as I just scanned the words, recognised them, but didn't adsorb them.Reading a second time, feeling like the first really, it's quite extraordinary. So many great real life stories wrapped in spiritual and mythological legends and lessons. It all makes deep sense, as if we are born knowing these truths, but lose them in the race of life. Prone to dreams and rapture, I am halfway there. It's the integration of being who I am amidst the non-believers, those who claimed they loved me, but didn't even know who I am or how to love. Their loss, but most definitely mine, forever, too. I miss you...H, and A.And Dora, I've got the first two down, easy, it's the "being me" or more the loving me part I'm still working on.

Elizabeth Lesser is not only an inspiring, real, and terrific story-teller- she also has these amazing insights into life's changes- death, divorce, affairs, relationships... She brings an incredibly refreshing look into wherever you are in the difficult time you're having. She also sheds this inspiring light into it and shares with you how you can and you will get through it as she and millions of other people have to.She gave me some inspiring ways to look at the difficult time I'm having in my life and gave me some terrific tools and inspiring and encouraging words that have totally helped me work through this. At a time of change- this is now my new "go to" book, my bible of how to deal with my recent ending of a 12 yr relationship and helped guide me on how the only way out of my grief is through it. If you are struggling through a difficult time- this is THE book that will guide you through the storm.

Someone recommended this book to me. She had gone through a divorce and I have been going through a terrible time with my health.I liked the quotes in the book and reading about the "phoenix effect", but I did think it was a little maybe "new-age-y" for me and very similar to the idea that Eat Pray Love was. I wouldn't read it again, it was a little hard to follow - also going into some difficult to understand language. But, I am glad I did give it a try and read it once.

The thing that I like most about this book is how much it stresses that we sometimes have to go through really tough times in order to become better individuals. It's a book that is very hopeful and when you are going through tough times HOPE is one of the most important things you can have at your disposal.Written wonderfully with plenty of examples from the author's own life along with plenty of others taken from the lives of others the author has had in her life, this book teaches the reader to see the bad times as the good learning processes that can change us all for the positive. Bad experiences can teach us sooo much but when going through the rough times, the key is to find the inner strength to keep going... sometimes a day at a time, sometimes an hour.This is a great guide that I can easily recommend to others to read again and again. While this book is full of wonderful images, the text is repetitive, poorly edited and badly copy edited. It is rife with typos. The lack of editorial photos from big fashion mags surprised me. Copyright issues I suppose. Buy it for the great photos and especially the great sketches by Jed Krascella.

An excellent book on a wonderful subject.

An absolutely terrific book chronicling the life and work of one of America 's most creative designers ! I loved it.

This was a fun read, lots of pictures, excellent format, great price.

I love this book. Great insight, beautiful photographs, beautifully layed out and (yes, I notice this stuff) fantastic paper quality and typography.If you care at all about American fashion and where people like Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Isaac Mirahi got their inspiration from... it's Perry Ellis. One of the first American designers to bring a freshness and breeziness to American style -- his designs had optimism, style, sportiness all in a very distinctive "Perry Ellis" look. Jeffrey Banks (who also knows from whence he speaks) reminds us all why this designer matters, and why he is in the pantheon of American greats. Banks also tracks down the co-workers, models and even the money guys who all helped Perry Ellis create his distinctive look. Slightly OT, the photographs are beautiful -- look for a very young Cindy Crawford in what was probably one of her first runway shows. There is a real innocence and exhuberance in the photos that I loved.Perry Ellis is a true talent missed today. This book tells us why.

This book is absolutely amazing, and fills my dark little heart with joy. If you love the dark books as much as me you will love this one. A prequel to a Dark tale by Dani Rene. And it is defiitly dark and gruesome, so it might not be to everyone taste, but if you like dark book then you will love this book.It set the stage for the story and introduces the characters. Drake has seen and done things no kid should ever seen. That changed him and he believes there is no good in him left. he is just dark and empty. He doesn’t care about everyone apart from his brother and best friend.Caia is taken and thrown in hell, but is strong, She doesn’t give, but will that be enough?Make sure you have something to cuddle while reading. I look forward to the next book

I'm blown away by this story. The dark content, is perfectly dark. It's gruesome and gory details, is good and not for everyone. I love that it's the beginning of a new book to come.Stolen -The Prequel is about Drake and Caia and how they intermingled with each other. They struggle with the choices and situations that are being made to and for them.This book is a gut wrenching read. It will have you gasping for air at all the situations.

I did like the taboo and darkness of the story however it was hard for me to feel and understand the connection between the two main characters and that threw me off.

Wow! I believe this is the darkest book I have ever read, and I have read a lot of them. His is very dark, very sadistic, and intense! Don’t read this book if you have any triggers. I think I may need to read something with hearts and flowers now, lol.*Magic Beyond The Covers Book Blog*

Such a twisted read - I loved every minute of it! It kept me up far too late reading, which is the sign of an excellent book. Highly recommend for lovers of dark romance with suspenseful elements.

Nothing was developed, story or characters and it was very disappointing. I bought the next book to try and gain some background but I can't make it through the first few chapters because I'm worried I'll waste my time like I did on the first story. Disappointing because this had the possibility of going somewhere. Lots of questions and none answered, maybe in the next book but the lack of development in this book made me not want to read the next book.

Stolen was intense and heartbreaking. I am going to have to read the next one to find out what happened at the end there but otherwise the story was well written.

A bit testy and sometimes more argumentative than instructive in laying out the field. He has a real antagonism toward the left who write in the field and goes on about it too much. He also says he is less judgmental in this edition about the books, but he certainly isn't. You know without a doubt what he considers mediocre or bad, and good. So it is not an even-handed book, but it does cover the field well enough to merit reading.

Well written book

Posner is not a dumb man, but early in this book he notes that the law and literature movement is so popular because it is a cheap way to hide shoddy scholarship. He certainly proves his point here. My hopes in this book were dashed early on by his "critical introduction," where he relates that "[l]aw and literature is a field with a wide remit" by using Howards End to show the ubiquity of legal issues in even a non-legal literary text. The examples he uses, though, are so superficially related to law (e.g., taking arguments among the protagonists as examples of poor legal reasoning or the contrast between justice and mercy) that I don't know why he bothered. He sometimes indulges in annoying tangents and bizarre readings of literary texts to promote his own agenda. His command of ancient Greek sources, the Bible, and Shakespeare is especially laughable, full of elementary mistakes and poorly worded generalities. Anyone who takes away from Antigone the message that "intense religious feeling can undermine social peace" or from Lear that the king's "failure to grasp the force of self-interest is his undoing" is seriously violating his own earlier recommendation to not make texts into what you want them to say. I tried to give this book a chance but after about the first third just couldn't take it anymore.

What's scary about this volume is the fact that the author sits as a judge near the pinnacle of our legal system. He reads literature as little more than a collection of affirmations of his own opinions, and then develops arguments, which give a superficial appearance of logic, to support his opinionated readings. Except for some cherry picking to support his readings, he generally ignores the vast body of scholarship on these works. He distorts basic facts about many of the works he chooses to write about, raising troubling questions about what he must do when he sits on the bench and decides the fate of actual people.

A wonderfully original and instructive study of what literature has to teach about the law, the methods of legal argument, and the interpretation of statutes and the Constitution.
